I am proposing the same successful format as last year for the RideHer Cup.

Selecting the matches

All players meet up at FLB on the Sunday evening around 9 pm. Ben will collect the money and explain the travel arrangements. Team shirts will also be issued by Ben. The captains will then select the pairings and list them in the order of play. I would suggest that the 2 captains tee off in the first group so that they can be at the eighteenth green to support their players in the following groups.

The matches

Each group will play 2 matches with a point available for each match.

The front nine will be played as foursomes. Both players in the team hit their drives and select which drive will be used. Thereafter, the players hit alternate shots. Over the 9 holes, a minimum of 4 drives must be used from each player. The handicap allowance will be 1/2 the combined handicap of the 2 players in the team. Strokes will be according to the stroke index of the hole. So, a team comprising an 18 and a 36 handicapper will receive 27 strokes and a team with a 14 and an 18 will receive 16 strokes. In this case, the first team will receive 11 strokes for 18 holes and will get the strokes on the 9 on holes with SI 1 to 11 inclusive. The holes will be played as straight match play and the match will be determined as a win (1 point) or a half (1/2 point) for the 9 holes.

The back nine will be played as fourball better ball. Each player in the teams plays every shot at the hole and the best net score for the hole wins that hole. The hancicaps for the fourballs will be full handicap allowance stroking off the lowest handicap player. So, in the above example, the 14 handicapper will play off scratch, his partner will get 3 strokes and the players in the other team will get 4 and 22 strokes respectively. Strokes will be allowed according to the SI off the holes on the back nine. The fourballs will also be match play with the lowest net winning the hole and the match determined as a win or a half.

There is a possibility that the SI's at Kao Kheow are set the same for both nines (because there are 27 holes at this course). If this is the case, I will set the SI for each of the 18 holes before you all tee off and mark these on your cards.

At the end of the round, each team should submit two cards signed by them and their opponents with the result of the foursomes and the fourballs on 2 separate cards. I will collect the cards and will score the matches in conjunction with the 2 captains. The overal result will remain a secret until the evening party.

There will be a longest drive and nearest the pin competition on the back nine. We will also have some other "fun" competitions running during the matches - these will be announced the previous evening.

Some of you have suggested some additions to the rules to sell mulligans etc. I would like to get your opinions on these suggestions. If the majority are in favour, we should do it! I like the idea of "buying" a mulligan on drives with the money going into a drinking fund or maybe to charity. Please let me know what you think.

I have explained the proposed rules in depth for the benefit of those players who do not normally play these formats. I am sure that the regular golfers will correct me if I have made any errors.

Your comments and suggestions are eagerly awaited! I'm really looking forward to the event - it will lift me out of the deep depression that I am suffering as a result of turning 50 today! Only cure is to get blind drunk and have a ball in Thailand!

All the best.

Sounds good to me!

Thanks for the work you put in Doggie

The term "mulligan" is really a contraction of the phrase "maul it again."

"Mulligan:  invented by an Irishman who wanted to hit one more twenty yard grounder."

Thanks Doggie for your excellent work. It sounds fine with me. I just hope that others than me will do the math. Buying mulligans is a great idea IMHO. If the money goes to a drinking fund or charity or 50/50 is fine with me.

Looking very much forward to the event.

And I will just whisper a happy birthday, Doggie.

Best wishes

Doggie,

Don't want to put too much of a dampener on the idea but would not allowing the purchase of mulligans put the result of the competition down to those with the biggest wallets?

In my case though it would be very handy although expensive 18 x ???b = ????b. ::) ::)  Still cheaper than the losses last year to that pair of burglars. :-[ :-[

Best wishes for your birthday M8. 50 ain't all that bad - just look upon it as being another year closer to the time when you will be able to spend 6, 9 or 12 months a year in LOS if it takes your fancy (and the missus allows). :o ;)

Steve O

Thanks for the birthday greetings - much appreciated. I am delaying any celebration till I hit Thailand.

I think that the mulligan purchase should be limited to 1 per 9 holes. Most of us will use that up on the first tee anyway! I will let the guys that suggested it in the first place propose some rules.

As you say, the cost is insignificant compared with the money we lost to Kenny and his partner last year!

See you in BKK.

Hi Doggie,

[glow=red,2,300]

MULLIGAN’S OR NOT?

[/glow]

Here is my two baht’s worth (which is declining) for a few possible ways to introduce Mulligan’s in to the 2003 RideHer Cup.

Revised from a previous post. . .

