Should I bring my birth certificate?

Recommended Posts

I'm considering going to Thailand for a long term stay; should I order a copy of my birth certificate? I'm a US citizen and will bring my passport, driver's licence, and social security card and am not sure if bringing the birth certificate is needed for anything, or a good idea to have.

I have never needed mine.

Can't think of why you would need it. Dealing with the embassy, they are going to want to see your passport.

The only thing guaranteed to be recognized by the Thais is your passport. I did however once use my passcard to rent a scooter.

In the event you lose your passport you will need an alternate form of identification that the US embassy trusts. Birth certificate would probably be the least of them since they come in 10,000 different flavors. Driver's licenses come in 50 different flavors.

The US National ID card unofficially known as the passcard is your best alternative identification to the US Embassy.

Is that the one you can get from the passport office which does have a photo and can be used for crossing U.S. land borders?
