Best not to be in Pattaya IMHO.

I'd take Chiang Rai over Pattaya for Loy Kratong any day.

Same here, although self/sex obsessed buffoons will tell you 'there's nothing to do' in Chiang Rai/Mai. :banghead Most of them need their little Pattaya security blankets...awww bless...widdy woo. :whistling:

Mae Jo (20k north of Chiang Mai) is worth a visit.

I remember a few years ago going to the beach with a mate of mine and his future wife to float the kratong. He was dressed in the official Thai white (marriage) suit that he had hired for 4000 baht (was getting married that week as well) Went down to the beach and his future wife told him to take his sock and shoes off and pray to Buddha while walking in the water to float the thing. He replied no way am I praying or am I getting wet to which the “wife replied” thats no good bad luck will fall on you and you will have a bad life. My friend just laughed and said rubbish.

Gods honest truth 1 minute later as we were walking off the beach and his wife in a “huff” someone lite a rocket which completely misfired hit him in the back catching his suit on fire.

Whats the saying “when in Rome” his wife is still 100% sure today that if he had prayed it would have never happened.

I've never found the traffic to be too bad, although alot depends on what day it falls. This year its on a Sunday so probably some out of town Thais could be in town. I've celebrated this holiday in Pattaya since 2001 except last year when it fell early in Nov and I didn't arrive until 2 days later.

A good place to lauch is the pier, also at the pond on the grounds of the temple on Pattaya Tai.

I believe her Tony because if he would have spent the time doing the Buddha thing he wouldn't have been in the location where the rocket hit him.

I will be in Pattaya for Loi krathong for the first time, where is a good place to be? (21st November) will be with girlfriend

In my opinion Jomtien is a better place and better beach for the festival; fewer people than Pattaya beach (but still many) and easier to get around through the sand to release your own fire lantern with your lady. Be certain to have your camera with you as you will wish to take many pictures that include local ladies and families in full festival costumes, both with and without you and your lady. Further, restaurants with outdoor seating and beach views are better and more conducive to the overall experience.

I'm not superstitious or anything but in a situation like this I would respect the lady's beliefs and just do as she said just to make her happy. After all, you are taking part in one of their ceremonies so you have to do what is expected, if you don't, what's the point of you taking part. She probably felt bad as a result that you didn't take her advice and sufferred a mishap. If you had done as she had requested and the inevitable still happenned then she wouldn't feel so bad.

Also remember that if you have a "special" girl, you can hire a costume at a number of places in pattaya to make her stand out from the crowd. they really love this and you will be rewarded later!!!

I have never been "stupititious" :angel myself (I love neologisms!), but I agree that "When in Rome" is good advice for anywhere in the world. I respect anyone else's right to believe what they wish, so long as it does not infringe upon those of myself or others. I had a great time at the Loi Krathong festival last year in Jomtien with a lovely lady I had BF'd from the FLB half a dozen times over the previous two weeks. She floated a krathong while I waited on the beach; this she did not mind as I had a freshly stitched wound on one foot from puncturing myself by stepping on some sharp rock under water. :cry4: She was pleased that I placed a coin in the krathong and lit the candle. :hairout . Later we sent up our own fire lantern, watching it arm in arm until it was almost a pinpoint to our eyes. A good time was had by all.
