I have a Thai mate who comes from the South of the country, male and about 46. I have known him since I first came to Thailand about 8 years ago through a business contact. I have travelled around to various towns and cities around Thailand with him on occasion and we have both taken advantage of P4P outside of Patts and Thais pay along the same lines as farrangs. OK the same rules apply i.e. If you nice handsum man may be they might ask for slightly less but the bar fine if it exists in the establishment still has to be paid! (especially if a singer from a club or the like).

 

They pay same as us, some pay more and some less than others! even as far as Thai GIRLS bar fining the Boys from Karaoke for LT or ST etc. !

While I was working for a Thai company, I would go out with the engineers on pay nights. They would never consider going to the farang ghettos for girls. We went to Thai night clubs. They alway made fun of me for picking ugly girls. The Thai guys always picked white skinned tall girls no matter whether they were ugly or not. Amazingly most of the girls in these places could speak decent English. I was told that the girls were nearly all university educated. This was quite some time back and the beer was 150 baht a bottle. The bar fines were never less than 1,500 baht. I never paid a bar fine like that nor did I ever take one of the girls. I was told that I should give the girl a minimum of 2,000 baht. In contrast the farang ghettos charged 300 baht bar fine and the girls were happy with 500 baht long time. No sir, this is really misleading or wrong as others say.

 

First, though, most Thai establishments don't have the same fine-and-go system as farang-oriented bars. But if Thais go to such places, they pay what everyone pays.

 

Thais pay WAY more "just to get a shag" than farang in Pattaya. There are numerous reports right on this forum of clubs in Pattaya but particularly Bangkok that prove that. The bars and clubs in Bangkok that are the (very) rough equivalent of Pattaya/Bangkok farang bars USUALLY have much higher prices on both in-club and extra outside activities than Pattaya bars. As Gary says, that's because the girls are better in almost all ways. They know their value and charge accordingly, to be very crass about it.

 

There are places in Thailand below Pattaya, but Pattaya is near the bottom. Most Thais wonder why farang put up with the quality of girls in Pattaya. And pay accordingly.

I spend 8,500 a month on Rent/Water/Electric

 

Tilac does the laundry and 90% of the cooking, that comes to about 1,500 a week max.

We go out approx twice a week spending approx 800 each time, she doesn't drink and she has 1 or 2 drinks a night, maybe ovaltine or orange juice.

I haven't been to Walking St since 31st January, then mostly to see the fireworks.

Previous to this stay I was a 2/3/4 week tourist 2/3 times a year for last 8 years. I spent most of my time on Walking Street and was a fairly high spender at 10,000 + a night, every night. But it was a holiday, I knew I was overspending, but I didn't mind.

 

Most money is spent on Alcohol/BF/Tips in the usual Pattaya experience. If you can cut this down to a minimum, then pattaya is a very cheap place to live. Never buy lady drinks for girls in the bars. I use to when I was in holiday mode, but not anymore.

 

The transition was fairly easy for me as I was becoming Jaded with the Walking St and drinking scene and wanted to try it differently on a long term stay.

i'd thought that where 'average Thais' 'were' actually paying for sex...... that in this case, in Thai only/karaoke bars the short time prices etc were less than we would find apply in walking st for example.. i'd realised i'd based this assumption on no more than what i believed to be the 'average Thais' average monthly income. and given that, that it would be impossible on this amount to budget for 3 or 4 long/short times per week.

 

i'd thought until now that, for example in the bkk soapies, falangs paid a surcharge that is not applicable to Thais or indeed other Asians.

 

i am aware that there are Thais with incomes that dwarf mine and can afford to frequent very exclusive thai only pfp venues beyond my pocket.

However, for a peek at an average Thai and what he would pay, my (ex) gf was negotiating a LT for her brother, a construction worker making less than 300b/day, at a shitty karaoke in a small town in Ubon. The girl was young, Laotian, and probably right up his alley. They wanted 300b bar fine, 350b for the room, and 1500b for long time. That equated to about a week's salary for him. I could have done at least as well getting him laid in Pattaya.

 

There are 300b ST brothels around. I think VicVegas might know of one in Rayong or Sattahip...but it's really short time, measured in minutes, occurs on site in a dump of a room, and does the trick at getting the guy off.

 

Moving up the scale in time, looks, comforts, atmosphere, will cost them too...not far off from what we would pay, if we could afford it.

That should read "in some BKK soapies, some farangs pay a surchage". However, if you're spending enough dosh and they want your repeat custom, the 'surcharge' tends to disappear. The charge exists simply because they see the "average farang" as only wanting to spend his 1.8-2.5k on one bird and then fuck-off. On the other hand, the average Asian is just as likely to spend several hours eating and drinking (and racking up a substantial bin in the process). Don't think of it as a farang surcharge, but more a minimum spend that's applied at the discretion of the mamasan/papasan.

Back on topic, I lived in Bangkok and Jomtien for a number of years. In fact I still have a condo in Jomtien. In those years I NEVER spent more than 2,000 US per month. When I retired to Jomtien I really didn't know what it would cost me so I kept a spread sheet that included every baht I spent. That was before I bought the condo and was paying rent. I did everything I wanted and never had a budget. As expected discretionary spending was the most expensive item. I averaged 40,000 baht a month. The answer is that unless you really go wild and stupid, 30,000 US per year is plenty to live on.

 

I now live upcountry and just increased my wife's housekeeping budget from 25,000 to 30,000 baht per month. She pays for everything including my clothes and cigarettes. What she has left over goes into her bank account. I do pay the big ticket items, insurance policies, my occasional road trips and my bar bills. Even including insurance, trips and bar bills, that is less than half the $30,000 US.
