Calling from the USA.

You can buy good Boss International cards in most any Asian grocery, and in the last few months there are a lot of new cards you can tell by the all-Thai writing on the front of the card. They're all fine..

But I were you, I'd sign up for something like Rebtel.com or Thaitel.com, a service with very low rates, no extra costs beyond the actual call.

Here's what I do.......I have Vonage phone service, costs $24.00 a month and you can call any number in Thailand including mobile numbers with unlimited talk time. It's been great for us, my wife calls her family several times a week and my kids call their grandparents two or three times. Her mom buys a phone card in Thailand for 500 baht and when she needs money all she has to do is call my wife and my wife calls her right back......hmm......maybe this isn't a very good idea after all! :clueless

I use this service and I used it while I was in Iraq also. It works pretty well most of the time. Just like most all services of this type they have technical problems every once in a while. The cost is 2.1 cents per minute most anywhere in the world. You just have to get online, create an account and it is pretty self explanatory. I call my girl twice a day and it doesn't cost me a lot each month. Here is the link: http://www.mobivox.com/

This may not help you but might be of value to someone else....

When I was last living back in the states (about 3 yrs ago) I used Time Warner bundled services for my cable/internet/phone.... they had a service that allowed "unlimited" calling overseas for a flat rate of $20 per month. Might be worth a call to their customer service line if you use them for your cable service.

I switched to vonage a year ago, unlimited for Wife to call LOS

great deal

foot note:

i have 2 lines in house

tested vonage on one for a few months

however, got lines crossed up, and my main line was the Vonage

absolutly no difference, sold me on the deal

(however i have a cable modem and local provider almost top tier speed 15 mbs)

saves me a ton on monthly wired service and a ton on long distance

I used Pingo.com which was 3.3 cents per minute. It also keeps decent phone records of your calls if you need them (such as to help give your TG a visa).

Now my TG is in USA using it to call her family and friends in LOS. She can talk for a long time and it doesn't cost me too much. I still have some control since it's prepaid and when the money I deposit is gone she is done talking and I won't get a surprise bill out of nowhere for $100 or more.
