I'm going over in a few weeks and will be stating a few months maybe longer. I want to bring cash as it seems to be the best way at the moment. I have an account with Bangkok bank. My problem is that I don't arrive in Thailand until Friday afternoon and the banks will be shut, what I would like to know if Bangkok bank microbank http://tiny.cc/2w420 accept large foreign cash deposits approx £15000.

I wouldn't robot-deposit a foreign cheque, even a smaller one. The good news is that no one else can do much of anything with it, either (such as cash it or usefully deposit it), so just do the normal lock-up you do for your stuff and it should be fine until Monday.

I don't know your circumstances, but would it be not the most convenient and safest way to go to your bank and have the money sent from your bank to your Bangkok Bank account by electronic transfer by filling out a simple form, instead of carrying cash on you? Then, once you get to Thailand it might be a good idea to go to your Bangkok Bank branch and request a Foreign Exchange transaction form, which states the purpose of the money transaction, holiday, retirement expenses, purchase of car, etc, to avoid any suspicion of money laundering.?

Stay overnight in BKK and deposit it at either the Siam Square or Emporium branches on Saturday morning.

Technically, you have to declare that cheque at most customs posts, including Thailand. It is a money instrument, more than $10,000.

I think the OP was talking about bringing cash into the country. You are right about the $ 10 000 limit. if you take more than $A 10K in cash or its equivalent out of Australia, you have to declare it on the departure card at the airport. People not doing so, will forfeit all monies if caught by the authorities. There have been quite a few instances reported by the media over the last few years.

If you are coming IN to Thailand with more than $20,000 (alone or in a family/similar group), you have to declare it.

Declaring this isn't a big deal, but it's a really big deal if you should declare and you don't and you're caught. Coming IN to Thailand, you never know if you'll be searched. I believe I'd declare, but as always up to you.

Getting back to the question. I would be interested in being able to deposit cash into a Thai account rather than leaving it in a hotel safe. Any comments on the easy way to open an accout and anything worth knowing please?

I am perplexed why you don't just do a 'Telex Transfer' directly into the Bangkok Bank account. For that amount, the better rate over cash, will more than cover the charges.

Also aren't there many banks open on a Saturday in LOS?

In Bangkok all of them. I'm not sure in Ban Nok, but I agree that a lot of them would be.

Hi,

From my experance banks open on Sundays as well, This is not U.K. where after 1400Hrs on a Fri. most shut till Monday.

The max. you can transfer from a U.K. bank, to LOS, without notice, and without giving reasons, is 200,000B in 24 hours. Just over 4,000GBPs at todays rate. This is by U.K. Debit Card. Anything higher your U.K. bank requires notice, plus reasons why you need the money. this way will take about 4 working days to get the cash. Found this out when i bought a house. Tried 4 different banks. At the same. Did this over 5 days as i think it is a cheek for the bank to ask me what i needed my own money for. Also get it changed to B in LOS. Better rate. When i finished work i got a check from the Goverment for nearly 20,000GBPs. when i wanted to put it into my account, been using the bank for 20 years, they ask me why i got this. I told them none of their bussness, it was from the Gov. and if they would not take it i would start using another bank.

By the way I did this when i did not have a LOS bank account. I have one now with the bank i changed my money with.

As doolish said sending over this much is a pain, so many questions take time of work to go in and see them which is not convenient at the moment as I am building an extension at the minute and I am under pressure to have it finished before I go on holidays.

Utter bollox

Any UK banking establishment worth its salt can do the transfer on line just put 'Living Expenses' in the reasons box, fill it in (sending sterling) hit send and it'll be in your Thai bank account in 3 or 4 days *. Cost £15/£20 per squirt seems about par and is small price I'd say to take away all your cash carrying hassles.

Otherwise as stated be mindful of the 10K euros out of UK and $20K USD into Thailand limits (over which youre supposed to declare and really start answering 'so many questions').

(*I did just that for a £20K GBP transfer a few weeks ago prior to departing for LOS... not a problem - never is)

Depends which bank you use mate, I had no such limitation using an offshore one (Jersey).... there was a limit but higher than what you quoted, also 'discovered when I bought a house. I regularly transfer 5k but use a telex transfer. Tap the keys in the afternoon and see the beer tokens in LOS next morning.

Yes, any UK high street bank can transfer any sum to Thailand in 24 hours. There are no restrictions. However, for large sums they will want you to actually go into the branch, to check that it is really you giving the order. All banks have restrictions on the amounts that can be sent using online banking, phone banking, debit cards etc., for perfectly obvious reasons. You will need to give a reason for the transfer and "holiday" is fine unless it is a very large sum in which case just put house or car purchase, or indeed emigration if that is the case.

Unless you happen to have very large sums of cash lying around that you dont want to put into your home bank (which presumably means you are trying to launder it) then you are far better off doing a transfer to your Thai bank. You will get a much better rate than you would for cash, you wont lose the money in a taxi or mugging, you wont fall foul of the customs controls in both the point of origin and Thailand.

Personally I would rather not tell some unknown person in an airport that I am carrying a lot of cash and that alone seems a good reason to transfer it instead.

Make sure when you transfer that the Thai bank does the exchange. If a UK bank sends Baht you will get a dismal rate.

Unless the amounts you're referring to are way outside the OP's £15K GBP then this clearly isn't the case (I personally regularly do larger transfers than this using using exclusively only on-line banking..never a personal appearance)

The exact maximum amount for online transfers varies from bank to bank but it is normally in the region of 5000GBP - 20000GBP. My main bank sets it at 10000GBP per day. I could make one such transfer every day, of course. One of the ex-building society banks has an extremely low limit of just 1000GBP. Yours obviously has higher limits.

With some banks once you have set up a particular destination for transfers and had it verified by your bank then you can transfer as much as you like via online banking. Mine is not one of these and I am not complaining. I know of no UK bank that would allow very large transfers via a debit card (which is what at least one poster was trying to do) without pre-authorisation, and quite right too! It would be far too easy to falsify.
