Olympics gold medal mens hockey game

Recommended Posts

Supposed to start at 0315 on Monday.

Sunday afternoon in Vancouver according to the website.

I accidentally started to watch the women's final. Those girls can flat play hockey!! I would not be surprised to see a female in the NHL, I was very impressed. I think the US takes the men's gold, though. Canada has the usual problem - too many good players makes a great All-Star team and a lousy team-team. The Russians had a GREAT team, went out in the quarter finals (to the US at that). As I write, the US still have to beat the Slovaks, but I think that will happen and the US-Canada replay sure would be great for ratings in both countries.

" I would not be surprised to see a female in the NHL"

I would, and not only that I would be surprised if they lasted the first period.

The girls have skills but they do not check and the NHL is the biggest checking league in the world.

I used to play a little in my thinner and younger days and whilst I was probably one of the worst players in the British Ice Hockey leagues no girls here could have lasted against even the guys who I played with.At the moment we are having this very argument in the ENL2(English National League) where there are currently 4 or 5 women playing of which 2 are goalies. They have their own league but expect to play in the mens league because they think themselves too good to play in the girls league which is to be honest pretty poor. They may be the best women in the country but they struggle in the lowest mens league and our standard is much much lower than the NHL.

Have you seen North American women's hockey at all?

A female goalie has already played big-time hockey. More PR than anything, but she played a couple of years in the division below the NHL.

I just came back to correct my post above. It is CANADA who have to get past the Slovaks in the next few hours, which they should, and go on to face the US in a very anticipated final. Sorry for the mistyping.

As the question seems to be answered already it is perhaps permissible to extend the 'Women in men's sports' theme that's arisen. Are the advantages always with the men? I played Sue Devoy at squash when she was ladies world champion. I won the first game and she slaughtered me in the next 3......Her superior fitness and skill increasingly took over and the game reached it's not unexpected conclusion............ But I was ranked low in my club's top 20.......... I believed then that If I could get a game off her, any of the top five at my club could have beaten her. I'll point out that my club wasn't even in the first division of the county league.

However, today I wonder just how high Serena and Venus would rise in the men's Tennis? How far the world's best women would go in any sport even something like Pool/Snooker?

Thank Ghawd that women and men are built differently.

Every so often a woman comes along that can beat most men at a "neutral" sport like golf, tennis. There's no physiological reason a woman couldn't be world snooker champ, although none of them is. I can't imagine a woman playing tennis with the men, but I can imagine a golfer. A team sport is different again, where the coach/manager can fit the whole team to the situation. I imagine a woman hockey player would be in a limited role (and certainly not a "role player" haha). A woman baseball player would almost certainly be most dependable on defence. A woman non-goalie soccer pro would probably have one incredible skill, like a Beckham cross or something of that sort.

But women are much more into physical development and women's sports now encourage girls to skills development. No woman will every outrun the fastest male runner (in our lifetimes) but there are things a woman CAN do to make sports unisex -- remains to be seen if they will. There's a huge mental barrier (sports' glass ceiling) waiting for them all.

Just one other point, a lot of people who saw her said that Babe Zaharias could play several sports at the male level. She was well ahead of her time of course.

A woman in the NHL !!! :allright  :P

I used to get embarrassed on the footie pitch by an old girlfriend, along with every other guy in the neighborhood. She turned out to be pretty good though...

And THAT is how every final Olympic event should go! Great game, GREAT competition, last second goal to send it to overtime. Brilliant. I'll be watching this one a few more times in coming months. Canada gets the goal (and thus the gold) in its own arena, and congrats to both teams for a terrific game.

Where do you get some of your ideas? 1luv A woman could never play in the NHL. It is too fast, too skilled and the players are too strong. The "professional" women are no better than Pee Wee division boys.

I got mine watching the actual women's Olympic final. I already said that.

Where did you get yours?

I will stipulate: If you think the Olympic final was Pee Wees, you never have watched top-grade women's hockey OR Pee Wee hockey either one. The alternative is that you just made up that stuff up ^^^ there to be argumentative because you can't make an actual, you know, point to back up your alleged belief. And that said, I *am* impressed (actually) that you know how to spell Pee Wee.

More than 35 years playing, coaching and watching hockey...nuff said...I have watched the best women live at the 1998 Olympics in Nagano where the US won the gold. Very boring and like I said, like Pee Wee division boys.

I have watched top grade women's hockey and whilst they have skills that look good when watched in isolation (no men)They do indeed look good. When you have some experience of the men's game they do not look so good. There is one Canadian woman (so I am told) who Plays in the Finnish premier league but the European game is a lot less of a checking game and not anywhere near as high a standard as the NHL or the AHL.

