Yes I have it on good authority that Meakong has in fact shut down, Mekong, on the other hand, is still going strong.

Bangyikhan Distillery and Mekhong whisky production have not shut down. When shelves go empty in Thailand, it usually means a fight between the distributor and the market.

I'm a cheap charlie who likes a drink of thai whiskey in the loom. Mekong has not been available in Big C for the 5 weeks I have been here, but when I first asked about it Big C just said "No more...can try 7-11' Haven't tried to buy at 7-11 as Samson (98 baht 700ml, fuck the spelling :-) works ok....but happily getting Mekong at bar beers.

The "Meakong" factory has differently shut down most places have run out. We have been buying bottles from out of the way places and stocking our favorite bars.

Yes this is true. I read about this on Live a few days ago. Sunny Valentine confirmed on that thread that supplies in Pattaya have been dry for a few months... You may be able to find a few bottles in the 7-11 shelves... I loved my Mekong Coke... It is definitely the best cane rum(though it is called whiskey, it is technically rum) I'ave ever had...

The Mekhong factory is open and producing as usual at Bangyikhan. It hasn't stopped or slowed.

 

Shortages of beer and whisky in Thailand are fairly frequent but always artificial. They are the work of agents and companies, who are ... well, blackmailing shops, bars and similar businesses. If a shop won't buy Soandso Beer, then the supplier won't provide Suchandsuch whisky, for example. I have no clue what's going on in Patttaya, but the Mekhong factory is not closed, and producing as usual -- as Bangyikhan residents can tell when they sniff the morning air.

I like Mekong too, but the best rum for a rum and coke you will ever find is aussie Bundaberg rum...

International Beverage Holdings is the foreign name of ThaiBev, the Thai distillery and beer company. In Scotland, ThaiBev makes mostly single malts. It has a tonne of websites, but Mekhong.com is for people who like English. They are currently buying up China.

 

Some interesting recent background here. This is a GIANT company.

And, you are right. The ThaiBev information about Mekhong does link to that site run out of Scotland.

Their July 2010 newletter does not refer to Mekhong being closed, but they do mention new Chang Drinking Water.

If you live in Thailand then hold a Thai bottle of Meakong in front of a Thai person and ask them to spell it. Tried it 5 times in the last 3 weeks while there and the people of Thailand will tell you that the Factory is closed.

 

Went to Bang Chang at the begin of our holiday Maekong in every bar went back 10 days later gone. If you like it and find a bottle buy it.

Wouldn't Thai people normally spell the word in Thai??? In any case, it really doesn't matter. The Thai people who own and run Thai Beverage spell it one way, and one way only. I'll give them credit for knowing how to spell the name of the product they own and sell.

ThaiBev has now announced it is "repositioning" Mekhong in the market, which apparently is a fancy word for putting on a new label, tripling the price and selling it as something very hi-so. They have done this with a couple of other brands in the past. It seems to mean that the Mekhong brand will disappear, kind of like another old whisky brand eventually became Sang Som. So yep, addicts and souvenir hunters should buy what they find these days.

Come on bodgob. The only spelling "variations" are by people who can't spell, or don't want to, or can't find out how to. This drink by this distillery is, always has been, and always will be correctly spelt "Mekhong" in English. The word, the river and more, argue away - but the name of this drink is trademarked and in the English alphabet there's only one spelling.

 

boobdog would actually be good. But it wouldn't be you either.
