Yup, I snapped up that deal.

Too good to pass up.

Both my September and November trip are bagged at $815.20 each including the taxes.

Red eye out of LAX to BKK with arrival late morning.

1 1/2 hr layover in HKG in September and 3 hrs in November.

Cathay Pacific is still one of the best carriers out there, even in restricted economy.

Good price. And good until June 31 too! Hope their onboard navigation system is better than their calendar.

Good deal on Cathay Pacific... the airline I fly to Asia on the most! I'll most likely book a flight for Sept/Oct sometime in the up coming week or so. It comes out to be $830.57 from SFO... about what I paid when I went to Thailand this past Feb. 2007. :banghead

I used to love Cathay when I could afford the biz class seats, because I just can't sit in economy like a sardine for 16 plus hours. Now they are asking outrageous prices on biz, unless they send over their planes with the premium economy seats.

I was notified of that deal by email and after looking at the term and conditions gave it a pass because you can't earn AA miles, only Air Asia. If you looking at price you have to take into account the FF programs and I believe that UA has one of the best. In 2005 I made 6 trips at an average cost of $600. In 2006 I made another 6 trips at an average cost of $400 and after 4 trips this year I'm averaging about $350 and that with the BKK departure tax now included in the ticket price.

I booked that flight as well. Cathay is great. Don't sweat the FF miles as much as I used to as I have 140K on NWA that I cant seem to get redeemed.

Travelling with my wife with sharing two seats seems to free up room.

Sure, it's a good deal if you live on the coast, but for those of us who live in the heartland, getting a ticket out to the coast makes this too costly. EVA, my carrier of choice, is hooked up with American Airlines and prices their flights with the flight to the coast included, and is the better choice for me.

That said, I did fly Cathay on one LOS trip and it was a very nice experience. Rgds, Jimmy

Since you are buying 4 flights per year and getting double miles on United it works for you, Emil.

I tried United again in May and frankly I just can't stomach the US carriers on long hauls anymore. If I am making 4-5 flights per year and earning enough miles to upgrade I can tolerate them...usually.

Since I'm only making three flights this year with one month stays I'll pay a little more to fly on an airline where I enjoy the experience. It's worth it to me.

Cathay Pacific also has a better flight schedule that fits my personal needs, i.e. I can fly out of MSP on Thursday or Friday evening and catch the redeye out and arrive in late morning. The return flights also fit well with my work schedule since I can return on Sunday late morning from BKK and arrive back home at a reasonable hour for Monday morning. United transpacific schedules always depart mornings MSP and arrive at midnight in BKK, with return flights at 6 am out of Bangkok. I always arrive exhausted in BKK since I find it hard to sleep on the flight over in the daytime. When departing late morning I usually get some sleep the night before so I feel a lot better upon arrival than I do if I leave Patters at 2:30 am for a 6 am flight out.

Steve,

United's schedule is your problem. You need 50k paid miles in a year to get the 100% mileage bonus but only 25k to get the 25% bonus. You would then qualify for the Economy Plus section of coach which provides 5" of additional legroom. The last 2 years they ran promotions in the fall where everyone got double miles so I got triple and hope they offer that again this year. You can earn miles from many partners, if you get a credit card they'll give you 20k miles and an additional 5k for each friend you refer up to 3 a year and no annual fee the first year. If your not aware United and American recently reduded their non activity period from 36 months to 18 so don't let your current UA miles expire. When you get to 60K for a freebie call them up and ask to fly on Singapore as their schedule out of San Francisco is similiar to Cathay's.

BTW I'm only buying 3 flights a year and getting 3 free.
