coming to patts in july and was wondering how much you can withdraw in one go at an atm machine.i`ve used my nationwide card in the past but they have started to charge a one pound withdrawel fee and a one pound commission fee so withdrawing larger amounts would obviously be better.

whilst im at it are there any ATM`s that dont charge the 150 baht fee,i read once that there were a few but cant remember where.

i can always fall back on the good old travellers cheques bit i like the debit card for convienience.

The Thai bank account route is, IMHO, the way to go. However, I take cash, not TCs.

 

There ARE restrictions imposed by Thai banks. I have yet to come across a Thai ATM that will allow me to withdraw in excess of a maximum - usually 15,000 or 20,000 Baht. That is a long way below what my UK debit card allows me to withdraw.

Bangkok Bank allow 25,000 per withdrawal at an ATM for their customers.

 

I have a limit of 50,000 per day on my account, but could increase this if I wanted to do so.

 

Nationwide (UK) have a £300 per day limit on ATM withdrawals which means 14,700 or so right now, plus the charge from the Thai bank and Nationwide fees.

 

I just send my own money by SWIFT from Nationwide to Bangkok Bank these days, which costs me £25 but at least I can do it in comfort from my sofa using online banking with my ATM card and the card reader.

Aeon ATMs one of which is at Tesco on North Pattaya road has no THB150 fee. It's a bit of a grind to get to for saving five bucks so it depends on what your time is worth.

 

All ATMs have a physical limit that is not necessarily related to your withdrawal limit set by your bank and that's usually 20 banknotes. So IF the ATM has 1000's then you should be able to get THB20,000 around $650.

 

If your withdrawal limit at your bank is more than that, then do two withdrawals at the same ATM.

 

One thing is I found that the Aeon exchange rate seems marginally poorer than Kasikorn so for $1300 in two withdrawals e.g. THB40,000 you might pay more despite the fee than at Kasikorn.

 

Some of these calculations start to get pretty petty and when I was there I found that fast and convenient was better than five bucks now and then.

I brink about 3 to 4K usd (more now that the dollar has lost 1/6th it's value since my last trip early last year) in traveller's cheques and use my atm card as a backup.

 

Then I never need to worry about it.

Some SCB machines allow 25 banknotes per transaction (25000 Baht) and you can set your ATM daily limit to 200,000 Baht.

 

As long as you have a balance in the account there are no fees and they keep them open unless the account is inactive for an extended period (seems to be more than 2 years but not 100%). Transferring money into it, whatever the amount, or using the card, many of them are Visa Debit cards useable anywhere in the world, will keep the account alive indefinately.

 

At a branch yuu can withdraw up to the available funds in your account (Ive done over 2 million on one occasion) but they will require your passport for a transaction over your ATM limit. I found out the hard way that they are completely inflexible on the ID requirement and would not even accept my Thai drivers license, or a photocopy of the passport. Inconvenient but nice to know that there is a level of security there.

 

They did start to introduce interbank ATM fees here a while back but I believe that it's either in limbo or on its way out. Someone else may know the REAL details on this as there are many conflicting reports in the media (not at all unusual here LOL)

Not sure about Kasikorn but many of the banks operate on the same systems.

 

When I worked on this sort of thing in Australia there were only 3 major provider of card services in the whole country. Each user interface (ATM or card swipe unit) was branded by the bank but ultimately they all went back to one of the 3 and the greater majority (over 65%) went to the main player. As the limit system is part of what I'm talking about here I would be shocked if you couldn't change the limits at Kasikorn similar to SCB.

 

As far as I know at the moment there are only 3 (ultimate providers) that I have found in Thailand so this would further re-inforce my suspicions.

 

BREAKING NEWS ---- OK just got an update from the GF (who is with Kasikorn): the answer is YES, just contact the bank.

 

I'll leave the other stuff there as it relates to non-Kasikorn questions and may help someone else

PS As a clarification, the banks normally (in most countries) dont own the ATM/card processing networks. Some (in fact many) in Thailand have their own but economies of scale tend to make the systems gravitate towards a few independant service providers. Things are heading that way in Thailand as I type this.

I never use that one, is it 'reliable'?

I normally go to the one in front of Homeworks, South Pattaya/Sukhumvit BigC. There is one in the corridor to the toilet at Carrefour, but I have only spotted it on-line once.

 

Yes a local bank ATM is a good option, I have also had 25k from a Bangkok Bank ATM. A £300 limit, only 15,000 baht, is a bit limiting.

The amount is different with different ATM's. Also what your card limit is. Most will give only 20 bills. That is 20,000 baht, however, on many holiday weekends, they run out of 1,000 baht notes, and give you 500 baht notes, so you can only get out 20, 500 baht notes or 10,000 baht. When the US dollar dropped, I had friends that couldn't get 20,000 out because it went over their card limit. When I need extra, I've gone to a different ATM and got more. However MM informed me, that you can put your card right back into the ATM and get another 20,000 baht. I had never thought of trying the same ATM a second time.

All Bangkok Bank ATMs will give you a maximum of 25,000 in one go.

 

There is no limit to the number of actual notes, I have taken out 24,900 (29 notes)

 

You can do as many back-to-back transactions as you want, up to your daily limit.

I have given up using ATMs, too expensive, only use as a last resort.

 

If you are a Nationwide customer, call 0845 3010417, Travelex, order Travellers Cheques for no commission and just £3.50 delivery. Maximum order amount £2500. Get £100 denominations as you pay @32bht to change each cheque.

I my opinion, this is the most efficient way to change £ into Bht.

 

Taking £ cash you will get a slightly better rate, but you run the risk of it being stolen.

Have you ACTUALLY tried it or just read their statement ?

 

Yes its a Travelex tel number, but you only get charged for delivery. Have used this number in August 2010 and on the 28th May 2011 - both times ZERO charges, just £3.50 for delivery. Can only order max of £2,500 and they limit you to one order every 60 days.

Don't believe me, your loss.

I transfer by SWIFT now as £2500 every 60 days would be no use to me, thanks anyway.

 

However the thieving bastards at Bangkok Bank are now charging 15 Baht (up from 10 Baht in Feb 2011) per ATM withdrawal in Pattaya as my account is in the man Bangkok branch.
