Careful in those crosswalks...

Too soon after what? Looks like a dig, well, in the UK anyway, since you gave me a red for it?????

This is a Scotsman telling you, you're barking up the wrong tree mate. That red was there before i posted. Just so it's crystal clear I did not give you the Red.

Everyone hit in the video (except maybe the one with the big truck) could have avoided getting hit by looking before crossing.

I remember when they installed the crossing lights in Pattaya. It didn't seem to make any difference if the light was red or not, and cars and especially motorcycles went right through the crosswalk. I don't even know if they are used any more. In the end, they may have caused more accidents and injuries than if they were not placed there at all because in Thailand and Pattaya in particular, it gives the pedestrian a false sense of security.

It sure does. A few days ago I was walking on Beach Road and wanted to cross but the traffic was quite intense so I pushed the button at the crosswalk and waited for the green. When it finally turned green, I nearly got killed by two cars not even slowing down at the red light. Fuckers. I mean RED and it was already dark....

I am somewhat amazed that it even worked, and un-amazed that it was totally ignored.

i actually contemplated one time to hire a motorbike taxi just to take me across the street!!

I did actually "private hire" a baht bus once, just to get across the Sukhumvit. Didn't even trust a motorcycle for that, at the time!

Maybe the Thai authorities should start handing out stiff fines for people who don't understand that stop means stop? I bet that would work.

I've lived all around the USA. In some states, they really do enforce the school zone speed limits. The fine for speeding can be $500. In those states, people pay attention. In other states, the school zone sings are posted, and yet people speed right through. The cops don't seem to care.

What would be the point of stiffer fines when the BIB don't care about traffic laws unless it involves "tea money" for them.Saw 2 kids on a motor bike hit a farangs Mercedes and the BIB just chased the kids away with their motor bike and the oldest was no more than 10/11 years old, no license no insurance no sense.

I couldn't watch the end of this video. Truly shocking.

I love Thailand........but the lack of driving skills/common sense, scares the hell out of me.

Crossings mean absolutely zilch to most drivers in Thailand, along with driving on the wrong side of the road etc etc.

Every time I go to Thailand, road accidents are seen practically daily, sometimes more than a few a day I will see.

For the amount of cops you see on "the road" (I mean at junctions/police boxes etc etc) in Thailand , the driving is in general diabolical. I have a house on the "darkside" (Soi Khaotalo) Crossing Sukhumvit Road is an ordeal . The number of cars, trucks coaches etc etc literally doing hammering through through a red light? (I don't mean "just missing" a red light........I mean when the lights have changed to red bloody ages ago!).

Another thing which amazes me? Ambulances with sirens/lights on? They get NO help whatsoever by motorists, "letting them pass" etc etc.

The lack of driving skills in Thailand is truly woeful.

I agree with you marleyboy but if I remember correctly that's actually what the driver preparation book instructs for the license test.

Well I never knew that.

I always let them pass, then I can fall in behind them and try to keep up.

Not long after the zebra crossings were installed because they were being ignored police were put on all the crossings in an attempt to educate motorists, sadly they omitted to educate the police.Instead of overseeing the traffic stopping when the lights were red they just supervised the pedestrians crossing the road regardless of whether the lights were red or green.Visitors to Thailand need to be told when visiting that crossings ARE just for decoration.

I think the only way they would work is if they were like train crossings, where a physical barrier were to come down for a few minutes to let pedestrians cross. Everyone, or nearly everyone has to stop at the lights to cross the train line on the darkside, when a train is coming Don't see many motorists wanting to challenge a speeding train :llaugh

In my early days living on Soi Siam CC there were some grisly incidents at those crossings.

Barriers on Beach Rd would be fun for the few minutes they worked.

I have enough issues with those damned self appointed police that stop traffic so that their herd of wet Chinese can cross to their coach!
