anybody used or thought about getting a chopper to Pattaya....... I know I can never get there fast enough.  I have emailed these guys to ask, they advertise such a service to the Royal Cliff Resort.  Thanks

My condo is overlooked by one of the helipads which is on the roof of the Royal Cliff Grand hotel. The other is on top of PEACH (Pattaya Exhibition and Convention Hall) also in the Royal Cliff grounds, I have never seen this one used.

In June 2002 a party of wealthy Irishmen stayed at the Royal Cliff and commuted to Korea or Japan to watch Ireland in the World cup. They had helicopter transfers to and from the airport, except at night when they are not permitted. They told me that the chopper seats 7 and if you fill it transfers cost about 50 GBP per head each way.

Forgive the digression, but whilst on the subject of quicker transfers upon one's arrival in Bangkok to Pattaya, the good news is that the new international airport being built (Suvarnabhumi Airport) is closer to Pattaya than Don Muang.

The bad news is that the opening date is now scheduled for 29 September 2005, although I believe it was originally meant to be ready on 29 September 2003 (yesterday) >:P .

And there is still no Train service from the new airport to Bangkok untill at least 10 years after the airport is complete. Hows that for planning?

Very good planning.  If there was a train service the farangs would take that instead of a taxi, thereby decimating Bangkok's economy!

Maybe not if you look at how long the current train takes to get from Bangkok to Pattaya.

Many Thai trains are old Japanese rolling stock pensioned off thirty years ago.

I thought it was going to be an extension of the BTS sky train which would make the trip very quick.

Will Don Muang be closing when the new airport opens?

I have only been to DM twice, 1 in, 1 out but I thought the airport seemed OK.

What I've read, is that it will stay open, maybe for freight and domestic flights only.  New airport will be about 55 K's closer to Pattaya and we won't have to travel through Bangkok (making the drive about an hour shorter). The reason they are building a new airport is that they want to make it a hub for other airlines and they needed more gates.  If this becomes a reality, look for more direct flights to Bangkok.

Well the helicopter mob never responded, my guess was it would be way to expensive for one or two people....... but was interested all the same.  Can't wait for the new airport even though I also go to Bangkok for business.

To add some more trivia in here whilst we're on the subject of transportation to Thailand, there is a new international thai airline to start up services soon called 'Thai Pacific Airways'. It was meant to start operating this month but I understand it has now been delayed to December with services between Bangkok and Sydney  :P .

An article on this new airline can be found here :

Some people will appreciate this...  "TPA's strong point was its attractive airfares with luxury services including foot massages from professional masseurs. The massage service will be provided in the upper deck of the aircraft where the first-class compartment is located"

Gordon,

think I would be more excited if not for the "two 25-year-old B747-200s from Kuwait Airways" the rest sounds good, just need to start saving for first class.

Older planes fall out of the sky more often than new ones. Older planes also end up with the shittest airlines with the least cash to maintain or repair them. Wonder if there is some connection ?

Flash,

Okay, I understand your reservations, but what about this part "The Bangkok-Sydney route will focus on Thai students who study in Australia" meaning you could be flying with young women of the first category in need of help with their English ? ;D

Gordon,

looks like both you and torrenova are worried about going down on the flight!!  Think I'll wait until they put the 747-400's on the Sydney route, but how many uni students will there be in first class with me........ 8)

Well Flash, I do admit to a little fear of flying, but my airline of choice from Sydney is Singapore Airlines with the morning departure and same day late afternoon arrival in Bangkok.

My only real concern these days is when am I going to be able to make it back to Thaliand !  >:(

Gordon,

I'm with you on Singapore, I fly them often, also I usually opt for free ticket in business clss, 85,000 miles needed.  Last year I decided to go first class Sydney BKK,  I was the only one up there on a couple of legs, was great!!    I have enough miles for one more b/c class trip then I'm back on Qantas where I have lots of miles.  Cheers
