I stayed there in July 2006.

I found the staff very friendly towards me and my guests.

The gym is so basic its not worth a mention.

The food is quite good and well presented. There is an open air bar just at the entrance to the hotel and I spent many an enjoyable hour there waiting for my very vain friend to get ready.

The rooms are reasonable but I would suggest getting one with a pool view. I did not and had the problem of people in rooms facing me looking in on my activities (and vice versa).

One of the pools was continually closed for cleaning and other such things but the other one was well maintained and not too crowded.

The hotel is situated approx equadistant from sois 7/8 and Walking Street, also within spitting distance (not that I would) of Mulphys establishment and other such wonders. So its in a good location (IMHO).

Overall I could recommend the hotel.

stayed areca lodge april this year, it was that good im back again on 17th november.. great place to base yourself for your stay. :D

Depends... If this is your first trip and you're not sure or don't care about costs, this is a great place to stay! Right i the middle of a great soi, close to everything, and pretty much "upclass" by comparison. Allin all good value for the convenience. If you're only using the room to shag than there are many other hotels (right next door) that are a better value for the money. Want a pool? Areca. Want Breakfast? Areca. Want a nice, clean room without either for 1/2 the price and right next door? Metro Apartments.

Just comes down to how much you use the room. All I use the room for is shagging, so I don't care too much any more about "extras". Up to you.

I walked by the ass end of the Areca about 2 weeks ago on soi 14 or is it 15. Anyway they had cleared the area directly behind Areca and looks like either the Areca is expanding or another hotel is going to be built. If so, then you might have some construction noise to deal with on your stay.

they are building a third accomodation building on fair side of swimming pool, but there didn`t seem to be any construction noise to worry about when i was there, this hotel books out easy especially in weekends, so you better book well in advance

I stayd there july 2006, I found it a bit oldish. The pool area is great, but there are better hotels for this price in this town.

I have stayed here a few times, it is one of my favortites, I have booked for part of my stay again in January. I do always book a room with a pool view as I like to sit on the balcony sometimes, the rear building facing the new pool is a better building imho.

The hotel has everything I'm looking for, eg great pool areas, safes in room and girl friendly. Not having in room internet is a let down though.

I really like the area, soi diana is close to everything for me.

As erik_e says, it is getting a little "old" in the rooms, maybe they will redo the rooms once the third lock is completed, but the rooms are still nice enough to make the place enjoyable.

Any opinions on better hotels for similar money and similar amenities erik_e would be appreciated?

Thanks in advance.

The punters must be abusing this place as it opened around 2003, the back wing was then completed a year latter.

Sounds like you will be right in the middle of the action. Last May, i did n't know that areca would be this good and hence stayed at a diff hotel. I,sure, have areca on my mind for the next trip. IMO, the rate is good for a nice hotel, with breakfast included. Whereever we choose to stay,we just need a girl-friendly hotel because we dont go to LOS for the temples. Do we? :banghead

Just confirm if the areca is still totally girl-friendly.Have heard that they are now catering mainly for the family oriented tourists.

Just make sure your girl has ID when you take her back here. There was this chap called Nintiwirri and he met this young lady called Joy at Cherry bar.......................... :banghead

He means there's a joiner fee for EXTRA guests - above the 1 TG you bring to your room.

In other words, you bring 2 TGs to your room for a threesome, you have a 300 baht surcharge for the "extra" girl.

Every time I've tried to make res there they are full.

Me and a couple of mates are staying there from 4th November and had difficulty getting reservations direct with Areca Lodge.

However one of my mates has stayed there before and fancied it again, so not to be defeated we tried via sawadee.com and managed to get three rooms for the same period at a cheaper rate than quoted by the hotel itself, result. :finger

Assuming of course that when we get there we don't find it double booked.

I stayed at Areca lodge last time I was in Ptty. They told my friend that they were full too.

But I'd saved my confirmation email from "Dear" - from the prior visit. So I wrote her (by replying) a persional email saying how I knew that it was always busy, but could she find me a good room. PLEASE.

No probs. Confirmation from Dear via another email within 18 hours.

Save confirmation emails from hotels you stay at and try and get a name of some sort (nickname or real name). If you like the place, don't book via the website...use their email addresses and use their names in the salutations of your email.

Good advice. I've used this method in the past, always with great success.

Areca is wonderfuily situated as our estate agent friends might say and has that tropical hotel meets beverly hlls smaller scale frontal look which outclasses all locally bar the versace overkill of LK Metropole. It's clean spacious, a tad conserbative, nice pools, good rooms, smart ladies and posh-ish and staying there you feel a way cut above the Sawasdee and local room options in the 800-1000 a night levels , but you are paying for that with a room rate in the 1700s in December. I have stayed here several times and loved it an used the mini gym, never ate breakfast but enjoyed the hotel and it makes a good impression on BG.

Location location location and Areca has it all, soi Buakhow, vibrant area, LK Metro, 1 mins walk from Lolitas BJ bar, next door to huge pool hall, Papagayo night club which gives Secrets a run for its money, arcades, Oasis a Go Go and Champagne, and a wonderful area... so fast to 2nd Road... worth it if you are not on ultra tight budget

I agree with the poster who said if you want these items go for it... otherwise cheap room or budget Sawsdee hotel. I tend to vary on trips according to mood and how many island hops im gonna be doing. I may be there some time this december or near as this area buzzes for me...

and Lolita's opens at 11am so ideal for wake up BJ or even second wake up BJ if your last night gem has left

PS: in 2006 I was taking combos of 2 and 3 girls back there and no one ever asked for joiners but that may have changed recently..

NOV 2007 update

here is the latest ARECA Lodge tiered seasonal price info for high season I got today by email

The price is from 08/12 - 15/12 @1,350Baht

16/12 - 23/12 @1,690Baht

24/12 - 29/12 @1,990Baht

equates to rate of Bht 1726 a night for the 21 day stay above

**if you are two free of charge but if three charge 300Baht per person ( extra person joiner IS being applied over 1 guest - I specifically asked about this having heard rumours)

That's exactly what I used to do, also would ask for the same room I had on the last trip and for the same rate.
