Back in April I bought an HTC Nexus One (from Google). Last week, I dropped the phone for the first time, and the screen cracked. Having dropped a few phones over the years, I was surprised to not get at least one "free" drop without damage.

I then did a google search on "Nexus One screen cracked" and found pages of hits. There's even a youtube video showing just how delicate the screen is.

The HTC Desire has the same screen. You might want to read this set of posts before you make your decision.

Now, all the Iphone users I know tell me they have dropped their Iphones lots of times, and not one has had a screen crack.

I've ordered a screen replacement kit (2400baht) and will be trying that shortly. I also bought a jelly plastic protective wrap for the phone, so maybe next time I drop it, it will survive.

I need to start the Pattaya chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Talkers for your benefit.Or Drunk Texters."Hi,I'm Martin and I'm a Drunk HTC User".

I got my 1st smartphone (free) last week after adding a line for my sister and extending my contract for a year. It's a Blackberry Bold 9700 and I'm satisfied with it.The cost for the best HTC was $200 so I deferred.I will upgrade to the best HTC next year and as soon as other carriers get access to iPhones,I will change to that.I see 2-3 year wait for that.

apparently in the rest of the World outside North America it is 4G, but AT&T don't want to be pressured into developing a 4G network so it's called i-Phone 4 in North America where AT&T wants to keep it's 4G capability quiet

http://hubpages.com/hub/The-NEW-iPhone-4G-Coming-2010

meanwhile HTC's EVO is offering 4G on Sprint & Sprint is already developing a 4G network

so basically, it sucks to be you if you're paying for a 4G phone in North America & can't use the capability because of AT&T

Please see my lenghty posts 2 weeks ago about iPhone 4 and also 4G network.

I know its a concept, why would you post a concept phone and call it iPhone 4?

because the photo said iPhone 4G & I couldn't tell the difference looking at it until you mentioned it, then I zoomed to see "concept"

& probably because I'm really focused on the HTC, but I am reading HTC Desire does not have a secondary camera which would make video calls damn near impossible unless you were using a hands-free (small talk)

Please see my lenghty posts 2 weeks ago about iPhone 4 and also 4G network.

ok, I'll see if I can dig it up in a little while, thanks

Video calls mate? forget it, they're shit IMO, I've had 3G phones with forward facing cameras since they came out, not for me, or to be frank, anyone I've met, I wouldn't even put the forward camera into the equation. You, may feel different though.

I did video calls when I was in Bahng Saan, Chonburi. Northing wrong with it really, worked fine

not to mention, how do you take pictures of yourself w/o a secondary camera ?, LOL

I used the video call function a couple of times just to show someone where I was, worked pretty good

the real reason for 3G though to me was for internet use

I agree with Bigleg, video calls on a smartphone are just a novelty IMO. My Omnia had a front camera for video calls but once I tried it I realized that it wasn't for me. I guess that's the reason that the iPhone 3GS nor the HD2 even have a front camera but all of the other functions like Email, Facebook, the browser are the main reasons for having one.

I'd rather use it for video calls than facebook

can't get you get on facebook on any browser ?

the 3Gs i-Phone will be able to upgrade to iOS4 when the new i-Phone 4 comes out

& I'm also reading lately that HTC Nexus One hardware will support the OS from their Desire

it's pretty similar from what I've seen the price on N1 is about 5k less

þ

at the present time these are the totals :

HTC Android

I did consider that the i-Phone 3Gs prices should drop when i-Phone 4 comes out, & then you could upgrade a 3Gs to iOS4 making it multi-task capable

Similar with the Nexus One, apparently you can load a custom version of the HTC Desire Android 2.1 onto a N1 & it will do basically everything the Desire can do.

Well sort of true, when the iPhone 4G comes out you will be able to upgrade the 3GS but the reason that Apple has limited the 3GS to no multi-tasking is because it just doesn't have the processor horsepower, the 4G will have a 1 MHz processor the same as the Desire and resolution that is similar. The two biggest advantages of the 4G over the 3GS are the processor speed and the screen resolution which really just catches it up to the HTC phones.

You also asked about the Facebook apps and similar. While you can do all of them in your browser, it is so much easier if you have an app specifically tailored for the task. All of the phones, including HTC and Apple have Facebook, Twitter, music player, email, photo viewer, etc. apps as a standard feature and they all work much better than trying to do it on your phone with your browser although you are correct, it can be done, it's just much easier with an app. Things like reading the Bangkok Post or the NY Times are much easier on their app than with your browser.

If I lived in the UK I would definitely go with the Desire or the 4G, since I live in Pattaya I'm going to get the 4G as soon as it is available unlocked and I will probably trade my HD2 in on an Evo since I think that Windows is a dying phone platform, Skype doesn't even support it any more :allright .

yeah, you're right about those apps. I never really bothered much on my Nokia, just used the Opera browser

the only app I used specific was gMail

here's what Apple says about the iOS4 upgrades :

http://www.apple.com/iphone/softwareupdate

"iOS 4 works with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 3G. Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking is available only with iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS."

I guess we'll find out when it is finally available, pretty soon

Well Apple certainly have the fools sussed.

I think there has been about 6 new iCons in the last 2 years

as soon as the new ones are out the fools are clamouring for it.

I loaded a few new Java apps on my Nokia over the weekend & now consider buying some stereo headphones to listen to tunes or watch videos etc

One of my GIKs took my original Nokia hands-free headphones, damnit

BUMP - I looked at an HTC HD2 and have changed my mind about buying another smart phone. It is a Winmo phone but can now also use Android. The thing has a huge 4.3 inch capacitive screen and I can read it without glasses. The landscape on screen keyboard is large enough to use without glasses too.

