Best deal from LA to BK?

Recommended Posts

My buddy flies out of L.A. and usually takes Eva ... I believe that may be China Air so I don't know if there's any price difference. <huh

Just ONE day in Thailand is justification enough for travel expenses ... anything over that is a bonus! <grin

Seriously, I'd plan on at least a couple weeks. It also depends on what you want to do there ... travel the country or stay in one place. Be forewarned though, if you make plans beforehand, expect them to go in the toilet once you get there!

Don't say I didn't warn you! Have fun.

China Air and Eva stop over in Taiwan, a great chance to take a shower, get cleaned up so when you hit BKK or Pattaya, you just have to throw your bags into the room, and hit the Soi's.

Just pack a throw away towel, single use soap, razor and tooth brush (if you aren't British), change of clothes, into your carry on, and follow the Intl Shower Sign. Very clean, private cubicles. Then when done, throw the wet stuff away, and head over to the gate for departure. As long as the layover is more than an hour, should be plenty of time to get cleaned up.

I like EVA air - They are a lot better than JAL or China Air.

When I commute from Hawaii to Bangkok, the best thing about them is they leave at Midnight, rather than in the late morning, which gets you into Bangkok around noon, not midnight.

Also when you depart, they leave about 13:00 rather than 08:00 or so, which give you a good night sleep.

The other thing I look for is a short connection. I have seen flights with 12 hour layover times - Bummer...

British people would have no need of flying via Taiwan to BKK.

As you have no need of cutlery in what you laughingly call restaurants.

It is also less of a problem to have poor teeth when you have been taught to chew with your mouth closed. :chogdee2

Also, what's the minimum length suggested to justify the travel costs?

Shortest trip I've done is 7 nights and I fly out of Philly. I usually stay two to three weeks. It takes me two days to get over jet lag. Length of time is a tough question to answer. My wife and I flew Philly to Sydney, Australia for a long weekend. :clap1

Thanks. Does anyone know the maximum length for a layover? Eg, stay in Tokyo for a week then goto Thailand then back to LA. I'm guessing it's not possible correct?

Also, there is the Thai Air, TG 795 from LAX (non-stop) to BKK on the A340-500 departing Monday, Thursday and Saturday I believe.

It is about 17 hours over and about 14.5 hours back.

Long layover is no problem. Airline reservations can sort that out for you.

That sounds like a good idea, although it seems strange that you wouldn't be able to rent a bath towel for the shower. I guess bringing a throw away towel isn't too tough though.

Midlifecrisis:

Look into Eva Air's Evergreen Deluxe Class ( evaair.com ). Seats are alittle wider and more leg room. Some seating is 2-4-2, but up in front it is 2 on one side and 2 on the other.

Approx $300 more than Econo for the RT from SFO to BKK. My flight in late Oct is $1053 - all in, bought the tickets last Feb - on-line. Last I checked, same dates the cost is now $ 1111 - all in.

Third trip, all on Eva and see no reason to change airlines. No problems. Flight leaves at 1:30 am and arrives in BKK at 11:05 am the next day. Stop in Tapei for about 2 1/2 hours. Leaves BKK at 16:55 arriving in SFO around 7pm, missing the rush hour traffic for my 2 hr drive to Stockton.

Small world. I was in Stockton last week. Took the bar exam in Sac and a friend lives in Stockton.

Another question, are these flights usually full or are they sometimes half capacity?

The rule used to be your connection within 4 hours of your arrival, or the the next available flight out to your destination, otherwise it is considered a stopover.

I have taken advantage of this rule many times flying to the Orient. I would book my flight SFO-TPE with a stop in hong Kong using Cathy Pacific. The flight arrived in Hong Kong after the last flight to Taipei left Hong Kong, so they would put me up in a Hotel for the night, gratis.
