I'm thinking of booking my next trip via Hong Kong. With luck I will have 4-5 weeks to travel.

My thoughts are to spend a few days in Hong Kong, Macau, and mainland China.

Bangkok Air flies direct into Koh Samui, but, it is rather pricey at around US$260 one way.

The only flights I could find from HKG to BKK are over US$500 round trip. Is there a cheaper option?

Travelocity, and Orbitz won't book flights starting in HKG. The only site I found so far is Expedia.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Salifast,

I have been researching the same topic, I have a flight booked at Christmas from Australia to BKK return using my flyer miles and thought I might do a little side trip to Hong Kong once I arrive at BKK.

The return flight to Hong Kong with Thai or any major airline is going to be well over $550au which is far too expensive. I have found Airasia fly between BKK and Macau, they are very cheap compared to the major airlines, around the $200au return if not cheaper depending on flight times. They do only book 8 months in advance so I have to wait a bit before I can get a price but going by there web site the above prices seem to be constant all year round.

From Macau it is an easy boat trip to Hong Kong which for me is worth while to save well over $300au, pays for my accomodastion whilst in Hong Kong anyway.

This about the only advice I can recommend, hope it helps.

It will be tough to find a cheap fare from BKK-HKG. Thai air has managed to get a strong position. There ysed to be many airlines flying the route including united and american. Both had to drop the route becuase of a threat to deny them gates at bkk if they kept flying the route. So now the only airlines flying are those that will not compete.

Yes, Air Asia through Macau is the way to go, as cheap as $100US RT/all in to BKK.

You can take a ferry directly from the HKG airport to the mainland and Macau without ever going through HK customs (return as well), saves space on your passport and gets you in & out much quicker. Depending on your flight, you may also be able to get a boarding pass and check your luggage before you even get on the ferry on return to HKG. There are also ferries from the mainland to Macau, there's really no need to use the land routes - believe me they suck.

Here is the ferry schedule to/from HKG: Skypier

This is the CKS ferry schedule serving the mainland/Macau/HK: CKS

Once you are in China, the train is the way to go: Train Schedules

Enjoy your trip.

They fly nothing but newish A320's, kinda like Southwest with 737's, only one plane makes their maintenance very cheap. They also don't issue seats (all leather), but no probs, I've never seen a full Air Asia plane.

Just head to the front of the line and head straight for the exit rows (12 & 13, I believe) for extra leg room.

They tend to be a few minutes late leaving from time to time, but for 90% savings I'll get there 15 minutes late.

Thanks again Pico. I'll give them a try.

:D flew about 10 times with air asia inter thailand routes this trip cheap and cheerfull, no seats allocated but never been all that bothered on short haul, anything you want to eat or drink you have to buy but no probs there, quite often a wee bit late and usually have to be bussed in at bkk airport, all in all well worth flying with them for the savings involved :D
