Friend from Norway Needs Help

Recommended Posts

I have a friend from Norway who's health is poor so he's trying to go back to Norway for medical help BUT, he's having problems which I've outlined below.

My Norway Friend has very low lung capacity so he has to use oxygen when exerting himself. He's in his early 60s and can walk, but just a short distance. While sitting he rarely need his oxygey. He'll need an airline that will suppliment his portable oxygen bottle.

He's been denied by Thai Air. Thai Air says he must have a doctor to fly with him which he can't afford.

The Norway Embasse has been no help.

Any Advice would be greatly appreciated.

A starting point is likely to be a doctors letter that he is fit enough to travel.

I believe he will not be permitted to take his own oxygen.

Here BA go into some details regarding their flights....

It is a pity Thai have been unhelpful as I think they are the only airline going direct.

Further. Someone the TGF knows who is quite ill just went back to Europe, Thai Airways, First Class

Here is a link to a website that sells portable oxygen concentrators and a list of airlines that permit the use inflight.

I doubt the airlines can provide the oxygen for long trips since they only carry enough in tanks for emergency descent to 10,000 ft.

Most airplanes are pressurised to 8000 ft.

Sorry to hear that, good luck to you and him. Has he been sick for a long time?

Shamus,

as embassies tend to be constrained by a tight set of rules I can understand their inability in some cases to assist on a technical point but unfortunately most of these places are manned by people who dont really give a toss about anyone (not restricted to Norway I'm certain).

Have you tried contacting one of the many Norwegian communitiy/resorts around Pattaya to see if they can offer assistance or evenjust help by putting some notices in their villages to request help. I thnk you're far more likely to get quality assistance from one of his countrymen than a group of 'disparate tail chasers'.

If you don't know of any of these places PM me and I'll give you some contacts. We have a number of groups and villages that use our business regularly. There may even be a Norwegian doctor lving amongst them. There are also a number of biker groups that may be willing to assist.

Cheers :gulp: Admiral Ken

PS I've got to ask :

Gourmet catering AND septic tank cleaning WTF :clueless

Sweden and Norway have similar welfare systems. Here's what a Swedish acquaintance did when he ran into an equivalent situation while living in Thailand, although the Swede's problems didn't involve a need for oxygen. Airlines wouldn't accept him as passenger unless he was acompanied by doctor and the Swedish embassy said it couldn't help. The Swede contacted the local welfare authorities in his home town and those authorities found a way that a doctor could be sent (at the state's expense) to accompany the sick man back to Sweden. The man's plight had also been covered by the Swedish media which helped in getting a favorable ruling.

Evil.
