5-year licence expired

I’m currently in the UK arriving on the 5th May and won’t head back to my home in Thailand until the end of August.

 

My 5-year Thai motorbike licence expires on my birthday which is on the 3rd July meaning I'll have to take myself along to the licensing centre in Pattaya for renewal.

 

Any info or suggestions on renewing a licence which will have expired 2-months after its due date and what I need to take with me.

Will they issue me with another 5-year motorbike licence or drop me back to 1-year?

 

My retirement visa also expires in July but I intend applying to Hull for an ‘O’ visa ahead of my return.

I’m happy to let my visa expire as it’s due at the wrong time of year which is in early July with me making annual trips back to the UK for the past three years and holding out until one month ahead of the renewal date which to me was unsuitable.

 

This time through the Hull Thai consulars office I’ll obtain a visa with a renewal date more suited to my annual trip back to the UK.

Normally two months is not a problem unless you get the clerk who's on the rag and just in from a fight with her husband.

I've spent many years USUALLY avoiding her, but not always. I think it's... Daeng? Could be Noi, something like that, can't recall exactly. About 40, black hair, 5-foot-2, not smiling and unfortunately - sometimes the only one at the counter.

but I remember on a other forum someone

who only get again a "1 year temporary" license

because he was to late to renew his "5 years" license...

 

Normally you should wait that your "1 year" expires to get a "5 years",

but you must renew your "5 years" the month before it expires...

My 5 year is also up in october but this time I will be on a 30 day visa free entry. does anyone know if I can renew it ? I presume I have to get a letter from immigration in Jomtien and I do have a permanent address here but will immigration want to see a 60 day tourist visa or a multiple o visa before they give me the letter of residence??

Yes you will need...

Documents needed for renewal of Thai driving license:

1. Passport + 1 signed copy of each - (a) 'face' page, ( non-immigration visa page, © current TM6 card & latest entry stamp page.

2. Photos are no longer required as they use digital photo images engraved on a hard 'credit-card' style permit. Ladies - please note that you must have your shoulders covered for official photos.

3. Letter of 'Fit-to-drive' from Doctor - 200 baht (must be less than 30 days old).

4. 1 residence certificate from Pattaya Immigration (dated within 30 days of renewal).

5. Money 665 (500+55) baht for car - 365 baht for motor-cycle.

6. Your old Thai driving license(s).

(A 'TM6 card' refers to the Immigration Departure card attached to your passport during your stay in Thailand. It has a reference number (TM6) that tells where & when you entered Thailand)

(The letter of 'Fit-to-drive' from a Doctor is again required)

Biggles, You must have a long stay visa non O Retirement or B 1 year Visa to get a new 5 year licence

The D.M.V. will want the residence letter from Immigration and a photocopy of your VISA.

 

 

Nam tip.. There will be no problem renewing you 5 year as you can prove that you were out of the country. But YOU can renew up to 3 months before expiry date so you could have done it anytime after the 5th of February.

From what I read before, you will not get a new "5 years license" if you don't have a non-immigrant visa.

You probably only will get again a "temporary 1 year license"...

Thanks for that information skippy_nl, had i known i could go for a renewal a full three months ahead of the due date i would have done so.

It just goes to show that after 14 years of living in thailand i'm still learning.

thanks guys, I thought this would be the case. I wont bother renewing it, too much hassle, I can use an International driving permit for upto 90 days and I dont intend to stay more than 30 days in thailand anymore.
