Where to keep Title book for car (Lem Tabian)

Just paid off my car and got sent my blue title book.

 

Should I keep it with the car or separate from the car?

 

I ask, because, in the USA, we have a similar document, called a "pink slip" (title paper), and it's advisable not to keep it with the vehicle.

 

What are the risks of keeping the title document with the car? Could somebody then sell the car if it is stolen?

Keep a copy, if the car were to get broken in the person could change the name of the owner.

That is what I would do. The police will say that you are required to have it with you. Most will settle for a copy, those that won't just want some money anyway. Cough up a couple of hundred baht, and be on your way.

My books stay in my safe at home. On a trip to Jomtien, it cost me 300 baht at a huge checkpoint because I didn't have a copy. That's the first time they ever asked for a copy of the book. I now carry a copy in the glove box. I should add that they treated the Thais the same as this farang. There was a long line of people lined up to pay the fine. It is bullshit and just another gimmick to extort money from everyone. They were making a huge haul that day.

I'm surprised they could demand the title papers, since for the last three years, it's been with the bank where I had the loan. Anyone paying off a car loan would not have the book.

I asked that very question and the police told me that the finance company will give you a copy if you ask.

Thanks I've had my blue book 4 yrs last Oct.....No one has ever asked for it...I'll make a copy and stick it in the glove box.

I keep a copy in the car with copies of the insurance and of course the original 'disc' on the windscreen.

It has always sufficed.

Originals in safe.
