Delta quote:

Minneapolis MSP) to BKk Roundtrip $1600.00

MSP to BKK via Seattle (SEA) $1605.00

Separate Booking:

MSP to SEA Roundtrip $324.00

SEA to BKK Roundtrip $1016.00

Total $1350.00

Savings $250.00

MSP to Seattle One Way

$209.00

SEA to BKK with return

flight that goes from Bkk

to MSP and then to SEA

$1061.00

Total $1270

Saving $330.00

I called Delta booking and tried to have them book me on the third itinerary. I told him I would take the return flight all the way to MSP and not continue on to Seattle. He said he was not allowed to make that booking. It would violate my flight contract. I said I would just book it on my own and he basically said it was a good plan. When I get to MSP on the return I will just go and cancel the last leg of the trip. Saving $330.00 is no small change. You would think Delta would work with me on this as they would then have an extra seat open on the final leg of the flight from MSP to SEA.

For $330.00, I'd have no problem checking my bags.

You have to do that when you clear customs on way back anyway.

The difference being that you would be able to recheck your bags about 30 feet after you exit the customs area at the SEATAC airport rather than dragging them half way across the airport.

You may still be able to check you bags through to MSP when you check in at Suvarnabhumi. You would need a printout of your domestic itinerary. Bigdelta probably would have known but he departed controlled flight a couple of years ago. Of course, ground truth may be different even if it should be possible in theory.

Flying Delta all of the way so they will check the bags at departure from MSP to BKK. On return they will be checked all the way but you have to pick up all bags at MSP to go through Customs and Immigration. After processing I just would not recheck bags and cancel the last leg of the trip.

Would that cause any aggravation for those passengers flying from MSP to Seattle due to a no-show?

What you are demonstrating is the way flights are priced based on demand rather than distance.

At least you are going to cancel the last leg, a passenger with just hand baggage could just walk straight out and get his taxi.

According to the very small print buried deep within your contract with the airline. This not permitted and the airline can take you to small claims court. They would win. The amount of money recovered is small so they don't bother.

I do not think it will cause any problems with other passengers as I will go to the counter and cancel the last leg. Maybe it will open up a seat for a standby passenger. I would hope they would not be so petty as to sue me in court. Publicity not good.
