Mandatory registration of SIM cards in Thailand

Recommended Posts

So Gary is a 'Nobody'???

Why that? You do know what I meant... "nobody else", or "nobody except you".

Do you know such people with problems because of non-registration ?

Maybe I just posted that information to increase my post count............. No, that doesn't make any sense. My post count is already quite high. I guess that I am just lucky. Perhaps a farang friend of mine up here and myself are the only ones in Thailand to have this problem. Or are you suggesting that I am a liar?

So can someone answer this:

If someone arrives for a 3 week stay, gets a PAYG SIM from 7-11 or any other store and intends to use it just for the 3 weeks then ditch it, does it need to be registered?. If so, how do they go about it?.

There are 'tourist SIMs' (traveller SIM) available now with a limited lifespan. I guess the numbers get reused so it could lead to some interesting calls.... maybe useful calls!

When the registration is enforced by cutting off service for non-registered SIMs, those would likely need to be registered too.

Butch, you might need your passport info, and possibly some address.

They were being sold openly at the entrance to Walking St, perhaps a passport was required, I did not ask.

Surprising if they are requiring details since they are being sold at the 7-11 and Family Mart too.

TIT..as long as they work now without registration, why bother, eh?

Hi. I registered a Happy (Dtac) SIM yesterday as I was at BigC Xtra.

DTAC has an "office" there, upstairs nearly in the middle of the alley.

I gave the lady my phone & my Thai Driving License and it took about 3 minutes.

My phone received a confirmation SMS with my phone number & passport number.

You can make this check by calling *102# (is a Dtac SIM card)

As I was there I asked to extend my number validity to 1 year. (Currently was 3 months).

Very fast done. It cost 6 baht per 90-days extensions. So it cost me 18 baht all

You don't need to have a lot of money in it. I had about 50 baht only.

It's been some time since I've had a SIM there but I remember it was 1 2 Call SIM when I lived there. For some reason I remember AIS also. I am not sure if they are connected in some way. Don't know.

Also a question. Will I be able to purchase a SIM when I exit baggage claim as in years past? And if so,is it registered there? This register thing in new to me.

I read recently that Cambodia also requires the SIM to be registered in someone's name. I don't remember that being the case during my last visit there either.

I may as well ask since we are on the subject. If I am a 2-3x visitor per year for no longer than 2 weeks, who will use the phone mostly for call and occasionly for data whe away from hotel wifi, which card would you recommend? I am not intending to turn this into a which oil is best thread, just want a few recommendations.

Yes, 1-2-Call is AIS PAYGo

Pretty sure you will be able to get a SIM in baggage claim as before, if not there the 7-11 will have them. Not sure what the registration procedure will be, I have a pal flying in today and I told him to get one.

Who to recommend, some say DTAC for coverage but if you are staying in Pattaya it doesn't matter much.

Read this maybe.

Thanks for that and also the link. I had to chuckle at the reference to "Horrible 3G". I had hoped that Thailand may have some areas of 4G or LTE by now, considering how advanced it is compared to some of it's closest neighbors. But 3G works for vacation. I can't believe I'm still reading "2G data package". It's 2015 for chrissake!

Have things improved since the article has published 2 years ago?

4G has been rolled out in Bangkok by DTAC, and True, also have Chiang Mai and KK.

Here is a map for True. suggesting it is widespread.
