hi guys, I can get a flight from Newcastle-Schipol-bkk flying China Airlines economy for £565 (next july) or I upgrade to business class and pay £945, my question is, it worth paying the extra £380?

Any help would be much appreciated cause I cant make up my bastard mind!

Thanks guys!

I'm due to go out prob with BA in Jan on a direct flight. I'll be in economy but turning up in a smart suit to see about the chances of a free upgade.

Maybe take a chance - buy economy and see if you get lucky. Do you know how full China airlines tends to be.

That doesn't still work anymore, does it?

I got free upgrades twice with Virgin Atlantic wearing shorts

Being a frequent flyer with an airline works better than a suit for an upgrade.

BA flights tend to be pretty full and certainly on one flight it appeared that every single seat was taken. I suspect that if you got an upgrade it would simply be to World Traveller plus. The extra legroom is good but the down side is that all the screaming brats are just behind you in economy.

However, you never know.

NWA gives me comp upgrades trans pacific pretty often nowadays. But that's because I'm platinum in their frequent flyer club.

it worth paying the extra £380?

Depends on how opulent you are !

I fly China Airlines all the time. I think economy is ok.

I don't think it's worth upgrading.

I also fly China all the time, I think it is how large you are not if you have a bit more cash ?

I notice you had a thread about the marrot hotel, now I would NEVER pay the price they charge

BUT I always fly business class with China & think that the price is well worth it B)

Going out end of Jan from Newcastle £890

Enjoy

Be Nice

makavelli,

China Airlines operates three different 747 configurations on the AMS-BKK route. If you have the cash to spare all are well worth the extra in their business class cabins IMHO, the later aircraft particularly so. If you do book with them, get onto their London office (0207 436 9001) to pre-allocate your seat up to 90 days prior to the date of travel. Row 10 in the upper cabin seems to be the most sought after seats regardless of the aircraft configuration. If I lived in the north-east they would be my airline of choice to BKK ....... none of the hassles associated with Heathrow or travelling cross-country to MAN.

Thanks Tom,

Moby69 what is wrong in wanting to stay at the Marriott, now with my teaching job I can only make the trip to Pattaya once or maybe twice a year due to term times so meaning I want to stay in a top hotel. Personally speaking I dont class this as thinking myself as being ''large''. I just want to enjoy my months long stint in Pattaya.

I watch all expenditures since my goal is to never have to work again. i guess there's a bunch of guys who have done well for themselves financially on this Forum.

I do think though that if someone has any debt whatsoever (with the exception of mortgages) and this includes car loans, then you should stick with cattle class.

Mak,

you have the wrong "large"

I have 46 inch chest a 42 inch waist. When I am in coach (economy class) I am pretty much stuffed in a seat with no room to move. If I was 80 lbs lighter with a 38 chest and a 30 inch waist economy would probably not seem so bad. Since I am united prem exec I rarely have to sit with people next to me except during say xmas season. And occasionally the upgrade me to business calss with the wider bigger seats.

If that was not the case I would be flying EVA delux class all the time. :o 2guns

I think I am just going to go for either KLM economy class or China Economy class, the only thing with KLM economy is the inflight enterainment is shit because u dont have a screen in the headrest infront of u, unless this has changed?.

Has China been getting any newer planes because the last time I flew with them they had one screen for the whole of one section of economy class, anyone know?

Cheers lads for all the insight.

Like you I am based in the North East and have flown NCL-AMS-BGK with China Airlines on five occasions. Three in economy and the last two in Dynasty (Business).

I am 6'1" and find economy cramped to say the least. This means on the outward leg in economy I get no sleep at all as I cannot stretch my legs out and relax. Return not too bad but as the flight leaves at around 2.30AM I am ready for a kip anyway.

In December last year I flew Dynasty for the first time. Now I would not return to economy as by comparison its a nightmare. Obviously there is more leg room in Dynasty. On my June trip the outward flight had the new Dynasty seat configuration. This results in massive legroom. When I sat in my seat and stretched my foot out horizontally I could just touch the seat in front with my toe. 2guns

Other benefits of Dynasty are that you are allowed to board before the economy hoards start to pile on. At AMS, whilst economy are being boarded, you are being served wine/champagne/ beer and canapés prior to take off.

Outward once airborne you are served a five course meal with more wine etc. :o

For in-flight entertainment you have your own monitor with a choice of movies etc.

IMO the price difference between economy and Dynasty does not do justice to the difference between the quality of service and comfort.

Chok dee kap.

makavelli,

sorry if I have confused you :clueless

What I meant to say, (large) being size rather than pot loads of cash :beer

The point I was trying to make is that everyone has thier own viewpoint on costs. ie: I have no problem about paying for an upgrade from cattle class :P but I would never pay for a very expensive hotel :nod my choice

If you remember you asked " my question is, it worth paying the extra £380?"

IMHO YES but other people may think NO

It is up yo you B)

I have flown with CI on many occasions in Economy class & twice I have used my airmiles to upgrade to Dynasty class . I would never pay the extra for Dynasty because IMHO it's not worth it .

Other benefits of Dynasty are that you are allowed to board before the economy hoards start to pile on. At AMS, whilst economy are being boarded, you are being served wine/champagne/ beer and canapés prior to take off.

In theory you are allowed to board first but on both occasions in Amsterdam due to unclear boarding calls all the economy & dynasty passengers queued up together & I had to push my way through them so that I could get my 'priority' boarding .

I was offered a drink once I got to my seat but the only 'canape' was a bag of mixed nuts , the same as you get in economy .

The '5 course meal' is the same tasteless crap you get in economy only they serve it on nicer plates , 1 course at a time instead of it all being jammed onto one tray .

I'm not too tall so the extra legroom isn't an issue with me & I found the dynasty seats to be not much better than economy seats in terms of comfort .

The only things that are an advantage is the use of the Lounge in Schipol & the better in-flight entertainment . But £380 would buy you a lot of beer & snacks , even at airport prices & you can buy a portable DVD player for £100 .

If you do decide to try Business class book it through Gordon in Gazelle travel . He will pre-book your seat ( try & get one in the upstairs section ) & credit your airmiles for you . Even if you go economy you can still book your seat - even the wing exit seats !
