I think it depends on the sport, the medal, and the national environment.

In the USA, I can't think there'd be great acclaim for a gold medal winner in badminton or 10m airgun.

I'm guessing little Gabby Douglas will find doors opening for her. America loves its female gymnasts. Mary Lou Retton built a career out of endorsements, much to the ire of the left

Your making it sound bigger than what it is. It's the semifinals and the looser of the next round may end up in 4th not playing for the gold at all.
