Good question GP and I'll do my best to give my opinion but not necessarily a correct answer. I agree with Cbrib, he hit the nail square on. I've been flying with EVA since 1997 back then on their modern 747-400 Combi's (the CC got an applause when we landed in BKK).

Years ago EVA offered LHR-BKK Econ for £300 I have a receipt from 1999 which was for £303 all inc for April. iirc Eva Deluxe class was £150 more. EVA always offered a price point and service which was very competitive with Thai and BA but the "clincher" was that EVA had better tackle. Their 747's all had seatback IFE, good, decent recline (1 inch or more than everyone else) plenty of drinks and good CC plus the option of an easy upgrade to Elite at the desk (me and a friend once upgraded from Econ to Biz at the check in desk - upstairs on a 747. Awesome) , whereas Thai were running stuff like "Phimara", an old 747 with a CRT TV at the front of the cabin, old and tired seats but really good food. The check in at LHR was done by Air Canada staff who were pretty damn good, I even took one of the girls out one evening.

Move on a few years and EVA are running 777's with the most powerful GE90 in the business, 115,000lb's of thrust which, at the time, was incredible. Added to that, EVA updated their livery and IFE regularly yet still managing to keep a competitive price point, but as you well know, the airline industry changed exponentially and EVA changed its game accordingly. The CC service declined, the meals got smaller and the allowance remained the same at 20kg for LH. Less food and drinks were offered and EVA introduced a "high season" running from June thru to late Aug when prices effectively doubled.

Fast forward today and the price point still remains in line with Thai for a comparible on board service. Timings are not as great as Thai seem to get priority at SVB, but the IFE, Seat comfort, pitch and recline (pre 3-4-3) are still very generous. Food is actually very good. My last 3 meals on EVA have been arguably the best I've ever had on a plane in recent times. 30 kg allow in Econ is more than fair. CC are helpful, food available at all times via the rear of the cabin and overall, for an economy direct service it's not too shabby.

Thanks for that. My daughter has just returned from Thailand on Gulf Air and she was appalled at the food, said on the return she just couldnt eat it it was slop. Yet back in the 80 when Gulf air were flying Tristars I can remember one flight where we were served fillet steak and a very very nice small bottle of red wine with it and this was in economy.

Hi

Got an email that EVA are having a bit of a sale, if you can call it that.

LHR-BKK Econ for May / June (random dates) - £529

LHR-BKK Econ Premium Econ April / May / June (Random Dates) - £830

LHR-BKK Premium Laurel April / May (Random dates) - £1800

Not bad for a direct econ fare, when Thai is a bit more (£620 - depending upon the service you book). There should be some more deals coming up over the next few months as Thai and EVA start their usual seasonal price battles.

Not sure how the 1 stop ME carriers compare.

Also, it appears that all EVA Econ flights out of LHR are now 3-4-3 in Econ.

Edit in:

A friend at work recently used EVA with the new configuration, he said it wasn't too bad but the queue for the toilets 2 hours before landing was 7 people deep!. He definitely noticed a change in service levels and comfort, and not for the better!.

I was looking at an eva flight from end may to end july a couple of days ago and the price quoted to me was £486

That's a good price for that time of year. They sometimes have a "flash" sale where over a weekend they reduce prices even further. EVA are certainly beating Thai with the aggressive marketing.

now if only I could find a decent bloody hotel...

As a bump to this thread, EVA are offering deals on their upgrades from Econ to Prem Econ. Depending upon your ticket class it runs at 15,000 miles from Europe to Asia (one way I think) which is 10k less tha before, but only for a limited period.

Flew with them yesterday, were fine.

Only 3 seat sections, and we had an extra one, as no one sitting beside us.

Nice one, good to hear the 3-3-3 is still being used on the LHR routes. Do you always use EVA?.

Mostly yes, only ever used Thai once. Was going to again, what with the new planes. But I do the 9pm flight, and read here they reverted back to the older ones.

Probably just stay with EVA, always cheaper, and i find them fine.

The last three trips from Amsterdam there has been at least an hour's delay each time they made it up three years ago not now cost of fuel I guess.I chose my seat on the return leg ages ago now I see that the seat will be assigned at the airport at check in.Starting to have my doubts about them will see how the return leg is in march.
