MSE is installed, working fine and doesnt seem to slow the system like AVG did.

Thanks for the recommendation.

I'd never steer an Aussie sideways.

If you still feel compelled to pay,Eset Nod 32 is the best for money a/v software-small footprint and haven't felt my system slowed at all (very subjective I know).

I used Norton Internet Security free trial for 90 days then subscribed for a year. The NEW Norton is a VERY good product, fast and uses very few resources. I had no problems at all and if not for trying the free MSE and firewall, would have happily bought Norton again. Those people who insist the Norton is a resource hog have NOT done their homework. The older packages were slow and used a lot of resources. Because of that, they lost thousands of customers. Norton was totally rebuilt and they did a great job. It installs fast and you will never even know it is on your system except for the little icon that shows you are protected.

If I ever BUY another AV package it will be Norton Internet Security. Norton Internet Security is a total protection package and not to be confused with just AV or older Norton products. I must give credit where credit is due and Norton deserves a lot of credit.

It's almost a cult. It's a very good program indeed, however, and well designed and does not impact any decent Windows system.

jacko, I don't think anyone can tell you what "will happen" on your specific PC. Most people using AVG have no problem whatsoever. Some just go bonkers.

.

Well since I have no facilities here in LOS to reload it the 'suck it and see' option doesn't apply.

I don't want to reload it especially with a crappy windows copy..

I think I saw a warning pop up from AVG about having to load ver 9.0 'or else'.... so I may not get the choice.

I'll be watching this thread.

When AVG upgrades a major number, then it stops supporting updates (signatures and the like) for the previous freeware versions, so yes, pretty soon (if not now) you'll have to go to 9.0 or cank AVG.

I got very disappointed in AVG a couple of years ago. I think it's important to trust what you've got, so I got rid of it. Right now, I'm very happy with a combination of the MSE that Microsoft gives me, and the software my parents gave me. Between the two of them, I've had no problem with nasties.

Further to this... I bit the bullet and Upgraded to AVG Free 9.0 on the GFs XP driven Laptop.

I did it per the instructions and everything looks good.... although quite a few restarts were required.

Avast has been better than AVG for the last couple of years. Give it a shot.
Acccept your info and recommendation, but last time I offloaded virus protection I seemed to get a lot of complications. (That was getting Norton off after Joe panned it!)

It is an old lappy and I don't worry about it too much.

Nortons a pisser almost like a Virus in itself and leaves traces all over your machine.

The easiest way to de-install it is to never install the overpriced piece of shit in the first place.

I am inclined to agree. Interesting though the feedback I get from people who are satisfied with it. In my opinion, they can't be very knowledgeable.
