Thai, Lao or Issan Food?

Recommended Posts

What is your favorite dish & which regional food do you prefer?

I love my seafood but I do have difficulty getting decent wild, fresh fish in the restaurants.

It all seems farmed & that includes the shell fish

The title should read Lao not Loa (corrected for you, Glyn.)

Thanks fella.

One of the reasons that I love Thailand is for the food so I had hoped to get some decent feedback on this question

I think all you could get is a list of dishes. Searching the menus of Thai restaurants might be as useful, unless we have a chef or two on here. I'm not even sure what you're after, apart from such a list. For Thai food, I like panang, tom kha, khao men kai - simple stuff. For Isan, laab and nam toke nuea. Overall, because it's different everywhere, I love gai yang. Mango and sticky rice is the world's best dessert - thats a statement, not an opinion. But there are at least, AT LEAST 100 dishes I like quite a lot after those. Lao food, not so much, thanks. In a Lao setting, I'll fill my stomach, not love the meal.

Most fish and other seafood sold worldwide in restaurants is farmed, yes. You have choices of course. You can search and find suppliers and restaurants that think like you about it. If you can't get non-farmed seafood in Pattaya, you're definitely not looking. But yes, it's a chore to do that.

I've been on a nam took moo binge for the last couple of months. I've got a motorbike guy who gets it from various places, which I sample and then approve or disapprove...there's an amazing variation in preparations, but, if the meat is cooked so it is soft, it's all good.

This is one of the best I've had....notice the liberal use of garlic :P

I've just reached the point where I have had enough, and I've instructed my livein cook to start varying my diet. For the first time in weeks, I skipped the nam took moo and had gaeng garee gai.

I miss nam took moo already!!

I think pricing as well as the hole-in-the-wall resturants and street carts has a lot to do with it too. Its so cheap and convinient , you can afford to try 10 different dishes a day and still be on budget. Cant to that in more expensive countries.

FYI , my fav 'must eat every trip' fod would be the Sea Bass ; steamed or deep fried. Under 300B for the whole fish intact. just add a steamed rice and its a whole meal.

A surprisingly outstanding meal can be had in a place you'd probably pass by without notice...

Try the husband & wife operation 100 meters from the crest of Pratamnak hill on the left coming from Jomtien to Pattaya has a rotisserie of Gai Yang outside the tented seating.