1) Be able to purchase up to 4 Mulligan’s before RideHer Cup play starts.

2) Be able to use 2 Mulligan’s per nine holes of play.

3) Cost per Mulligan at 100 baht each (or to be determined) with money going into the Mulligan Baht Pool.

4) 1 Mulligan from tee box ONLY and 1 Mulligan from ANYPLACE on course excluding the tee box.

5) No carryovers allowed.  If you don’t use your 2 Mulligan’s on the front nine you lose them on the back nine.

6) Opponents can use appropriate (tee box or anyplace) Mulligan’s to make opponents team member shoot his or her shot over again. Just a little twist if you think your opponent's shot was too good or was just a lucky one.

7) No Mulligan’s can be used against opponents or for themselves when any  prizes are being played for on the shot. (closest to the pin, shortest drive, longest drive, etc)

Some suggestions for dividing up the Mulligan Baht Pool could be:

A)  Two names drawn out of a hat, at random, during the FLB party afterwards for half of the Baht Pool money.  One winner for the front nine.  One winner for the back nine. (Must purchase 4 Mulligan’s before play starts to be in the Baht Pool drawing)

:o  Teams that place 3rd and 6th share equally in the Baht Pool? (prevents sandbagging)

C)  Closest to the Mulligan sign placed on the fairway or green.  One for front nine and one for back nine.

D)  Baht Pool money could be also be divided equally among the “FLB’s Party Baht Bus Lap Dancers” in the bus’s lower lounge. (If Ben can get them to go?)

It may be to difficult to keep track of this additional item in the RideHer Cup and the final decision should be up to doggie or whomever is involved in keeping track of all the stuff.

Good job [smiley=cheers.gif] "Doggie" [smiley=cheers.gif] and those involved on putting the rules together and getting the whole thing rolling.  It takes a lot of time and effort to put together an event like this and make it come off smoothly.

One request, Doggie, please make an attempt to keep your trousers on this year.  You’ve got an ugly butt to be showing off it off in public and I’m sure it will be very distracting  to Team USA.

Hope to see you all there in:

Hi ff29

Some good suggestions regarding the use of mulligans - I would like to hear the views of some of the other players on ff29's ideas.

Regarding the use of the proceeds, I would definitely go for option D!

Thanks for displaying my butt in public again. I will make sure that we capture some other poor bastard with his pants down this year. The same rule definitely stands - any player that fails to hit his drive past the ladies tee plays the next shot with his breeks (trousers to the rest of you) round his ankles.

Cheers

Doggie,

In answer to the question u posed I think ff29's ideas re mulligans are bloody good. On a first read I thought maybe a bit difficult to keep track of and confusion may reign but after a second read they are simple enough and the idea of.....

6) Opponents can use appropriate (tee box or anyplace) Mulligan’s to make opponents team member shoot his or her shot over again. Just a little twist if you think your opponent's shot was too good or was just a lucky one.

is brilliant. A lot of fun to be had with this one potentially. Imagine hitting a wedge to 6 inches (or holing a 30 foot putt), glowing inwardly for a few seconds before one of the opponents says "now if you wudn't just mind doing that again.........."

Cheers

Hi there

Had to read ff29's rules about mulligans twice --- thrice to be honest and I didn't quite get #6. But with Pieman's fine example I now understand it fully. It is on the brink of sadism. If I just once hit the ball perfect, only to hear :'could you do that again please', I will be devastated. However I admit that this rule will create some interesting situations to say the least. So I am in for the full package. And regarding the use of the proceeds, I too go for option D. Ander afterall we are there to have a funny day.

Best wishes

Just a slight addendum to my suggested "Mulligan Rule # 6":

6) Opponents can use appropriate (tee box or anyplace) Mulligan’s to make opponents team member shoot his or her shot over again. Just a little twist if you think your opponent's shot was too good or was just a lucky one.

Here it is:  Only each player within their own foursome can Mulligan's (1 tee and 1 anyplace per 9 holes) be used on their opponent making them [smiley=:o.gif] re-shoot [smiley=;).gif] his or her ball.

Otherwise it could get too confusing and delay the game too much.  I'm glad to see some response to my ideas.  I think the whole object of the exercise, RideHer Cup 2003, is to have fun and not to take this round of golf or ourselves too seriously but just to have a different kind of fun day out golfing.

31 days 23 hrs 27 mins 31 secs and wheels-up. . .But who's counting?

I think that works out to. . . 2,762,851 seconds left.  Talk about clock watching. . .Tic Toc?

Regards,
