Beach Road Promenade Extension
BeerBelly replied to Trvlr's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
It looks like a sidewalk curb at the edges. Unless they add a slope, that will stop small bikes dead and end up in a head over heels. You might be looking at it wrong. The image shows the right lane competed with vehicles going over it, while working on the center lane. I've ridden over one on a motorbike already and it is quite gentle. But large enough that you will get airborne if you go too fast. Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk -
I would not call the bus more comfortable nor cheaper. He stated the cost to Siem Reap was 750 ONE WAY, that's 1,500 round trip. This price most certainly does not include the 1,100 baht Cambodia visa fee. The cost for 1st class visa run was 2,500. This includes the 1,100 baht visa and 300 baht Cambodia short stay fee. That leaves 1,100 baht for the transportation and two meals. If each meal was 100 baht, that's just 900 baht for the round trip transportation, which is compared to the 1,500 for the bus is much cheaper. And "not much longer in duration" is actually twice as long. He said the bus was about 8 hours one way, it was less than 8 hours round trip for the visa run I did. Also instead of waiting for 7 passengers to deal with customs is much better than 50. Regarding the comfort, the last time I did a bus to the border, it was much more cramp than this mini bus I just took. The minibus had only two seats per row and just three rows. It was the most comfortable transportation I've taken in Thailand. But I do agree that Angkor Wat is not to be missed. It deserves at least two full days to explore. My next visa run will probably be a flight to Siem Reap to wander around Angkor.

If by clippers, you mean electric clippers, I don't have them here. If you mean scissors, that is what I do. However, I also have the ability to sort the hair on my head out myself as well, yet I've never given myself a haircut. I think I would get better results from a woman that can better control what she is doing. FYI, the last time I used electric clippers designed for male grooming, the POS nicked me and bled for a while. Yeah, Joe, I'd be lying if I said the thought had NOT crossed my mind!

The speed humps go all the way to the kerb, so the M/C taxies will not be able to avoid them. However, they are large humps. I suspect the plateau will be used as a zebra crossing as it is probably about two meters or more wide. But it makes for a convenient ramp for the M/C taxis to drive on up to the sidewalk, so you might find more motorcycles up there than one would expect (In Thailand, the expectation sadly is not zero). I'm not sure what others are seeing regarding the quality of the decking. I think it looks sturdy. The biggest possible issue is how the L brackets are attached to the concrete supporting the deck, but there are no pictures of it so no one can state whether it was done correctly or not. -
I stopped by Queen Vic yesterday to book for tomorrow, but tomorrow was full so I paid and she booked me for today. I showed up just after 6am and had their breakfast. Eggs, ham, sausage (not hot dogs either), a slice of toast and coffee. They took my passport and filled out all the required forms asking me to sign in five locations. They gave me a bottle of water here as well. The bus left promptly at 6:45 with seven passengers, six in the back and one up front. The seats were very large and comfortable and each passenger had wireless headphones for the fairly large display. (The front passenger had a small in dash screen). The bus seemed to be in good shape. Over an hour into the journey, he stopped at at PTT/7-11 for a piss/smoke/drink break. Just before 10am, we arrived at the Cambodian border. There were only a few people in line to exit the country. While in no man's land he collected all of our passports and took them to sort out the Cambodian visas. I was told to expect a 100 baht fee for not having a photo for the visa with me, but I was never asked for money or to sit for a photo. Once our visas were sorted, he gave the passports to a guy on a motorbike who ran then down to the Cambodian entry point about 1/4 mile away. While we were waiting, a few of the passengers lined up to buy duty free cigarettes. Afterwards, the driver took an inventory to see who didn't have any and purchased a carton for each of us that didn't. He must be quite the smoker. Then he handed anyone without a carton, one for them to bring back into Thailand (without asking). I would have purchased a carton, but while they did have Mild Seven Sky Blue, they didn't have Wind Blue. When our passports got back, it was time to re-enter Thailand. By this time there was about a ten minute queue. But all in all, we were at the border for less than an hour. On the way back, we stopped about 1 1/2 hours outside of Pattaya for another break. Traffic was worse, so it took a little longer to get back than to get to the border. Once at Queen Vic, we were given a choice of meals. I had the bangers and mash to somewhat satisfy my sausage and rosti craving, drinks not included. The movies that were shown were: 2 Guns (Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg) World's End (Simon Pegg) The Family (Robert Di Nero and a very hot Belle Blake) Paranoia (Harrison Ford), but didn't finish. While at the border, the front passenger asked what I thought of the driver. Personally, I thought he was standard Thai aggressive, but nothing too harry. The roads were bumpier than I expected them to be. Thanks for the recommendations. I will use 1st class visa runs again.

Yes, this does appear normal. I guess they leave it into the hands of fate. Today I was riding out of soi 13 turning onto Beach Rd. As I slowed down to check the oncoming traffic, a guy zoomed by me on the left right into traffic. It's no wonder Asian drivers have a bad reputation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKcSZfY1sf4 -

They are adding speed humps now. Several spots on beach road now have the new right lane closed while the cement is drying. I wonder if this was an afterthought as a result of the speeding tourist killing someone on Jomtien's beach road. -
That was my original plan that fell through. If I were to try to make the trip now, it would cost $1100 just for the plane ticket. I will do Angkor Wat for my next visa run.

