Sister-in-law back in Thailand has AIDS/TB and needs money for medication. I have a really painful tooth ache and need treatment here in the UK. Can’t afford both so who should lose out?

So what's the no brainer then? Waste of time, an answer like this. I would rather a don't know or a can't help.

As if the op wasn't???? Only you can decide if your toothache bothers you more than knowing your In-Law died of AIDS/TB.

Noone on this forum can answer that for you ...........Up-To-You

NHS dental treatment isn't expensive in the UK so I am not sure if this dilemma is real or imagined. A bog standard filling is likely to be less than £50 and if you can't afford £50 you would probably qualify for free treatment anyway.

Emergency and out-of-hours NHS dental care will cost you £16.50. You will not have to pay for emergency or out-of-hours care if you’re entitled to free NHS dental treatment.

NHS dental charges

The three NHS charge bands are as follows:

* Band 1: £16.50. This charge includes an examination, diagnosis and preventive advice. If necessary, it also includes X-rays, scale and polish and planning for further treatment.

* Band 2: £45.60. This charge includes all the necessary treatment covered by the £16.50 charge, plus additional treatment, such as fillings, root canal treatment or extractions.

* Band 3: £198. This charge includes all the necessary treatment that is covered by the £16.50 and £45.60 charges, plus more complex procedures, such as crowns, dentures and bridges.

Whether you need urgent treatment or just a check-up, if you're having difficulty finding an NHS dentist, you can call the dental access helpline for your local primary care trust (PCT). In addition you can also:

* Use the Find and choose services option on this site and do a postcode search for local dentists. You can also search for your local PCT to find the number of the dental access helpline.

* Text 'dentist' to 64746 or 'NHSGO' from your mobile phone. We’ll send you up to three text messages with the results that are nearest to your location from the area where you need a dentist. Learn more about NHS Choices mobile.

* Or call NHS Direct on 0845 4647.

Shortages of NHS dental care exist in some places but NHS services are growing steadily and there is a continued NHS commitment to improving access.

Independent patient survey figures published by the Department of Health in December 2010 show that, nationally, 59% of adults tried to get an NHS dental appointment in the last two years, and of these 93% were successful. The success rate was higher for shorter periods: 96% for 3 or 6 months; and 95% for 12 months.

I am lucky. Unlike the majority of the members on this board, i have still all of my own teeth. To see a good dentist every six month for a check-up and a clean and scale should be a priority. I have met quite a few bar girls with bead breath, thanks to their rotting teeth. Bar owners should insist that the girls should have a mammography, a dental check-up and visit a gynecologist at least once a year. :P

I would tell her to go to the hospital to check if she has aids or tb,big difference. Also they get treatment for 30 baht and free for hiv

That's your answer Sir.

All she has to do is go to the hospital in her Amphur. If they do not have the capability to treat her she will be refered to the provincial hospital. There she will get all the help she needs for less baht than a cafe latte.

This is the only answer.

Do you have dental insurance?

After reading the replies, I have to agree that this is a wind-up. It's always best to take care of yourself first, no matter what. If this is true life, then the SIL would have to fend for herself, but if it was the GF, well that is a bit of a different thing, at least for me. I understand the the gov't hospitals are either free for Thais, or very inexpensive, especially for HIV. Take what the OP said with a grain of salt and then throw it over your left shoulder.............LOL

The OP troll aside, AIDS and TB go together like a horse and saddle. AIDS is the usual "cause" of TB in Thailand, in fact. Of course, you really wouldn't know you had either/both unless they were diagnosed in the first place.

Yes, indeed, even a Thai sis-in-law without money WILL get treated for AIDS and/or TB. Not an imaginary one, of course, but all the real ones will.

This isn’t a wind-up. My wife has just sent £400.00 of our housekeeping out to Thailand a few days ago. I did read an article on the Thaivisa forum that treatment for AIDS/TB is free from the government hospitals. If this is the case then why is the money being sent? When I asked my wife why we have to send money, she explained that they need it for medication/treatment, rent, food and the repayments on the 3 year old pick-up WTF?? Gotta keep the pick-up at all costs it appears?

Alright then, take your next tilac for a check-up and listen to what the dentist will have to say. And I am not talking about the tooth whitening cream she used to get your attention either. Your tilac will require at least one root canal filling or worse. :banghead

Was this a wind up? http://www.pattayatalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=52486 If it wasn't, was it from first hand experience?

Geez, just about every Dentist in Pattaya will see you almost immediately.
