Anyone got one of these esp top of the line model with CD or DVD burner etc. What is the sony software like? Do you still get standard microsoft software?

I am considering buying one?

My Acer travelmate motherboard died after 18 months (purchased new) and Acer are bitching that the motherboard is not incl in the extended (purchased as a extra) warranty. i told them bullshit so they have sent my machine to Auckland to consider wether they pay or I pay. Im off to LOS week after next so I don't have time to play with. They told me my machine will be looked at in a priority line. bullshit again. sorry pete for my french.

Might just go and buy a sony and get them to repair the bugger whilst away and sell it for what i can when i get back although overall i will be about $NZ6K worse off. Probually only make about $2K off the old machine although it cost me about $6500.

My old compaq was better than this more expensive Acer...

Going to ponder this weekend...

I have a 2 Year old Sony VAIO Model with CD Burner / DVD Playback. Never had any Problems with it so far. Actuallly I am writing this now on this machine here in Pattaya ......Quite happy with this machine, has great Screen, my model is not the fastest on the Market anymore (1200 MHZ Pentium Mobile 3 Processor ...).

Two thing to take care of before you buy, though:

Make sure you get the Operatng System you want. Because Sony does not Supply Drivers or Software for other OSs. Even the Step up from WinXP Home to WinXP Prof can be a Nightmare for the most experienced user! Linux? Forget it!

And buy the Model of your choice with the Minimum RAM on Offer, and then buy RAM and step it up! Sony charges a very high price for Memory Upgrades,

Software: You get the WinXP Os, plus some special Tools and Utilities for Music Playback, Movie editing and Photo editing. These tools are quite good, but you can always update by going to Panthip Plaza ........

For Cd Burning, I think Nero was included in my Package, which I consider the best of all for Standard Purposes, but this might change with the Years / Models ....

Hope that helps!

Sunny

Sunny Valentine; thanks for replying. I was letting steam off yesterday in a internet cafe. Seems Acer Auckland will have it repaired by next wednesday. They have told me my extended warranty covers everything except the battery and power cables until June 2005.

Great so i get a new motherboard and a new screen plus other bits and pieces.

Still hope to get a Vaio one day. It is on my shopping list to replace the Acer when the time comes.

Might go and buy a Sony photo printer before going to LOS...im pondering again

  • 1 month later...

I have a late model Vaio and love it - the sony screen saver film is really nice and the TG's love it.

The only trouble I have had was with the DVD writes being seen by Serifs DVDPlus. I put Nero 6 on there and it sees it no problem. The Click to DVD sometimes drops the sound on AVI files but I have no idea why. If you are into DV editting (and I am) the i-linnk port is really useful - I had to buy one in Pattaya and it took me 4 days to locate one ... if you need one buy it at home: The new Adobe Pro video edit suite gets around the above DVD problems - also has a DVD without menu option which I really like ... just like plug and play VHS.

If you have any other Q's about it, PM me.

LoL:

I bought the waterproof version of  the Cybershot when in LOS at November ... very impressed with the quality and performance ... I'm due back in LOS for Songkran - Now I wonder why I specified a waterproof digi camera? ::)

I don't think that you can beat a vaio for reliablity, I am writing this in a vaio, which I only use as a mobile machine, connecting to my network to swap files and update.

The model number is PCG F400, and the only thing I have had to do was replace the battery.

I think that this is awesome for a four year old laptop.

I have got so used to taking the bugger around with me that I automatically subtract four kilos from my luggage allowance wherever I fly.
