I usually stay at the Chiang Mai Orchid which is around 1500 baht per night depending on the time of year.

Hotel is pretty good but expensive beer and food, not that I eat or drink there as its right next to a shopping mall about 3 times the size of Mikes in Pattaya.

About 10- 15 mins tuk tuk to the beer bars which are near the Night Bazaar and Loikroa Rd

try the pornping hotel. rite next to night bazzar/food court. they have very good breakfast  and taxi service from airport for 30 baht. good rooms in front and better in the new tower. high season rates i belive are around 900 baht front and 1200 tower. good pool clean.  the only draw back i found was no english speaking channels on the televsion. i was not in room enough to worry about it .

I have previously posted various info on Krabi including hotels (although not reviews I admit). I presume that you can search through posts.

Anyway, as in generous mood:

I think Ao Nang is better than Krabi town. Don't stay too far west (i.e in the direction of Krabi Resort or Ao Nang Pakasi) as its a hike and badly lit at night. The main area is on the beach front and up the hill to as the road heads eastward away from the beach. Best value and quality seafood is on the front at the first restaurant in the collective at the west end of the beach. From the beach, you can also get longtails out to Railay and others etc. Good sea canoing is available from shops on the front and a day in the mangroves is well worth it, if tiring.

Hotels. A good place (name escapes me) is on the front, behind the only wood fired pizza restaurant (yellow/red colour). good rooms in a house behind at around Bt1100 per day with 10+% off for 3 or more days.

Try the following:

Things change quickly but stay on or near the main drag for ease and comfort.

I would agree that the Pornping is a pretty good bet in Chiang Mai. The price is right the rooms are clean if not a bit out dated. But the nice part is you are near the river and the night bazzar. I enjoy Krabi. It is a very nice change of scene. I always stay in Krabi town. Au nong is just an over developed tourist trap. The beach is not that great and the whole scene there is tolerable for about 2 hours. Krabi town is much more fun to me. I rent a scooter and I can explore the area. There is lots to check out there. Within a 50 km. radius, there are many great beachs and mountains, water falls, hot springs, ect. Also there is some really great food to be had as well. Down by the river each night there is a series of stalls, more like potable restaurants. These serve up a great range of great food for incredibly cheap prices. On the outskirts of town there is a restaurant that has to be one of the best I have eaten in. It is called the chow suah (sp) this place is amazing it is open very late and serves the most amazing aray of dishs you could imagine. True gourmet food at burger king prices. If you want to go to the raily or the other beachs there are longtail boats that will take you there for about 70 baht. All and all the best bet is to look around the net for Krabi lodging. There is not much night life there but there are a few bars to relax and enjoy. ------ D

I went to Chiang Mai, make sure you tour the temples on top of the mountain, the emerald buddah, and many other sights, skip the hmong village as it is a tourist trap.

If you want an excellent "no boom boom" massage, go to Somsri, 47/3 moon muang road  ask for Soontri 1st choice  or La 2nd choice  I got the muay thai massage from Soontri and was whipped into some serious relaxation.  There a few beer bars across the moat from the Montri hotel, it is nothing like good ol' Pattaya ;)  M_H

I just came back from Thailand and stayed in Chiang Mai at the Lotus for 1200Baht/night including breakfast.  I wanted to stay at the Imperial Mai Ping but it was fully booked.  The Lotus is right behind the Orchid and is directly connected to the Central shopping mall that has a cinema, bowling alley and ice skating ring.  The rooms were very big, decent buffet breakfast, and guest friendly.  They are in the process of refurbishing their rooms.
