Learning to Speak Thai

Hello there - am a new member, so forgive me if something similar has been posted in the past.

 

I want to learn to speak Thai - can anybody recommend a good CD or internet site ? A CD would be good as I could just sit with my earphones in a try and learn !

 

Anyway, open to suggestion or ideas from those that have learnt to speak Thai.

Pimsular Thai CD's are popular and can be downloaded from torrent sites. They do however teach you the very correct way to speak Thai which not many Thai's do except well educated Thai's. They will give you a head start.

I am not certain that Pimsleur is the best choice to speak Thai in Pattaya.

It's a very good way to make ladies laugh during hours ! "Nobody speak like that" they say...

I have the Rosetta Stone program and it's very good, albeit definitely on the pricey side compared to some others. I paid about US$250 for it, but I just checked their web site and it's now on sale for $179. Its best feature is the voice-print analyzer. You hear a word or phrase spoken by a native speaker and see a graphical display. Then you say the same thing into your microphone and the program shows you a graph of how you pronounced it compared with the native speaker. You can repeat as many times as you need until your pronounciation closely matches the native speaker.

 

The TAT also also released a free iPhone app called "Speak Thai" that's pretty good for what it does. It gives you the written and spoken versions of key phrases in various settings: shopping, dining, travel, etc.

I returned mine, really disappointed with it. The best advice I was given is to move to BKK, go to a specific school there within walking distance to really learn it the proper way. I believe it takes practice speaking with others living there. Other than that, for just having fun and learning basic stuff in Pattaya, I just wrote it down on a notepad as to how it sounded to me in English. Of course as with any language pronunciation is very important and in Thai the tones are most essential. As with anything else, if you really want to learn to speak the language you have to be determined. I think alot of guys living there where English is widely spoken, there is no real desire to want to learn. Practicing with a Thai girl is fun if you find the right one.
