My computer has of recent started to play up. Its a dual core AMD Athlon™ 64 3800 2.0ghz 3 gig of ram 64 bit operating system operating on Windows 7 Ultimate registered. There is a Nvidia GeForce 7900 GT/GTO card installed.

When I am on the internet and well on say the likes of Huffington post when I have to scroll down with the wheel on the mouse the text etc gets all distorted as if its being dragged and sliding down the paper. If I click a few times and highlight a word it normally reverts back to normal. I have got Norton 360 installed and registered and I have scanned but can get nothing. Any clues please?

The first thing I would tell you do to is make sure there's no obstructions on front of the either input or output of the cooling fans.

It does sound as if the video card is going. If you have another slot it fits in, I would try that, or try the integrated graphics port, assuming the motherboard has one.

It could also be the motherboard's bus connection to the graphics card, which is why I suggest changing slots, if possible. Yes, I know these days most are fixed with a dedicated graphics port slot, so this may not be applicable.

Wow, that is an old system.... Is it a socket 939 or AM2?

Have you tried updating to the latest NVidia drivers?

Another thing I would suspect is Norton 360 is hogging the CPU... I would recommend dumping that and using a free one like AVG or Microsoft Security Essentials instead.

Perhaps disabling the Norton 360 temporarily to see how things behave is an idea.

I know I have problems with some web pages...... it hogs all my resources and I can't do anything for 20-30 seconds, all I see is the HD access hard on.

Someone told me that was likely my McAffee.

Pages like Pattaya One are typical.

I would try a clean reinstall of the software.

He could try that, but doing that "might" get rid of the problem but it doesn't help finding out what the problem really was. And then what we happen if the problem returns, Darkmancomes would end up re-installing his software again and again!!!

The symptoms are those of a "process" hogging CPU or GPU resources. Using "Task manager" should give him an idea of what is hogging resources.

My systems run BOINC projects on CPU and GPU so are running at 100% load constantly, and sometimes it does affect browser performance. If that happens I just suspend the GPU tasks whilst I watch the youtube video or whatever I am doing at the time. I run dual GTX670's and Dual GTX660Ti's.

Surely somebody who runs Folding@home would know stuff like that.

That's what I'd do too. Sounds like a driver problem.

Norton sucks, it hogs resources. I use AVG Free in combination with Malwarebytes and I never have problems.

How's your electricity bill? I was going to try mining Bitcoins but I'm too busy with other stuff.

Not too bad....... and I don't need to use the central heating as much!!!!

I crunch for medical projects doing research into Cancer and HIV/AID medicines, a worthy cause..

I like to try the cheapest solution first before I start replacing expensive computer parts. I find a clean reinstall can work wonders.

Lots of advice there lads and thanks one point I did pick up on is processor hogging. I have a little knowledge of computers so I depend on yourselves and you tube. Anyway I have seen Norton flash up a dialogue box with high processor usage something like 100% of one processor and when I ask it what it is it points towards internet explorer?

Make sure you have enough space allocated on your hard disk for virtual memory.

Windows might be doing a background process to move virtual memory to another area of your hard disk. This can take a looooong time.

Google 'virtual memory' and I'm sure there'll be a tutorial on you tube.

Another thing you might want to do is increase your RAM to a minimum of 4 Gb. Windows 7 will use all your 3 Gb. You should notice a difference with just the 1 extra Gb.

Are you sure you're running 64 bit version of Windows 7? 32 bit version only sees 3Gb even if 4 is installed.

3Gb of RAM is an unusual amount.

And where have I recommended replacing expensive computer parts?

As for replacing computer parts, with an old system like the OP has he could probably sell them on Ebay for a decent price as they are in working condition and upgrade to a newer, more up to date motherboard/CPU combo with integrated graphics on the proceeds. I recently sold an old Socket 939 motherboard with a Dual Core Athlon 4800 and 2GB ram for over £100.

That is why, in my first reply, I asked if his system is a socket 939 - because there is still some demand for those, more than AMD Socket AM2 and Socket 745.stuff..

I thought we were replacing them because there was a problem!

LocalYokul was the one who thinks it is a hardware problem. I was suggesting checking to see if there is processes running that is causing problems with his browser and the graphics output from it.

If it was a graphics card problem it would affect more than just his browser performance.

The bit i wrote about selling them on Ebay was what could be a very low cost upgrade for his old system,

Anyone who uses Norton antivirus and thinks it's a memory hog hasn't tried Norton in several years. I DO agree that in the past it used a lot of resources. A couple of years ago they totally rebuilt their system and it is a very good program now. Do I use Norton now? No, I got a free year from them for testing and I was quite impressed. I use the free MS Security Essentials and have no problems.

I'm not that familiar with desk top computers but I know that my machine has two ports for different video cables. I got both cables when I bought a new Samsung monitor. Quite frankly I can't see any difference in performance regardless of which port I use. My motherboard is a Gigabyte. If the computer has two video ports, you can easily determine if it is a video card problem.

No Paps I have 2 hd and both nowhere near full one a 300gb th other a 1TB can I ask for your guidance please? Thanks

I'm 90% sure it's a virtual memory issue. It's easy to fix as long as your hard drive isn't full.
