Let's face it fellow English boardies... we're a hated and mistrusted country and the cheers for Germany's goals would have been no louder in Berlin than in Glasgow.

 

My second wife was an Aussie. She told me when I was cheering on the Irish in some crucial game... 'They hate you!'

I was talking to a Scottish bar owner in Jomtien about 4weeks ago..........He was talking about Maradona's visit with The Argentina team to Glasgow to play Scotland. Terry Butcher was something to do with the Scottish team at the time and had said to the press he would, 'Never forgive Maradona for the hand of God incident.'

 

Maradona had answered according to my Scottish friend.... 'Who iz zis Terri Boocher?'

 

My Scottish friend said 'Of course that comment and the hand ball has made Maradona a hero in Scotland. We luv im.'

 

I laughed along a little uncertainly and then asked, 'What about Henri and his hand ball against the Irish?'

 

'Ach that was wrong!'

 

I stopped laughing and have taken it possibly a little too much to heart.........but admit I don't feel the same about drinking with him anymore......Though I can't help myself but still cheer on any home country unless they are playing against us.

 

So if I'm right (correct me if I'm wrong) and just out of interest..........Will the anti English watchers just lose interest now we are out or is there someone you hate as much?.....Or will you now just have favourites to cheer 'on'.......instead of 'off?'

When my family first went to Scotland to stay at our friends house in East Kilbride, Glasgow. They were worried about how their Brother In Law Tam, was going to react. He hated the English with a vengence. We had no idea how he felt about us.

 

It was at our friends 40th birthday Barbie' in June, while I was sheltering from the rain with Tam in the garage, that he told me how the entire family was worried about us meeting him. After spending a weekend with us- playing footie with my nipper in the garden, me singing 'my song' at the family gathering, he mellowed.

 

Fing is, as individuals we usually get along.

 

 

Being English, is like having a terminal illness. You can worry about it, or just carry on as normal. I tend to do the latter.

History is on your side. In the 15 World Cups since 1950, Spain has never won anything. The never even made a semi-final. Brazil made 8 semi-finals, won 5 world cups, were runner-up twice and finished in third place once.

 

Germany reached 10 semi-finals, won the cup 3 times, were runner-up 4 times and finished in third place twice with one fourth placing.

 

England, with a bit of luck, won the cup in 1966 and were runner-up in 1990.
