OK, simple question

I can get a double-entry tourist visa in the U.S. This will allow me 6 months in LOS. But then what do I do? Is it possible to get another tourist visa from a neighboring country? Or will I have to live somewhere else for 3 months?

I understand that Penang is now issuing non im O visas good for one year. As long as you have a visa, tourist or non im you will be able to stay as long as you like. What you can't do is stay longer that 3 out of 6 months with NO visa. A visa on arrival that is free and good for 30 days is NOT a visa. Try to get a non im visa before you come or a tourist visa is better than nothing.

Hmmm, that would suggest they are issuing Multiple Non Imm O visas. I haven't heard this elsewhere and am a little surprised. (Ooops, just took a look at Thai Visa forum and you are correct, someone over there hinted prices for the visas are going up early July, and Penang might be more strict in the future) For sure Penang is where the visa run people go to get the tourist visas....and even then, only single entry. You could go back to the US to get another double-entry visa.

A friend of mine was able to get a tourist visa in Vientiane, Laos. Another went back to the UK and got a non im multi entry from Hull. He said he was in and out in fifteen minutes.

Vienjun, Laos to me is the cheapest for getting an actual tourist visa

apply before noon the first day and return after 1pm the following day to get your passport back

Where did your friend come from, Gary?

For UK board members, the Consulate in Hull is very user friendly. I got my multiple entry non-Immigrant O visa there before I retired here 2 years ago.

He's a Brit. I have no idea if any other nationalities can get the Non im that easily.

I think that as a non-British passport holder you have to have legal residency in UK to be issued a Thai visa.
