Depending on the season a direct flight will cost US$450-800, or more in the silly seasons -- New Year, Golden Week, Obon (Summer Vacation in August). Not cheap! :clap2

I try to fly ANA for mileage and book direct online. It's all pretty slick. They have a flight around 11 am that arrives around 4 pm local time. JAL and TG have similar schedules.

All three, plus NW and UAL, have 6-7 pm departures that get you to BKK around 11. Trouble with NW and UAL, apart from the crappy service, is their departure times from BKK are absurd. NW leaves at 6 am and UAL around 7. ANA has a midnight flight that gets you back to Tokyo around 7 am.

Generally, you're better off booking directly with the airline from Tokyo but most of the specials end 21 days before departure. Travel agencies ain't much cheaper, can not confirm your seating requests, have separate check-ins and sometimes offer only 50% of your mileage because it's a "special" seat. :clap2

here is where those FF miles can really pay off. 40K miles gets from tokyo to BKK on any star alliance partner. That includes thai which has a ton of flights every day.

When i have looked for fares from tokyo to bkk iI have often found it difficult to find a fars of less than 800 and sometime 1200. :clap2

I have flown with JAL, ANA, UA and Thai Air from Tokyo to BKK as part of my flight itinerary from the States. I don't know what the cost would be for just Tokyo to BKK R/T, all my flights have ranged from $600 to $1,000 from Sacramento.

If you are a western sized person, avoid JAL at all costs. Seat quality on JAL international is one step lower than Delta regional.

Iv'e never had a bad seat on Thai Air domestic or international.

From Tokyo I have flown on

Air India - the cheapest and packed. Price was about JPY 40k - about USD 380. As I recall the flights are just on Wed and Sun. No personal entertainment systems in economy class, just the one big screen. But if you are looking for a cheap flight this is it.

NW - Crappy schedule as mentioned by an earlier poster. That 6:05am flight back to Tokyo is too fcking early and getting in at midnight is no picnic either. Once I saw a punter in Nana with his bags enjoying the view before his early am flight back. On the plus side for NW, they are using Airbus planes which have video on demand entertainment systems for us po' folks in economy. You can start, stop, fast forward and rewind to your hearts content. The last price I paid was JPY 51k - about USD 470.

Cathay Pacific - Great but you must transfer in HK. Last price paid was about JPY 70k - about USD 650. If you have enough time you could do a layover for a day or 2 to explore the sights and sounds of HK.

And here is a web site which allows you to check prices and schedules. However it does not have information for JAL or ANA. Must be some sort of dispute. Anyway it will give you an idea of the prices.

Although Air India offers a direct flight, and is somewhat cheaper than the larger carriers, several travel agents advised me against it because the flight is notoriously late by 2-4 hours. Dealing with the Narita white elephant consumes enough time in itself. If you're on a 3-4 week trip, perhaps you can live with it, but on a 5-7 day escape, not for me.

Very worst trip I have taken out of my 25+ trips was on JAL too small seating steer clear.
