no advance seat selection at this price.

Several years ago I flew China Air without seat reservations. I regretted it. Had a horrible seat in the center of the plane.

Other than that they were not a bad airline.

I know what you mean, but that price might make some think, "hey all the seats land at the same time". A little (really a LITTLE) discomfort for quite a bit of money back.

I've always done okay with China, although I haven't flown them for several years. Within Asia they are quick, no-nonsense efficient, on time, etc. Overseas trips can be a bit uncomfortable, they tend towards the, er, budget-saving seat sizes.

I have flown all of the 3 big Asian carriers out of LAX.

EVA.....Taipai...BKK

China....Taipai...BKK

Cathay Pacific...Hong Kong...BKK

Seems to me a 747 is a 747..big and bulky on the takeoff...3 rows outside.....4 rows inside....coach class.

Some have "seatback monitors" and some don't.

One or the other may have a slightly larger seat pitch agreed, and that helps as I am not a short guy.

If one can cop an aisle seat, I just put one leg down the aisle and hope the food cart does not smash a toe.

My shoulders stick out beyond the seat back and invariably, the attendants bump into me....jolting me out of la-la land.

However....now and again, the cute girls rub my leg in passing!!!!

Xanax works GREAT!!

I have zero loyality to any of them, as they all feed you, get you to where your going on time normally and the attendants are all cute Asian girls.

Price is what is of paramount importance to me.

China, time after time, usually has the lowest price of these big 3.

I can't seem to fathom the reason why they do not allow you to choose your seat in advance.....can't think of any advantage to that at all other than to make you notch up the fare.

However, if you do notch up the fare, then one can make the seat selection in advance at an attractive price also.

Maybe $100 USD more.... for advance seat selection might make it worth it.....for some.

I will arrive early for check-in and plead for an aisle seat!!!

They had a similar promotion earlier in the year, I paid $651 all in. I was able to do the online checkin 24 hours before the flight and choose my seats at that time, otherwise I would have been first in line a few hours before the flight.

The only problem for me flyingat that time, was that I finally got into Pattaya sometime between 4 and 5 am. I had the worst case ever of jet lag both in LOS and back home after my return, so much that I will never fly those hours again. 3 of the first 4 nights in LOS I never made it out of the hotel.

I fly UA out of Philly to BKK. I'm a premier executive in their ff program. I pay for two and the third one is free. I always get exit row and when I fly the SFO leg I usually get upgraded to first class. When I fly international I get to use the Red Carpet Club.

The reason I mention all of the above. It may pay you to stick with one airline.

I have looked at China before but from what I remember the total travel time is something like 27 hours. Pay the little extra and you can make the trip in about 19 or 20 hours.

Actually I just looked and the China schedule is one of the shortest I have seen (other than Thai's nonstop)

LAX - BKK 19 hrs (1hr layover in Taipei)

BKK - LAX 15 hrs (1hr layover in Taipei)

The problem is that for the lowest price ($570) the flight gets in at 1 am. Add in immigration, getting your bag, and a 1.5 hr taxi ride, and you are in Pattaya after 3 am (not for me - I hate trying to check into hotels then). Paying $90 RT more gets you a flight that leaves the USA around midnight and gets into BKK before noon, at around the same travel time but a couple of hours longer layover. This extra fee is well worth it and has my "internal clock" working well. Plenty of time to get situated in your hotel and hit the scene on the first night!

Just purchased my ticket yesterday....EVA air......$646.00 + tax = $725.00 for a three month open return ticket! not a bad deal....Here I come!

I always fly EVA now and EVA Deluxe class with a window seat and a power port on a 777 makes that 12.5 hours out of SFO go by a hell of a lot smoother. Xanax would be a nice nightcap for sure. If you're stuck for 12+ hours with 300+ new 'friends', make the best of it and pray you're deodorant doesn't fail you. EVA Deluxe Class.... $1018 total EDC on all four segments in a 61 cabin. I'm sooo there! :D

  • 3 weeks later...

Unfortunately I'll be flying Air China for the 3rd Time at xmas. EVA would actually have been $100+ cheaper, but their available dates weren't as good and this way gives me 2 or 3 days extra.

I fly out of SFO and the flight times aren't bad, it's about 21 hours including the layover, maybe 22. It's the planes that suck. they don't have seat back video screens, and the seat just feel too old and broken in. I'm only 5'7", i don't know how a big guy could do it! the second leg TPE to BKK the planes are much better. that said, they do get you there and on time, and xanax or valium is a must! I just tried to pick my seat, but it said i have to do it 90 days or less before the flight.