My experience is that of a Fan, player, Bench coach, off ice official, father of a player who became a Ref best mates with another Ref who just happens to be the father of one of the 5 top female officials in the world who was in both the last Olympics and this and who Reffed the last world final 2 years ago.So whilst I am not in any way saying I know everything, on this I do have valid and extensive Knowledge to back up "MY OPINION".

PS I don't think it is Pee Wee standard ,more Junior A,but even then the guys would check the girls out of the game.

"Pee Wee" the first time was kind of amusing, but now that you insist that it's serious, it's just stupid. Top-grade women's hockey is to Pee Wee as Thai Airways is to walking from London. I assumed you were being silly first time for the sake of emphasis and literary licence and all. Now I assume something very different.

It's 2010 now, kid, but stick around a bit, get some more experience by all means. You got an opinion, so do I. For the next 10, 15 years, that's all they will be. Except for the excruciatingly stupid "Pee Wee" part, that is. And the 35 years. A youngster!

Sports are changing, the women are actually getting better faster than men, the PC mob is at work, hockey "violence" is being toned down.... events will conspire and come together, I'm very sure of it. But around 2025 or so, maybe you'll be right except for the Pee Wee part, and I could be wrong. Who can tell? I always prefer to let things happen chronologically and I strongly, frantically believe your predictions of the future are as worthless as mine.

But you keep stamping your foot and insisting you're right. Maybe you are, even though you can't think up a reason. Lord knows you don't have to be knowledgeable to jump on a winning bandwagon.

It's only informed opinion from both posters personal perspectives.......... You'll go round in circles.

I suppose it begs the question if ladies are good enough they will be already represented in men's ice hockey,'soccer' basketball, football, rugby or even boxing. That they aren't means that they are not, currently strong or good enough,or that they are discriminated against,or that the pool of women playing in such sports is a shallow one..........That argument could be used to explain why in a neutral sports like snooker or darts that they haven't risen to men's competitive levels.

However the 'pool' in women's 'Wiff-Waff', sorry table-tennis is enormous, particularly in Asian countries so.........

In chess women regularly compete against men at the highest levels. The Polgar sisters from Hungary were coached from birth and scored high 'men's chess ratings and acquitted themselves well in tournaments but never got through the best of the best.

............Still as they say.....'Ginger Rodgers could do everything that Fred could do.............But backwards and in high heels!!'

"Sports are changing, the women are actually getting better faster than men"...Really :allright ? Take a look at world speed skating records:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_speed_skating_records

Women's records are between 9-12% slower than the men (for skating and running). Add several pounds of hockey equipment and the difference will be higher.

Yes I remember seeing a graph some years back that seemed to predict women matching and then overtaking men in the longer tack and marathon events. It hasn't happened yet............. Maybe the performance drugs and testosterone athletes of both sexes take make it difficult to assess the 'reality' of the situation........Throw in high altitude training blood transfusions 'et all' and I wonder why I watch.

Tell you something......... about a year ago a young bloke, one of the pumped up, steroid enhanced, (by his own admission) muscle men in the condominium block where I live, got into an arm wrestling competition with a stringy Norwegian. Amidst the gritting of teeth and grunts of exertion came a loud, sickening 'snap'...... The brittle bones in 'Arnold's' arm had snapped in 2 places.

Back on track.

I don't see any reason, given a fair and level playing field why women can't compete..............Other than that they don't!

Dave. Really. Seriously, if you believe hockey and speed skating have anything at all in common, you'd be better watching this silly argument than trying to participate. For starters: Hockey players don't skate fast, they skate quick. In team sports, players have roles - in hockey they do not all gather at the goal line and skate as fast as they can to the other goal line to determine the game's winner.

Women hockey players HAVE IMPROVED faster than the men in recent years. That's all I said. And to be even clearer, I don't think that women in general will overtake men in general in ANY physical activity, ever, without massive changes in breeding. But to me, the idea of one or three women being the equal of men in the physical sport of hockey is entirely possible. Women are in the military infantry in many places today, for example. Women are police, women are firefighters. Some of THOSE women are more than equal to the men or elements they battle. Women play high school and some university sports - they kick field goals in football for example. Not every hockey player fights, you know. And not every one of them skates really, really fast, either.

It's a tortoise-and-the-hare graph, and it's a sham. Women in general will not run the marathon faster than men in general. Many women will beat many men, of course, hell any marathon runner of any of the five genders can beat me. But parity in this type of sport won't happen.

I don't get why women want to play hockey. I mean, we don't give a fuck about playing ringette. 1luv

The women look ok against other women but they would not give a top Junior A team any trouble.

And while on topic, it was nice to see us beat the Yanks for the gold but they deserve credit, they didn't quit (although their tying goal was scored by Parise whose parents are Canadian).
