Its been about 4 years since I had a license and ran 2 pubs in the UK, the method one gets a license changed last year, but the law hasn't. 1. Anyone 18 yrs or older may enter a licensed premises and buy alcohol, providing they are not drunk!. 2. Anyone aged 14yrs to 17 yrs may enter a licensed premises and order/drink soft drinks. 3. Anyone aged 5yrs to 14 yrs may enter a licensed premises escorted by someone 18yrs or older, drink soft drinks but may not order such. 4. Anyone aged 5 yrs or above may drink alcohol ( this to cover wine, cider, bottled shandy etc.) in a restaurant, ONLY if taken as part of or with a meal and ordered by someone 18yrs or older. 5. Selling alcohol to/or allowing a person to stay on the premises if they are 'Obviously' drunk is an offence, and can result in loss of your license and a large fine. Before last year, licenses were granted by the local Magistrate, and was tied to a particular pub or pubs, unless there was an objection from the police, ( the police licensing officer). The police did not have to state any reason for the objection. Appeals were VERY rare, and 99.999% unsuccessful. Last year the UK licensing method changed, the applicant now applies to his local council, if successful, he his granted a license which he/she can take anywhere in the country, the new license is in the form of an ID card with photo, I am not sure how long each one lasts, 10yrs+ I think??, ( could be wrong), but this will do the licensee for any pub or bar in the country that he buys or manages. There are some other detailed rules about the licensee nominating a responsible person to run the bar in his absense for short periods of time, but normally, a person with a license must be present in the building during the times that the pub/bar is open, failure to adhere carries a £5000.00 fine and his license is withdrawn, or the license is objected to by the police at any time, you lose your licence. The last resort of the licensee is, He has the RIGHT to refuse ANYONE entry into his/her premises and failure to comply with an instruction to leave the Pub/Bar/restaurant could result in prosecution of the offender, using the new Criminal Trespass Law, also passed recently. A guided tour of the Rockhouse
SOLOTREKKER replied to mulphy's topic in Bars/Gogos/Business Owners' Forum
Thanks Mulphy, youv'e got cool looking place here, now I am divided about where I want to stay, I usually crash at the RG because of the pool, Ive not stayed in the 'action' before, and I still like the idea of a pool, but RH looks pretty good to me. I normally only come to LOS in low season, but this could change this year or the early next year. I now have the RH on my list of possibilities, I will be in touch with RH via your website. Thx SOLO. -
Quote Vidman:"Well a few weeks ago i was in alanlad's place and got THE coldest bottle of heineken. It did have a little ice floating around there but an old trick is to place a 10baht coin under the bottle " Roland, Ive found your lost 10bht coin, Vidman has it.!!!! Do I get a reward now, LOL.

Yep you are right Baht Bus is only 10 baht, But I nearly always had a TG with me, so hence the 20Bht. I have never gone ST, I always try and hook up with a BG/GG-girl and go for the GFE experience. But 10 bht or 20bht, it makes no difference to me, the difference is pennies!!!. -

SOLOTREKKER replied to tobutterflyornottobutterfly's topic in Hotel and Accommodation Questions
Simple solution, check in the Areca for a week and take a trip to the RG to check it out, if they have a suite available for you to book, have a beer at the small bar and get a feel for the place, and Im sure if there is a suite available, you will get a look at one. Or Vice-Versa -
what's near Residence Gardens?
SOLOTREKKER replied to mandajay's topic in Hotel and Accommodation Questions
If you walk out the RG, turn right, walk down about 150 yds, you will find a long St of shops and street vendors selling everything, a 20/30 min walk up and down, and your ready for a dip in the pool when you get back. The RG is not that far from the main areas of entertainment, but just enough to give you quiet and 'unhurried' hol experience. The main block/front entrance is all 1 bed suites and the next block, other side of the Restaurant, I think is all 2 bed suites, the 2nd, much quieter pool is behind this 2nd block, but is a bit too shaded in the PM. There is Sat photo of the RG in relation to the rest of Patts in the newbies section, with a marker for the FLB. -
If you get a large Ice/beer tub made, make sure you have a simple tap at the bottom or corner with a length of tubing for the water to drain away, if it is ever so slightly tilted this will help. You dont want to be humping a tub of water out every 4/5 hours to empty it. And yes, I like my beer ICE cold.

