If you go to the motorcyle showrooms they always have a selection of 2nd hand part-exchanges. But IMHO your better off buying a new one for the 10000 extra at least you know it hasn't been wrapped around a lampost and repaired.

Many places have used motorcycles for sale. Often very good ones can be found. Many Thai's sell their bikes when they need money. You can get a good 100cc bike for around 15k-20k baht. I would not hesitate to purchase a used bike. Although, I always buy a new one every 2 years. I usually get top price for mine when I sell them. The 125cc I have now is 2 years old now and has less than 5k Km on it. I would part with it for the right price.

Looked at a brand new Honda Wave on the weekend - several models from maual to auto. Prices were 38000-42000B. This included onroad tacx and insurance. They we re even happy to do some mods for that price too.

Remember if you are buying it for you, you'll need permission from immigration. You can buy it in her name but if you split, you lose your bike. If yor buying it for her sone, the best to put it in her name.

A 50cc honda moped is more of a better call then, I have seen them in some repair shops for sale in Issan, its a good small bike with an automatic transmission...............maybe just get him a chakrayan (bicycle)??

Yes, get a small little bike. Not sure what brand, but they got a little gas engine right near the rear wheel. Looks like a little chainsaw motor. Have seen used ones for 6,000 baht. Top speed maybe 50-60Kmph. Not much of a loss when he slams into the rear of a car.

From the date on the post, he was offering to sell it over 4 years ago.

He got banned, reborn, sent to purgatory and off to China he went too. My how time flies.

Please don't buy a used bike or a new bike. Or even rent one. You will live longer! There have been many threads here about the dangers of biking in Pattaya. And they are all true.

I live upcountry out in the boonies. The main dangers here are cattle, chickens, dogs and kids. I still ride once in a while up here. The motorbike we now have is a 125 Suzuki Best. She sold a 100 Honda wave when she got the Suzuki. She got 25,000 baht for it. It wasn't worth 25,000 baht but it was a 1,000 down and 1,000 a month. The buyer didn't get the book until it was paid off. The kid never missed a payment.

BahtSold and Udonmap normally have a LOT of small motorcycles for sale by farangs. You can sort the available ones by region. Just make sure you make sure the book is legal and whoever you buy it from goes with you to the motor vehicle department. Don't pay until the book is legally transferred to you or your wife.

I made a BIG mistake a couple days ago. A friend of mine bought a new Honda PCX and I made the mistake of riding it. It is just the bike that bigger farangs need. Automatic, smooth running and a comfortable seat. Actually quite peppy for a 125. I don't see how I can do without one just like it. A little pricey at 70,000 baht but there is not another motorbike in its class.

I know it's an old post, I know it's the Thai way, and I know I will get flamed, but I seriously question the rationale of buying a 13 year old a motorbike of any kind. It is probably one of the best ways of not making it to 14.

What did I read recently, 11,000 deaths on Thai roads, most on motorbikes. Sorry, if I had a 13 year old son/stepson, or anyone I cared about, I would not let them on, near, or even to say the word motorbike.

Microman, my thoughts exactly. I shake with trepidation when I walk past the local school and see all the 12 and 13 yr olds riding three up with no helmets, licence. The cops even hold up the traffic while they ride out.

If they were not allowed to use the bikes, they would not be going to school. :bj2

I'd been thinking about buying a PCX. It's the first small bike I've seen that just somehow looks like it would be fun. Several of my neighbors parked theirs with my rented 2 yr old Yamaha Nuovo. Incidentally, it was about time to buy a bike, since I've been renting constantly for ... 6 YEARS (at 3000/month)!

I was talking to a friend about the bike, and he mentioned that the bike parking area that I use (and probably the other ones in the area), wouldn't accept a PCX for parking...they think it's a big bike :bj2

I took a picture of one and showed it to my parking attendant, and I asked if I could park one there. He confirmed that they would not accept a PCX.

I doubt it would ever be a problem up country, but around here, parking is at a premium, even for bikes.

MM the PCX is accepted all over mate, its well known and takes up 2 or 3 " more than a Nuova.

I am sure if you grease his palm :gulp

"If they were not allowed to use the bikes, they would not be going to school. "

Not sure that I follow your thinking on this one.! This is an urban school, most of the pupils live very close by and could easily walk or ride a bicycle. Alternatively, their parents could take them on the motorbike. Why on earth do they have to ride a motorbike illegally. I bet most of us here walked or rode bikes to school, are thai children so spoiled ?

To make matters worse, if these children run into you while you are driving your car or motorbike you can guarantee it will all be your fault and you will have to pay up big for compensation.

Sometimes that extra 2 or 3 inches makes a difference.
