Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Recommended Posts

I enjoy drinking Glenfiddich which is a single malt scotch whisky.

Is it available in Pattaya and do you know the price for a bottle please?

Can you also tell me other single malts that are available?

cheers

You can buy all sorts of imported spirits at Friendship, Pattaya Tai. I am sure they have Glenfiddich, along with a decent selection of other Scotch whisky.

Figure about double the price you'd pay at home.

not for what we pay in Australia and a lot cheaper than Singapore duty free. Of the top of my head Johnny Walker green label was being promote at Singapore airport one time and when we got to Pattaya, Big C had it for half the price.

Its £10 a bottle in Asda at the moment. I know thats of no use but if you know someone setting off from the UK in the next week or 2 you couls ask them to bring a bottle. I wonder how much DHL would charge for a couple of bottles to Thailand, I believe they charge by weight rather than size of parcel

I'm a Macallan drinker. I get the 12 year old in the basement of CentralFestival mall for 2500, they also have the 18 year old for 5200. They also have the 12 year old at Topps on Second Road and Pattaya Klang. Also, check out the Whisky Bar on Soi 6.

How do those prices compare to your own country?

It'd be more convincing if you were to give actual prices.

RhinoTusk paid 2500 here, but using price search on google, the Macallan 12 year old costs between 1200 and 1500 baht in most stores internationally.

I still assert that one should be prepared to pay about twice as much locally for imported spirits.

The Macallan 18 year old costs about 2400 baht in most stores, but he pays 5200.

Moral of the story...if you can, buy at duty free or your home country. Much cheaper than buying in Thailand.

I don't think that's the case at all - or, at least, not for the UK v Thailand. Two of the most popular imported spirits JWB and Chivas can both be had for around GBP20.00 (THB960) in UK for 70cl bottles. The same brands/sizes here in Thailand are generally just under THB 1,000. For overall availability in Thailand (BigC, Tesco, 7-11), I reckon it's slightly cheaper for spirits in LOS.

CT, I'll modify my statement to apply to those imported spirits that are not imported en masse and are usually found in specialized stores.

You can buy the usual JW, Chivas, etc at 7-11!

This is where we would buy Whiskey if we were to buy it in Australia but we don't because it is to expensive. There 2 full bottles of Glenfiddich 12 year old sitting on our shelf any body who walks in is free to drink it, I think they have been there about 3 years. Every body wants to try the cheap bands we bring back from Asia.

( The Glenfiddich were bought by people we did foreigners for, would of rather had the cash)

When in Thailand live a little try all different brands from 100 baht to 200 baht a bottle if you don't like them give them to the cleaners or the night staff they are very thank full.

Yes Martin I understand he asked about single malt but if you drink whiskey your not going to only drink single malt. Well not the people we have met anyway.

aussiechic, are you telling us that, in general, buying well-known, high end, branded spirits here in Thailand is cheaper than duty free or back home (wherever that is)?

I sort of get that impression from your posts, and for most countries and most high end spirits, that is not the case.

Hi,

Myself i prefer Glenmorangie, a single malt and found in Tesco's and many off lic. It works out about 1600B a bottle, and no silly thing in the neck of the bottle, Imported over here in the bottle. Just over 30GBP's. Costs me back home about 22GBP's a bottle. I tried the 18 year stuff and I don't think it is as nice as the 12 year old, just my choice. Got my bottle in for New Years eve, Just a tip, don't offer a Thai a drinck of it, they will only put coke in it, Yuck..

Which 12 year-old Glenmorangie are you getting in Tesco's UK (or any other supermarket) for 22 quid? :clueless

I thought they just waved the bottle over a glass of ice cubes and then filled it with water and soda?

Hi,

C.T. Last year, Nov., got a bottle of Glen. single malt, 70cl, for 22GBP's in Tesco's, in the Isle of Man, my home country. I did not say the U.K. as the Island is not in the U.K.,. They had the 18 year one for about 5 GBP's. more, Which i do not like They also had one done in a sherry cask for about, 27 GBP's. I have also bought it in the U.K. be it a few years ago for the same price.. A very good malt in my thinking. I do not like the Islands malt, some taste a bit peaty to me IMO.

I didn't say "the UK", I said "Tesco's UK" (who own and operate the store in Douglas - as opposed to Tesco Lotus who own and operate stores in Thailand). Having clarified that point, the question was "Which 12 year-old Glenmorangie ...?"

Four weeks ago when I flew to Bangkok from LHR I had a browse around the Heathrow duty free and they have a large amount of Single malts. One that took my eye was a Bhunnahabin (sp?) from Islay, it was in a wooden presentation case and was just over £130.

On my return i checked out The Whisky Exchange and it was around £170. http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/

It may be possible to make a few quid by buying an expensive single malt at the duty free and reselling it elsewhere, but you really have to know what you are doing because of the huge number of variations of even one brand.

In Hua Hin, O'Neills has quite a good selection of single malts for sale.

Gus,

Try Distil at Lebua State Tower - not only do they have the whiskies, they have a choice of Scottish water. :thumbup

Hi C.T.,

There is more than one store run by Tesco's I.O.M. Ltd. in this small Island, There is one in Ramsey, Peel, Castletown and Port Erin, as well as Douglas. and the Glenmorrange 12 year old, which they sell at about 22GBP's, is the standard one they make, in a 70cl. bottle., not the 18 year old, or one that is kept in a Sherry keg, or Port keg to mature. Also Tesco's Lotus, and Big C, which i was in this morning, in Udon, Thailand, were selling the same type bottle, 70cl's, of Glenmoorange at 1650B, over 30GBP, at todays exchange rate, as i quoted. Tesco's in the Island is registered as, Tesco's I.O.M. Ltd. NOT TESCO's U.K. Ltd.. The island is not part of the U.K.. Most likly they have reg., in the I.O.M., because of the cheaper tax's they pay there, at a guess.

Cheers Doug.
