Best airline that i have ever flown.

 

Used to fly 12-15 times a year SFO HKG, and about half the time they would upgrade me, sometimes to First! I never paid more than $600 for a round trip ticket...

 

Their lounge was also great, and none of the Birds were below a 8. On United, all of the Birds needed a walking Stick.

I second billrussell (loved you when you played for the Celtics). Cathay Pacific was the best airline I have ever flown. The fact that the plane was 50% empty might have had something to do with it. They fly 3 times a day from LA to HK, and during the off-season (which is now) the planes are rarely full. In both directions I had a row all to myself.

Don't fly Cathay as they're worthless. I need them to get desperate and offer the 45K FF miles special to LOS like they did a few years ago. Up until this past year I thought they were the best airline that I had flown. Then I flew Singapore and had to drop Cathay to number 2.

Last weekend I almost converted a bunch off AA miles to NWA miles via the crappy exchange rate through hilton honors (I desperately need 9,500 NWA miles to get to 120,000 and book two tickets for LOS).

 

The only thing that stopped me was if that special might return.

 

Anyone have some NWA miles lying around they don't plan to use?

I know I wouldn't convert those AA miles. I would fly the little lady on the NWA freebie and pay for mine. That way you would earn enough NW miles to put your total over 60K. If your hard up for baht then I would suggest you forgo those Bruno meals and eat pad thai and som tom.

 

Last month I received an email from the AAdvantage credit card offering 15K miles and no fee for the first year. I didn't need the miles but my account has been dormant for awhile and I didn't want them to expire while I'm trying to wait out the Cathay special so I signed up, this will give me 4 more years.

 

Had some good luck on my return from LOS last month. While waiting for my short flight from SFO to Sac, United's earlier flight to Sac had mechanical problems so they were looking for volunteers on our flight to place some paxs. when they offered a $600 flight voucher I was the first one to volunteer. The next available flight was 8 hours away so me and 3 other volunteer decided to rent a vehicle and drive the 90 miles. My share was $25 and since I didn't use my return ticket I will be getting a refund. We got to the airport about an hour and half after the plane had arrived. Sweet

That's a great story of taking advantage of getting bumped - I remember a family friend had a similar one in Florida where he just rented a car and drove across aligator alley after getting cash.

 

The problem is that the FF tickets that have opened up to date (twice out of about 30-40 calls) via the NWA reservation line were either via Korean (more expensive also than NWA) or even better, the quicker eastern route (I think 17.5 hours flight time) via Air France which would be much more expensive. We would even have a 12-hour layover in Paris to do some exploring and meet some CESMs . I want to have my 120K miles ready if something like that opens up again and then be done with NWA for good.

I'm about to book a flight to BKK from JFK on Cathay Pacific. This is my first time flying CP from JFK to BKK. I'm taking the CP flight that goes from JFK-Vancouver-HK-BKK. My question is, on the JFK-Vancouver-HK leg, does anyone know the row numbers for the bulk head seats ? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Are you referring to their All Asia Pass? If so, it was reduced from 30 days to 21 days about 3 years ago while at the same time they increased the cost a couple hundred bucks. That program allowed you to fly to about 19 destinations within Asia for 19 days once you arrived in Hong Kong. All your flights reguired you to fly in and out of Hong Kong. Also you didn't earn any American Airline FF miles, don't know about other FF programs. To get the cheapest rate for this flight you had to join Cathay's Cyber Travelers program, no cost to join.

I know United has this feature and Cathay is constantly rated as one of the top airline in the industry so I would think they also offer this feature. What is even better is the emergency exit row seats, as soon you get to the airport ask them if if those seats are available as you can't book those seats in advance.

The All Asia pass is a good deal if you plan to fly to more than one destination. I used it to fly to Manila and then Bangkok. To figure out if it is a good deal, you have to add in the airport taxes for each flight to the cost of the ticket.

Hello Hub, I have a few NW miles that I probably won't have much use for. I was traveling a lot on business until this past year, mostly on AA, but NW comped me mid-tier status when it looked like I might be flying to Alaska quite a bit. Alas, I only flew there twice. I've since stopped traveling for business and am slowly watching my status and AA comps disappear. NW is dropping me from Gold to Base! I didn't realize they would drop me down so fast, since AA drops you one tier at a time.

I just got my ticket to Thailand from San Francisco. It was $781 total. They will give me Asia miles but no AA miles. In the past when I bought the Cathay cyber special they would not credit my flight miles.

I am will be going late march. Will the new airport be open or is it delayed again?

It will probably be close to the end of the year before it is in regular commercial use.

Cathy Pacific is a great airline and their service is 2nd to none but their coach seats are very tight. I use to use them to fly from JFK to HKK and then on to BKK but this time I am going to use the Thai Airways direct flight from JFK to BKK. It looks like the coach seats have a bit more room plus I will save about 4 hours travel time and arrive at 4 pm rather than around 11 pm.

 

The Thai Airways flight is a little more expensive but may be worth it.

I agree with Jballstate. CP is a wonderful airline if you are in Biz class or better. The economy seats are built for Asians and are tight, both in their 747's and newer Airbuses. I opt for Thai Air direct flights to/from JFK/BKK as the seats are better and the flight shorter.

OK! I'm Asian American so I fit in the economy seats better tne most people. But I do like my elbow room just like the next guy. I usually ask for an isle seat back in the section (think it's around roll 66 to 68 A-C or 65 to 67 H-K) that have only two seats instead of three on the outside rolls. This gives me a little bit more room and usually I'm the only one in those seats so I get both seats to my self. I'd love to be able to ride in Business or First class but I'd rather spend it on the girls in Bangkok and Pattaya. I book one of these Cathay Pacific deals and will be visiting again in about a month from now.
