Was always wondering " Who decides name of Bar Girl?"

Recommended Posts

Was always curious as to who and how bar girls received their " english" names. Does the bar owner decide? Does the mamasan decide? Does the bar girl pick a name or gets to pick from a variety of names? And is there any special reason that they seem to change their " english" names? I have noticed some FLB girls that have left and then came back to work with different names. Is there any significance to this? hmmmmm.

Usually the lady picks the name...it may be her nickname or some other name she chooses to go by. The spelling is usually hers, of if not, from the mamasan.

At FLB, sometimes a girl changes her name for her own reasons, or in some cases, because there is already someone in the bar with the same name.

I've noticed some are abbreviations of extremely long and unpronounceable names. Some mongers do the same if the girls have trouble with their name. My name is actually Ebenezer Tarquin Scrooge, but they couldn't pronounce it.

I always have trouble calling some of them, Poo.

Poo means crab. It's the prime minister's nickname. Big Brother Thaksin's nickname is Maew or Cat/Kitty. The nickname of the ex-prime minister born in England was Mark - repeat, that was his nickname, not his legal Thai name.

When Thai kids are born, they are given nicknames, even before they are given names. The nicknames do two things. First, they sort of describe what the kid looks like: red, little, big, has western looks, short, fat, froggy ..... Second, these are mildly (repeat mildly) derogatory, because you don't want the spirits to come and take away your kid because (s)he is so attractive that you've even given a wonderful nickname like Gorgeous or Wealthy.

Sometimes, parents give a kid a nickname for their own reason. Example: Mark because the kid was living in England. Example: They don't believe there's a ghost who kidnaps, so they call the kid Winner or Beauty. Sometimes, instead of a nickname in Thai, they give one in English, "Winner" again being a decent example of this, and Mark.

Kids carry these nicknames for life - by family, friends and so on. Sometimes, just like westerners change their names or use different names for whatever reason, so do Thais. They want fresh luck, a new start. They assume a name for bar work, keep the old one for friends. These are examples, but it's for the same reasons, and no different from, the west.

Thanks Joe.

I noticed though that birds I knew called Ratta , Thun and Tik etc, had long names beginning with those letters. Or are they words in Thai? I just looked up Ratta's profile to get the long name and she seems to have changed her name altogether! :clueless