My best experience's of GoGo's is, I go in, am shown to a seat or find one myself by a service girl, she takes my order, It comes, I sit and have a drink while checking out the atmosphere, the dancers and those not having their turn dancing, If I get a wave or two from anyone on stage, or waiting their turn to grab a pole, thats fine, when I am close to the end of my first drink and getting ready for a 2nd drink, I am ready to buy a LD or two with the girls that have shown some interest in me, if any of the girls seem to made a 'connection' with me, and I them, then I would like some time, maybe 1 or 2 LD with her to make my mind up. If I am interested in one, then I will buy her another couple of LDs, what I dont like is when the Mamasan comes to the girl and tells her its her turn up at the poles and she has to leave, If she asks me if she can go dance, I will either agree or I might want to buy her another LD or two, to spend more 'alone' time with her. On the whole I would say that, as you are nearing the end of your first drink, have checked the place out and have got a few responses, ie, waves and some eye contact, and have expressed an interest in 1 or 2 girls, I give the universal hand sign for offering a drink, and get a positive response, then I am ready to go with the flow. I think unless you specifically ask the Mamasan over for a talk or drink, her function should be to ensure the smooth transition of the girls on the poles, (exept those getting LDs from customers), protecting the girls from rude, drunk or stroppy falangs, keeping the girls inline with Bar policy and keeping an eye on the cash flow. Time is relative, and I think that Half an hour is too long to be left sitting alone in a hostess bar or GOGO, If a customer has seen a girl on the poles that he has an 'interest' in, then the Mamasan should see this, and allow the girl to come off stage for a LD, if the girl wants to, and stay with the customer, as long as the LDs are coming. I understand this would require the Mamasan to do a bit of juggling with her girls, and if the place is very busy, keeping girls rotated on the stage can sometimes be a task, but if the girls are getting LDs, this benefits the bar, as well as the girls. Girls on the poles are not earning cash for the bar, they are just 'eye candy' for the punters who come in, have one or two drinks and leave for the next 'eye candy' review. Having one, two or even 3 girls around 1 customer is fine, as long as they are all earning LDs and there is enough girls to 'man' the poles. I am sure that the girls themselves would much rather be sitting down with a customer, earning LDs, than dancing on the stage. If they express no interest at all in any of the customers, they get no LDs, and they will be at the Poles, ergo-Incentive to keep the customers and mamasan happy that the LDs and customers checkbin tickets are coming in. In my experience of running Pubs here in the UK, there are alot of new punters who come into a bar, buy one drink, just to check the place out, so his first 'contact' is the barstaff, or in the case of LOS, the service girl, if near to the end of his first drink, no-one has spoken to him, or expressed some interest in him, or engaged him in some simple conversation, he will drink up and leave!. If a punter is alone at the bar and close to the end of his first drink and no-one has spoken to him or shown any interest in him, he will leave, to this end I think that the service girls would play a significant role in engaging him in simple and friendly conversation for a few minuets as he nearing the end of his first drink. The punters first contact is always the barstaff/service girls, it should not be the Boss or the Mamasan, unless he requests it. If a group of say 3/4 punters come in, find the service girls friendly and the dancers waving at them with lots of eye contact, thats 4 customer drinks, 4 LDs and on it goes. If any of the Hostesses/dancing girls think they can manage a BF with any of the Falangs, then it would be 'up to them', of course you dont want your bar to lose all your Pole girls too early, but they can always say, good you come back at such or such a time, I be here for you!, after recieving the BF of course. I think that the FLB has got the 'balance' right, as well as a couple of other GOGOs. I spent 8 months in training in a UK pub with an 'old couple' who had been in the business 40yrs, and I ran two of the pubs they owned for a year each, before deciding to move on, so have a 'little' bit of bar know-how. So as to How long????, I would say the time it takes to get close to, or at the end of the first drink, if you have not engaged the customer near or at the end of this first drink, either with your girls, your level of service or the friendly atmosphere of your 'Bar' and staff, he will go find a bar that does!!. My 2 Bahts worth. SOLO.

The Residence Garden
SOLOTREKKER replied to tobutterflyornottobutterfly's topic in Hotel and Accommodation Questions
I never felt the need to walk to WS from the RG, the baht buses are too frequent and cheap to make walking an issue, 20bht and a 150mter walk to WS is no hardship. The front pool is good, its more or less shielded from the main road by vegitation. Room service is good, as is the maid service, maid will come AM or PM if you dont want to be disturbed, and dont forget to leave the maid a small tip each day, this will make her happy, have them empty the fridge of all the hotel stuff, ( exept the 2 bottles of water you get free each day) and fill it yourself with stuff from a 7/11 or one of the supermarkets. The pool is out of bounds from 7pm each evening as the area around the pool is used for restaurant tables, as wll as the main restaurant. No problem bringing back 1/2 BGs each night, they sometimes like to use the pool before they depart the next day, and drinks & food are brought to your pool chair if you want. Ask for a pool towel at reception if you want, its free. The all you can eat BBQ each night is good, and cooked to order. Perhaps you might want to try an intro to scuba diving, its done at the, 'quiet back pool' and 'IB' the owner can make all the arrangements, gurgling around in the pool with the scuba stuff is fun, and then you can do an escorted 'open water' dive from the mermaids diving school boat, its an all day thing, and food is provided as part of the cost. A good clean hotel with nice sized suites and balconies and very friendly staff and security, although a little expensive but I think worth it, for a hassle free time. -
All countries with diplomatic relations have bilateral agreements ref swapping passport data bases. Since the swapping of these data bases has been 'digitised', the immigration officials dont have to read through huge books of passport details, ( this is what they used to do). I am surprised these days that people are still unaware of just how much information govts hold on their citizens. Computer data bases have their down side too.!!!!!!!!!

