Hi all, I've just returned today from LOS to UK.

I usually opt for KLM from Norwich thru Amsterdam and onto BKK, as I am a FB Elite member etc etc

But on this occasion I decided on KLM to AMS then China Airlines to BKK due to price, about £150 cheaper this time.

On my return I a had 35kg suitcase!!!

I am so used to my extra luggage allowance, with KLM, I didnt give it a second thought about the excess baggage, they dont normally bother if i'm slightly over and to be honest I thought I had 28kg tops!

The very kind check in girl advised me I was 15kg over an it was gonna cost me 15 x 1355 baht (a whopping 20,0325 baht).

After some negotiations in both English and my limited Thai she agreed to waive 5 kg, as the Belgian guy I had met in the queue and had checked in with, only had 19kg with no hand luggage, and he said i was carrying some bits and pieces for him (even though we had different destinations!) this still left me with a 13,550 baht bill.

Now, in hindsight, I know I should've crammed my hand luggage a bit more and brought home a bit less, but I am sure I remember there is another way of doing this, ie a company that you can pay at the airport for excess baggage.

I might be way off mark here, but I remember a similar incident with a friend of a friend a few years back and I'm sure he said this was a cheaper way of paying.

You help and input on this will be appreciated.

Be careful with stuffing your hand luggage with China Airlines.

On an earlier trip this year they weighed my hand luggage, granted I only travel with hand luggage. It weighed in @ 10 Kilo (7 kilo is the allowance) they made me check it into the hold. I took out my i-pod, travel documents and jumper for return to UK, then managed to get a free bag through in duty free to place the items in.

I am a Gold card frequent flyer with China, it really pissed me off. Then the next breath she offers me a free upgrade to business class, a well TIT i suppose.

Regards

I've never had a problem with luggage on China Air (Taiwan), check through or carry-on. EVA, on the other hand, has weighed my carry-on on two occasions.

Times are achanging ...

Last year I couldn't even take my pool cue as handluggage even after first having passed all the check-ins without problem ... at the actual boarding they took it away from me : 'deadly weapon' ! :D

Why didn't they know that at the first check-in , where I asked that specifically ??

Also last year I brought sister and brother-in-law to the airport , and came back with about 1/4 of their luggage : they were travelling with a 10 yr old and 2 yr old child and assumed that counted for full luggage allowance (30 kg each person) ... no way ! Either they had to pay a ridiculous extra sum or leave it ... they left it ...
