ATM Cards in Pattaya ATM - Do They Require a Chip?

Recommended Posts

We have these chip and PIN cards here and credit cards as well. My two ATM cards and one of two VISA cards have no chips. Are the chips required? We have been slower than Europe in the whole chipping business.

Another way to ask. Are you using ATM cards with no chip without hassle now?

My Wells Fargo ATM, which works just fine all over the U.S., works equally as well in Thailand.

Yes, I am not worried about the bank , does the Wells Fargo card have a chip or no chip?

I've not seen a place that requires the chip, and there are few if any that utilise it, it seems. The card companies keep threatening on it, but so far, no.

Thanks Joe. The machines are just becoming more common here with PIN , credit cards as well. And Europe it is the rule and I did not know if Thailand was closer to us or closer to Europe.

If you have a card with a chip and you insert it and it doesn't work they won't swipe it. They just tell you card no good and use another card. My husband has been through 2 chip cards here and he just got a new as we will Thailand next month. Thailand was using the pin before North Queensland.

My local cards have chips, they are slotted into a reader, but no PIN is required for purchases, simply a signature.

PIN is required for cash advances.

Same question as for Aussiechic are these credit cards e.g. visa and mastercard or debit cards where you are taking from your bank account? Sounds like credit cards.

My main question is about using my ATM/ debit cards neither having a chip since the ATM cash machines here don't require them.

It sounds like ATM cards with a stripe only and no chip work OK in Pattaya.

Yes, I mentioned my Thai credit cards above.

But my Bangkok Bank ATM, and another overseas ATM card I regularly use do NOT have chips, so presumably work simply on the magnetic strip.

Thanks Jacko the bank is giving me a chip card anyway as my ATM card is rather banana shaped after years in the wallet and the other bank doesn't put names on ATM cards at all so they just gave me a new one in a minute todsy.