The main reason I am buying this phone is that I am taking a trip to the US and can have the phone shipped to my brother in the US. I have to take a laptop from a US friend and deliver it to his brother here in Thailand. Two laptops in my carry on bag would be hard to explain to customs and I don't trust putting a laptop in my check in luggage. WiFi is easily available where I will be and checking email and my stock prices will be the main use for the phone. I NEED a big screen and this phone has it. It still easily fits in my pants pocket.

An iPhone is out of the question because of the stupid proprietary Apple way of doing business besides the screen being too small.

I'll first try the Winmo and if I don't like it, I can change to the Android OS. Actually for no more than I want to use the phone for, I think Winmo will be fine.

Win Mobile is shit I have had enough of it and have switched to Android on the Samsung Galaxy S...... And boy am I glad I did none of those annoying Windows Beeps when it can't perform a task. No more restarting when it crashes.

Yep Microsoft transferred all our favourite flaws to our mobiles just to remind us how a company with slick marketing can offer shit and still make loads of money...

Apple have done the same with the iCon... The iCon 4 is NOT a 4G capable phone....... They could have put this functionality in seeing as 4G is being rolled out in USA imminently and UK next year but why would they do that when the sheep will buy another 40 million handsets in 6 months time.

There have been about 5 incarnations of the icon one of my sad sheep mates in the UK has bought all of them.

So Apple is the new Microsoft ..... They have the ability to make loads of money with substandard/incomplete products. While Google quietly and efficiently develop their OS alongside companies like Samsung and HTC.

A quick snippet from Samsungs site on the Galaxy S

Receiving a good reception

Samsung Electronics remains committed to designing safe, reliable and attractive mobile phones that meet our strict design and industry-leading quality standards. Based on years of experience of designing high-quality phones, Samsung mobile phones employ an internal antenna design technology that optimises reception quality for any type of hand grip

mmmmmmm are they getting at a certain fruit named phone manufacturer??? :whistling:

I don't have the HTC HD2 yet but from reading the reviews, HTC has customized many of the WinMo controls and WinMo haters say that it is now usable.

I got the Iphone4 a two weeks ago. It was an impulse buy. There was about 10 months remaining on my ATT contract and I was holding out to consider a switch to another carrier and another phone (I'd had an Iphone since the first one came out). I had an hour to kill between work and a teeth cleaning so I popped into an ATT store to have a look, knowing full well that they are still impossible to find without pre ordering one. Well it was just my luck that the salesman mentions they have one in stock for sale. You know the rest of the story.

Without a case, yes, if I hold it "wrong" it will drop calls. How it made it through testing with this problem is laughable. They dropped the ball for sure. The screen is smaller than the HTC and that is a negative for me. Here is the real kicker, for those who don't know, it takes a MICRO SIM CARD. Not a big deal for some, but I have a couple of phones, one that I travel with that is unlocked and a ChineseNokiaNockoff that works well and takes two sim cards, great for travel. So if I want to carry another phone with my US number I have buy an after market adapter or go back to the ATT store and get another sim card. SUPPOSEDLY I can do this anytime I want without being charged. We shall see...

Those are the only three negatives that I can find about the phone. Everything seems to live up to promises and often, IMHO, exceed expectations.

Yeah I'm with you on the Samsung Galaxy S, I've had mine for a few weeks now and I'm most impressed. The screen is amazing, Android seems to be the OS of the moment and I feel it will only get better.

My Iphone loving son i law is insanely jealous. Anyone wanting a decent "Smartphone" should do themselves a favour and at least check it out,

Ive had the EVO for 2 months now and love it. Four co-workers now have after playing with mine. It runs on android 2.2 and has so many free apps. Sound quality is good, huge screen and the voice to text is really nice. The one negative is, the phone can drain your battery if you're not careful.

Not a problem for me the Galaxy S has a great battery life I get 2 days use it's always checking for emails I play games on it too. So impressed with it, my old Omnia had a shocking battery life barely got 6 hours use always had to carry a spare with me.

Bump - I found a guy who had a Windows 6.5 phone. I bought it for a very good price. It is an LG GM250 that came from the UK. It had a UK charger which isn't a big deal. It also won't recognize Thai language which doesn't bother me either. It is a touch screen and it has a 3 inch screen which isn't big enough. The phone will do everything an iPhone 4 will do. It took me a lot of time to get it set up. Maybe that's why most people hate Windows phones. I'm talking many hours to figure it out. I think the guy who had it couldn't figure out how to use it. Nothing was set up and most options didn't work. Now everything works properly including the GPS.

The verdict is that I will still use my cheap phone for everyday use. This touch screen phone does eliminate having to carry around my rather large and heavy laptop while traveling. It does work great with WiFi and with the screen rotated it is great for email. I can use email without my reading glasses.

I still recommend a net book and a dedicated GPS for serious travelers. It's true that the phone will do everything but bigger is much better. For the same money, you can get a dedicated GPS and a decent net book. All the gadgets available are clever but they are just toys and are of no real practical use.

Hows the battery life ? Windows phones usually suck them dry.

Wait until you start hearing that familiar Beep when you try to do something Windows doesn't like.

Android is by far the much better option.

My WinMo phone has been operating for a week w/o needing a recharge. Given it's only been on standby except for getting a voicemail & couple of missed calls.

The Android groupies are almost as bad as the Apple groupies IMHO.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S and I think is simply great compared to my brothers Icon 4.

The I con 4 does not have a radio and you have to pay to download many items.

Flash will not be available on the apple phone. ... waiting for the froyo update on my samsung.

You can put a 32 GB sd card in the galaxy. ... can you put extra memory in a I phone?.

The screen resolution is to die for on the galaxy compared to a htc desire.

You can watch HD porn movies on the galaxy in the toilet if you want to chuck wa.

Right now i dont think there is a better alround phone than the Samsung Galaxy S.
