There is more than one store run by Tesco's I.O.M. Ltd. in this small Island, There is one in Ramsey, Peel, Castletown and Port Erin, as well as Douglas. and the Glenmorrange 12 year old, which they sell at about 22GBP's, is the standard one they make, in a 70cl. bottle., not the 18 year old, or one that is kept in a Sherry keg, or Port keg to mature. Also Tesco's Lotus, and Big C, which i was in this morning, in Udon, Thailand, were selling the same type bottle, 70cl's, of Glenmoorange at 1650B, over 30GBP, at todays exchange rate, as i quoted. Tesco's in the Island is registered as, Tesco's I.O.M. Ltd. NOT TESCO's U.K. Ltd.. The island is not part of the U.K.. Most likly they have reg., in the I.O.M., because of the cheaper tax's they pay there, at a guess.

Firstly, just for clarification, the Glenmorangie currently sold in Tesco Lotus in Thailand is "The original" - i.e. 10 year-old, hence my question as there are several versions of 12 year-old Glemmorangie (none of which are known as "the standard"). The 10 Year-old can be bought for 20 quid in Tesco UK, or 1650 Baht in Tesco Lotus. I believe Glenlivet is the other single malt in Tesco Lotus, currently retailing at 1999 Baht but is also available for 20 quid in Tesco UK.

 

Secondly, to address your IOM nonsense. Tesco stores in the IOM are owned and operated by Tesco Stores Limited, registered in England - there are no such companies as Tesco's I.O.M. Ltd. or Tesco's U.K. Ltd. Tesco Stores Limited operations in IOM are registered as a foreign company - hence the F at the end of the registration number.

Not in line with the OPs question, but 100 pipers Scotch Whiskey was the cheapest whiskey I saw at Big C last year..less that half of cost in OZ, aussiechic take note if you like a tipple.

just got my Christmas whisky an Ardbeg Alligator a bit strong at 51.2% will need a dash of water.

And a Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2004 50% very light coloured an afternoon nip.

Off to see if I can get there sherry edition the taste is not everything but the nose is the best drink ever.

aussiechic, are you telling us that, in general, buying well-known, high end, branded spirits here in Thailand is cheaper than duty free or back home (wherever that is)?

 

I sort of get that impression from your posts, and for most countries and most high end spirits, that is not the case.

 

 

 

Assuming the price of 1460 baht is for the 750 ml bottle of 12 year old Glenfiddich which converts to $47.98 Cdn then the price is slightly cheaper than the normal price of $46.75 Cdn in the province of Ontario in Canada ..

I bought a bottle of Glenlivet and also a bottle of Highland Park because all my cool and hip friends drink single malt but honestly wasn't that impressed. Still like the oh' so popular Glenfiddish the best but normally just drink blended scotch. Guess I am far from being a hardcore connoisseur on the field...

One scotch that impressed me a lot for it's great 'nose' and taste was a blended..... mind you a JW Green... never thought much of the Black

I bought green once and loved it though quite pricey for everyday use on my budget. Not a great fan of black either however Double Black I like. Good taste and value for your bucks.

JW is available all over the world but the OP is asking about single malt whisky,

 

How could single malt be consistant in taste from one distilling to another. I just don't see how the single malt can remain the same from one bottle to the next unless you got lucky and had two bottles from the same barrel. Buy 100 Pipers when in Thailand, who are you trying to impress anyway.

I think that a single malt is a drink to be savoured at home, or in a fine restaurant, where there really isn't anyone to impress. Personally I seem to enjoy the smell of it more than the actual drinking. It isn't ever something I would order in a Pattaya bar, they even cheat you on the crap stuff. Except once in a little restaurant in a place up the hills of Mae Hong Son, when faced with an impressive array of single malts, and being told it was 60 baht for quite a generous pouring, I impressed myself into a stupor.

I adore the peaty flavour of Laphroaig (10 y.o.), but often have to settle on Glenlivet. Ah well, they are both okay, and I enjoy them. However, if you are having it with anything other than ice, then buy the cheapest crap you can find.

If they were selling it for 60 baht a "generous" shot, and there are about 25 1 oz shots in a 750ml bottle, then at 60*25, they'd take in 1500 baht/bottle. Is there anyplace where you can get a good single malt for 1500 baht a bottle or less, unless it fell off a truck?

If the ice melted, wouldn't the water from the ice interfear with the taste of the scotch? Best to use ice cubes (if cubes are best) made from distilled water.

 

This is the last comment I will be making in this thread BECAUSE I drink and enjoy "100 Pipers". It isn't Chivas Regal but came out of the same stills with the same ingrediants.

I may have been guilty of taking advantage. The lady running the place didn't seem to know what to charge and settled on the 60 baht. When her husband returned from his work overseas, the near empty bottles may have rattled on the shelves to celtic curses.

I had a good friend bring me as as a gift from Australia a bottle of 12 year old Aberfeldy Single Highland Malt

 

Colour: Warm gold

Nose: Almost incense-like, heather honey with a fruity softness, notes of pineapple, toast and cereal

Palate: Syrupy, lingering on the tongue like a liqueur.

Body: Full bodied

Finish: Full flavour, the perfume characteristics become more spicy, with a bitter hint of Seville oranges in a decidedly dry finish