Thanks, the Queen Vic one looks good. Only six passengers per van.

My original plans to head out of the country before my current stamp expires fell through, so now I need to do a visa run to activate my next 60 days. Can anyone recommend a comfortable visa run company. I'm not a fan of staying in a minibus all day, so comfort is of utmost importance.

Beach Rd. dangerous after 2:00 am?
BeerBelly replied to streeteats's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
I saw a potential gold pick-pocketing on second road last month. As I was walking, I saw a ladyboy talking to a Russian couple. The ladyboy briskly walked away from them. Then the couple shortly ran after her and stopped her. He was really angry shouting at her in Russian. He was pointing to his wrist, but I had no idea what he was actually saying. But evidently the ladyboy did as she kept saying she didn't take it. The Russian had a hold of the LB's arm and grabbed her purse and went through it. I passed by them and approached the original spot where they were first together and saw the bracelet on the ground. Then the ladyboy came rushing back to this spot and pointed to the bracelet on the ground. It was an interesting tactic, take the bracelet then drop it on the ground to pick up later. That way, she could honestly say she didn't have it. But I think in this case, she was afraid the Russian was going to beat the hell out of her, so she pointed out the bracelet to the guy she took it from. I would say this is a more likely crime than anything violent. And traffic accidents are probably even more likely to happen than violent crimes. -
Beach Rd. dangerous after 2:00 am?
BeerBelly replied to streeteats's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
Yeap, Pattaya and Thailand are dangerous places with respect to the roads. But I would say a good 90% of the accidents could be avoided by the victims with simple vigilance, probably more in western countries. This isn't to say that the victims are at fault, only they could avoid getting hit if they use some common sense. I've seen so many times where the pedestrians assume they have the right of way and step into traffic. Legally, they may have, but the laws of physics are not on the side of the pedestrian. Even if I have a green light, I wait until I see traffic stopped or slowing a great deal before I would step off the curb. Just the other day, I was in Krabi and my diver went through a red light at least three seconds after it had changed. He saw the light change, then put on his hazard lights, and didn't even slow down. Three seconds is enough for a pedestrian to step off the curb in front of the speeding car. In this case, the guy was hit by a bus that was turning from Beach Rd to Pattaya Tai. The bus could not have been going too fast that the pedestrian was surprised by it. -
While I don't care for the practices of the current government, rule by protests of minority is not the way to go either. Yingluck had a chance to become a good PM. All she had to do was put the country first instead of focusing on getting her brother back (and potentially in power). I left Bangkok early this morning so I could avoid the mess of today and whatever happens in the future.

I'm thinking of heading back to Ao Nang in January, so maybe you can buy one for me then. Here are the cave pictures. https://plus.google.com/photos/100393320857423739587/albums/5954913156638671089?authkey=CLm5nIjtpJexcQ And here is an album from a longtail trip around Phi Phi Lei. https://plus.google.com/photos/100393320857423739587/albums/5954908822135496833?authkey=CLfA5d3FpZqUBg

I haven't done diving in from Ao Nang in years, so I can't recommend any shops. However, what I do remember was I didn't like how long it took for the boats to get out to the dive sites. I think Phuket is better. But now that Ao Nang is getting crowded, they might have some faster dive boats. By the way, I did something new while I was in Ao Nang this week. While I was walking along the water in Krabitown, longtail boat drivers came up to me to offer a tour. I'd been to Krabi at least 10 times, but never did this. Basically, for 500 baht, the driver takes you to a cave on the opposite side of the river, then through the mangroves to a fish place, then back. All about an hour. The cave had a 30 baht entrance fee. While I was there, they had some fake cave paintings and some statues of people representing cavemen and archaeologists. I read some of the stuff there that said there were real paintings in other caves. So I looked online and found Tham Phi Hua To (Big headed ghost cave) in Au Luek about 60km from Ao Nang. So the next day my girl and I rode up there. Again, you need to rent a boat, either a long tail or a kayak. There are two caves, one called Tham Lot (Tai) which has a river that runs through it. Our driver told us he wasn't sure if he could go in because the tide was high. He did manage to do it even though the bow of boat was higher than some of the stalactites were hanging. After that we went to Tham Phi Hua To and enjoyed the cave with just the two of us. There are about 70 paintings there about 3000 years old.

NEED way to pattaya floating market =D
BeerBelly replied to lovetravelling's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
I agree that it is a waste of time, and money. I went there on a motorbike to see what it was about. Saw the 200 baht entrance fee and turned around. If you have a work permit or are Thai, then entrance is free, however. -
PM facility compromised, anyone else?
BeerBelly replied to ikkrang's topic in Technical problems or questions.
If addicts is down it is possible their password database was compromised. If you are using the same password and user name that could explain it. It might not be a person doing this but a bunch of bots hence the real time changes. Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk -
Star Trek III. Back then I still thought of him as Jim from Taxi and it was great to see him as a Klingon.