I grew up on my grandfathers farm in Scotland, 550 acres mixed agriculture and Dairy, 35 milk cows, a few pigs. Bloody hard work, I couldn't wait to get away, left when I was 16. Trust me when I say that it never goes to plan on a small farm, while we were never hungry and life was ''Sort of'' Ok, There was always something going wrong, just when it seemed to going right. A small farm will need 24hr maintenance, and you cant just leave it to work its self out. fruit growers have a CONSTANT battle with pests as do potato growers, and you cant just keep putting spuds in year in year out in the same spot unless you use modern fertilizers and chemical pest control. I believe Thailand is lucky in that you get 2 crops a year, maybe even 3, but unless you fertilize after each crop, you will quickly exhaust the soil, even then you will still have 'rotate' your fields and crops to keep the soil and supply healthy, that is if you want to make money from it. My Grandfather spent 60 years of his life battling to make it work, and all he managed was to 'Just get by'. The only Farms that make good money are really big ones, 1000 acres plus and even they require a huge amount of commitment. But its a life time commitment, a daily struggle, and bloody long long sweaty worrying hours. If all you want is a 'Hobby' farm then it might work, but your not going to make any money from it, where ever you are. Marketing is a nightmare if you dont use a middleman, and doing any marketing yourself will only increase your, already heavy burden. Farming!!, No not for me, I remember !!!!!!!. No No No !.

I agree, the RG is one hell of a hotel, I could find no fault to find, the staff are the best, the food is great, the suites are perfect, and I did on occaision take more that two girls back to my suite, only one time did I have to pay extra for a guest, but I had 4 that night, and I had to pay 600 baht, but I didnt mind, the staff were great and there was no problem passing them all through reception. All in all I will be back and I will be staying at the RG. 10/10.

Rainy seasons/Monsoons are themselves quite fickle, but during Monsoon it does'nt drizzle much at all, some countries high up in South America have rainy seasons where the deluge is almost non-stop for several days at a time, but in asia monsoon rain comes suddenly, in great quantity and mostly only for short spells at a time. If you did'nt experience any rain during your stay during rainy season, and you have never experienced Monsoon downpours, maybe you were lucky,(matter of Opinion), But you have missed something you may have enjoyed ;D, maybe next time you will get lucky and get caught out in one ;D ;D its and experience alright

I will have to rely on english speaking Thais to get by, I expect I will pick up a few simple Phrases but thai being such a complex language I dont think I learn much in the few weeks that I will be in LOS, I speak Passable German, and all my family are Gaelic (Scottish) speakers, But its been such a long time since I was in Scotland that I have forgotten most of it, when I was small all I heard was gaelic, and now most if it is gone from my head, I learnt German in the 60's from watching TV there all the time, it takes 18 months of intensive single language study to get to degree level, and even some students fail, I work in a language school which teaches Russian, Arabic and all the European Languages. My advice from my travells is to pick up what you need when you are 'in country' and take a small phrase book that you can show a local to interpret for you, I have bought the Rough Guide pocket book of Thai because it has english phrases with the Thai writing to accompany each phrase, because Thai, Like The various Chinese dialects use pitch and tone to describe the same word with different meanings it would be too difficult learn recreationaly. I expect that even Pete is still learning the language and he lives there!. As always politeness will get you much further than being fluent in Thai.

SOLOTREKKER replied to okulyt's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
So what can go wrong on your first trip to LOS?.- 1. The night before you leave your house is burgled, and your suitcase and passport are stolen > 2. Some one else goes with your I.D. and suitcase :'( 3. The taxi to the airport breaks down and crashes, you get injured and put in hospital for your holiday > 4. Your wife rings the travell agent and finds out that your not going to Hong Kong on business, and demands its me or Thailand, pick :-/ 5. You find out that Bin Laden is on the same flight as yours > 6. You so so exited on the flight to LOS that you drink too much, get arrested for being drunk, get DVT on the plane and have a heart attack in BKK arrivals 7. The plane crashes on the way and you just dont make it to LOS 8. You pick the first Taxi Hawker you meet when you arrive and get mugged > 9. There is a REAL Govt crackdown in LOS. ??? 10. Your wife/girlfriend finds out where your going and puts a small plastic bag filled with talcum powder in your suitcase. 11. You go through a time warp and arrive in LOS in the stone age ::) 12. You fall in love with a BG and leave with a broken heart :'( 13. You get drunk in a bar and get stroppy with the police when they come to sort you out, you do this because you think the Thai Police can be messed with ;D 14.
