Hotel w Internet and Guest friendly
MrMango replied to spoojebob's topic in Hotel and Accommodation Questions
I'm not sure what you want - Do want a hotel with a computer in the room, or a internet connection for your laptop? I stayed at the Eastony Residence hotel on Soi 10, and the 7th floor had wired internet in the room. New hotel, clean rooms and good location, I paid about 1100 Bt in high season with ABF for 2 (Teelek and me) -
What about the bars on Soi 6? Don't forget these!!! I am 65 and have moved here, partly BECAUSE oft he medical treatment. While the U.S. has first class medical facilities, I could not afford to pay for them, and the average facility sucks. You can get the equivalent Medicare coverage here for about $100 per month that will give you first class coverage at top hospital's here. I think medical care here is first class and very affordable.

We went to dinner in Jomtien Beach last week, and at least 10 cats were there competing for the food - All over the chairs, etc. Very annoyning...

I live in Jomtien Beach Condos. They are nice, and the buildings S1 and S2 are fairly close to the beach. They are not 32 sq. meters each,, more like 30 meters each. I am happy with ours, but it is in no way classified as an Upmarket Condo"

New (hotels?) on Thappraya Road
MrMango replied to kerbushar's topic in Hotel and Accommodation Questions
Any place on the Beach road you can find Baht-busses. We live about 2 kilometers from the start of Beach road, and never had to wait for a bus more than a few seconds. Jomtien is very laid back with plenty of couples, children, etc. and not near as 'In your face" as Pattaya. but that is only 20 baht away... -
I just took my new wife to the dental clinic between Central road and Soi 7, just up from Beach Road. The Dentist is a little doll, married to the doctor who runs the medical clinic there also. She had x-rays, a complete exam and needed 5 fillings - Total cost $2,000 Baht. On Thursday, she discovered that she had a wisdom tooth impacted. I made an appointment, and had it removed - 400 Baht... What a Country!

New (hotels?) on Thappraya Road
MrMango replied to kerbushar's topic in Hotel and Accommodation Questions
I have noticed several small hotels on the road, but most of the construction is apartments/condos I think. Why not keep going to Jomtien and stay there? There are a lot of really nice hotels near the beach, and a lot of guest houses also. -
The one that I was talking about wast he Eastiny Residency on Soi 10. The Eastony on Soi 8 did not have in room internet when I checked in November
-
I stayed their last November, and thought that it was good value. At the time, my most important item was in room broadband, which they had. My Telac at the time negotiated a rate for 2 inc. American breakfast for about 1100 Baut per night as I remember, and I progally could have gotten a better rate if I tried. Bed size was the usual King/Queen size, and the room was quite spacious. Shower was fine, with no excess water anywhere. No in room safes, but no problems at he front desk to use their safe. The only problem that I had is that you cannot access the safe between 24:00 and ab

As I have posted, I am still awaiting Broadband in my apartment, so I took my Vonage ATA and telephone to the local Internet shop in Jomtien Beach. No problems with plugging it in to the Internet, and then I proceeded to make 30 minutes of calls to the U.S. All of a sudden the owner rushes in and demands that I stop! He insists that I am using his phone line to make long distance calls. After showing that I am plugged in to his Internet router and not his telephone system, he still demands that I stop! Some people are so Th Century....

It's not just the U.S. Japans average age is something like 10 years older than the U.S. average, and Western Europe would be the same, if i wasn't for all of the immigration from the east. In short, the Western World as we know it is disappearing, due to low birth rates, and rampant immigration. Think about all of the wealthy Westerners who are about to retire - Where do they live?

I stayed there in December - Nice and new, not 5 star, as I had to carry my own luggage up to the room. My Teelac at the time made the reservation, and I think I paid about 1100 Baut with ABF and Internet. My Vonage kept falling over, as you share a DSL ,line with all of the rooms, and it required too much Bandwidth. Nice place, and I'll stay there again if I need to (I now have a Condo in Jomtien Beach)

I am now living in Jomtien Beach, and I will check out the self storage. I to, needed one, as I moved here in increments, and this would have been a big help. Great opportunity for a westerner, IMHO.

Any recent Info/Opinion of Roof Garden Inn?
MrMango replied to Grandpollo's topic in Hotel and Accommodation Questions
I stayed there a year ago. The owner is very nice, and the rooms are clean and good size. Like everybody says, it is a little out of the action, and after a few days, I moved to town. Good value, except for the location. -
They did not have in room saves, but the lobby safe worked fine for me.

Identifying mystery broadband activity
MrMango replied to bob2005's topic in Technical problems or questions.
I have fond that a hardware router is the best firewall. You can monitor your connection, even if your computer is off line, and most can give you a detailed printout of all activity. -
My Vonage router did not operate correctly all of the time last November. I think the problem is most hotels share a DSL connection, and when somebody downloads a large file, there is not enough bandwidth to support it and it drops calls. I am now living in Jomtien Beach, awaiting installation of my DSL and I'll know if it works on a dedicated line.

The best thing about VOIP service with a ATA (Analogue Telephone Adapter) is that it looks and acts like a regular phone. Your computer does not have to be turned on (Broadband must be), and you have a standard telephone handset. You pick it up and get a dial tone, and when somebody rings you, it rings... Most also have extra services that are free, like when somebody calls you, you can set it up so 2 lines ring (Your home number and mobile for example). Also they have voice-mail that you can access from the net anywhere. You also can have several numbers. One can be in Los Angles and anot

I flew last week EVA HNL -BKK. Great flight and plane - 777 TPE BKK a 747 Connection a couple of hours, and it arrived at noon, rather than midnight the other carriers scheduled. I will fly them again.
-
Eastony - No problems for guests.
-
You forgot the important things - How are the Birds there - Any doable?
-
In my previous life, I helped set up a VOIP service for Oz, and I have a bit of expertise with it. IMHO, Skype is like a ham radio - Sure you can talk with it for free, but yo have to use a mike and speaker, etc. and the protocol that use is not standard. Most providers provide an adapter box that includes a router that also has a telephone jack. You simply plug any phone into it, and you have a normal telephone, except your phone number does not have to be where you are. I have a Las Vegas telephone number, and when I am in Pattaya, my kids simply dial the number that they normall

That may help. I understand that their is a utility program that guarantees that any data will be erased. It writes data to all sectors 5 times to prevent somebody reading any faint signals from previous writings. I don't know about Cameras or flash disks as I do not know the technical details on how they are formatted, but I would guess that if you could overwrite every sector, that would be adequate to destroy any old data.
-
I have had an unfortunate experience in dealing with U.S Customs. Remember that if Customs really gets a bug up there ass, they can retrieve data from a flash drive or camera that has been erased. Most of these devices are like windows - They do not erase the data, only the address where the data is. They have software that can scan the device and retrieve data even when it appears empty.

I know a good one in San Francisco.
