Northwest's mechanics have voted to strike if they cannot reach a deal soon. Soon an impasse will be announced and then a 30 day cooling off period between the two. After that the mechanics can go on strike. Going to happen just about the time I am leaving.

"Northwest's mechanics have voted to strike if they cannot reach a deal soon"

Yes, they were talking about that just before I bought my shuttle to the coast last week, and I didn't want ANYTHING to do with NWA if that was in the offing!

They had some decent round trip non-stop prices to LAX.

I'm headed for the coast on the night of the 15th and that would have been just too close for comfort!

NWA has said they can work around it with supervisors somehow if the strike happens but that's not very reassuring.....

Do you want someone who's been flying a desk for a dozen years servicing your airplane?

Sorry, I hope your flight works out, but I fucking detest NWA.

Nothing but bad experiences, latest being them raising the Asia RT biz FF reward from 90 to 120K without notice, so I am sitting on 100K FF miles I almost don't want.

I want to use the 100K ASAP, so I can proceed to do voodoo dances for them to go chapter 11.

ex is ass. vp operations asia.

they want machanics to strike.

already got new ones in training in south carilina and will put them on for scab wages and break the union.

all of the major work will be farmed out (out sourced).

they'ved planned this for some time and will succed, the fucking bastards.

state of MN gave chinceky 600million to stay and he sold off everything and leveraged it all back and skipped off back to califorina with a billion or so in his pocket and now the company is wondering why they have cash flow problems.

bottom line

machanics strike will not interupt service.

the situation will affect thousand of lives of NW workers

I'm sitting on 85,000 ff miles, haven't been able to find a decent price, a ff flight for less than 120,000 and no cash and miles flights. NWA 1000usd above most others, and their flight attendents are old and ugly.

While I think the unions have shot themselves in the foot many times, I always have been and always will be union. Many people today don't have a clue about the sacrifices made by the workers years ago that enable them to have what they have today. Saddly they are letting those sacrifices go for naught. My dad was railroad man for many yrs and even after being in mngt position would not cross a picket line, any picket line, made plant mngt come out to meet him.

I've had trouble making decision on buying ticket because of ff miles with NWA, now, no problem. China Air for me.

Yes, NWA can stew in their own juices. Not only are their prices to Asia consistently higher than other carriers, the staff and flight attendants are just plain surly.

Add that to late flights, equipment and maintenance problems, and trouble re-deeming freq flier miles, this carrier gets what it deserves.

Hub is correct, the sooner this company enters chapter 13 or 7-the better.

Finally, for those of you who want to live on the edge, take the Minneapolis-Amsterdam flight aboard an ancient DC-10. You may be asked to go to the rear of the aircraft to re-wind the big rubber band that motivates this plane. Jimmy

Let me add my .02 cents to this conversation:

Do I think NW mechanics even make the 30 days to strike? I can't see it, though it may happen. I think a likelier course is they hammer out an agreement on day 28 or 29 or NW locks them out on day 29 and brings in scabs they've been training all over the country. Either way, the mechanics will lose. Hell, even the union president will be furloughed if the job cuts come to fruition. Anyways, if they think what they're being offered now is crappy, imagine what'd they'd lose if NW files Chapter 11. They'd be lucky to have a job!

Some folks have been saying they think the President would invoke the "no transportation industry strike" ban under law, but I can't see it this time. People who know US aviation know a major US airline needs to disappear for the health of the others. If you're a NW pilot, FA, or agent, do you cross the picket line? Hard choice! The mechanics would never forgive you if you did, but OTOH if you didn't kiss your job and company goodbye.

Can't really change my plans as I fly out of the Twin Cities and NWA has a monopoly on the area. I was able to book a flight with 60000 frequent flyer miles roundtrip to LOS. I think NWA is positioning themselves where the mechanics cannot win. If they strike the airline will employ replacement workers and if backed into a corner file chapter 11 which will still lead to cuts in pay and workers. Other questions are of course if the govenment will step in and also if the fight attendants and pilots will cross the picket lines. I will guarntee this that if I do not make it out of here on 4 Sep I will be one pissed off farang. :D
