Displayed prices are for multiple nights. Check the site for price per night. I see hostels starting at 200b/day and hotels from 500b/day on agoda.

I will be arriving in Patts Friday night and am trying to decide how I want to handle calling back to the United States. In the past I have always used Skype which works OK but there is usually a lag in the voice. I am wondering what the rates are to call the US from a Thai cell phone.

If I was to buy a cheap phone in Thailand what kind of prices am I looking at for calling the US?

Is there a specific carrier with the best prices?

If the prices are good where should I go in Patts to get a good deal on the phone?

Thanks for the help guys!

To just pick up and dial, about 5 to 7 baht a minute. If you are around for a bit, you can set up deals with LD firms for about 2 baht - the setup takes a bit of time, like maybe an hour, on the Internet. Or you can work a deal where the person in the US calls you (back), which is the cheapest.

I have used Skype from the shittiest internet locations in the world and voice without video is satisfactory. Get a number and have someone call the phone with Skype or a LD reseller. From here it is cheaper to call Thaliand than my daughter in Vancouver 2 cents vs. 2.9 cents.

Amazing, I have tried to use it from Thailand to UK landline and it has frequently been useless.

What is a "p" and what does it have to do with calling from Thailand to the US?

Back to the OP: In general, it doesn't matter what carrier you use. When you dial, do NOT dial 001 to get out which is expensive, dial 005, 006, 007, 008 - they all are about the same price, one or more of them work with any given carrier.

Any decent mall (especially Tukcom of course) has gazillions of cheap (used) cellphones, certainly under 1,000 baht, which is just about throwaway prices.

Last trip I got a nice Samsung for 670 baht at Carrefour, 200 baht 1-2-3 GO sim and I was good to go. Less than a thousand baht and you can discard it at the end of your trip.

When I talk to family or friends overseas, I use Yahoo or Hotmail Messenger from my laptop. I give family or friends a quick call on the mobile phone and tell them to get online. It is free and their is no time limit. Voice Mail is sometimes better than Video Call, depending on the connection speed. You can do the same in many Internet Cafes for 1 - 2 baht per minute.
