It probably referred to the knock-out stages. The 1968 Spain game was home and away, not tournament play. The tournament stages were actually held in Italy, where England lost to Yugoslavia.

You have a point, but you did say "tournament games" which includes games that don't have a "knock-out" status. Either way, it's a shit record no?

Hi,   None of Bayern's players were on duty.

Agreed. I thought they were two fairly decent games. The Greeks looked well-organised once they settled down - is the Russian captain related to the plonker by the same name at Arsenal?

It's better than Scotland's. :ninja:

That's nothing to be proud of. You don't have to keep looking at my profile Tom, contrary to what you might think I'm not the one responsible for the negative votes. :ninja:

What negative votes? :clueless

Back to the footie though ... I think the Germans will be pretty chuffed how things turned out.

England lose and the curse of 'Cheshire Tom' continues a hat trick! Congratulations. Only that octopus has had more success. Though the octopus (Paul?) backed winners, Tom works the reverse. Backs 'em to win in the hope ( in England's case at least) that they lose.

Come on CT who's next for the chop?

Italy deserved to win. Even if their coach looked like a head-waiter shouting "I sayd taggiatelli for taable 3" Italy play the Italian way so much better than we can. I'd rather we went out honestly than trying to ape them, they do the negative in a positive way.

Thought Carroll played well when he got on. Wiltshire, Cleverly, Oxy, Walker, Jones. There's a few coming along.

Feel sorry for Gerrard and Terry they've probably come to the end of the road for England and they've not much to show. Terry was amazing and whatever happens in his weird private life he seems to put it all aside when he steps on the pitch. Not a fan of Cole who won't play for us again, but it would be a shame if the penalty miss is allowed to blot his copy book! It shouldn't but these regrets can overshadow careers.

The 4 best teams remain and all is right in the world.

Just hoping Tom goes for the Germans, it would be nice for Spain right now. Rioja over Gevertsetramner, the sound of maraca's over Leder-hausened arses being slapped, Paella over sauerkraut ..........and Franco over Hitler!

Different tournament - same shit. They have never beaten a major team in the knock-out stages of a tournament on foreign soil. England - the biggest pretenders in world football.

Hi,

Italy prove too strong for England. England played with spirit at least. Time to get the young boys in now despite the good performances of JT and Gerrard.

I'll go for the Italians - although they dominated England, I didn't get the feeling after the first 15 minutes that they were likely to score. One thing's for sure, they won't dominate the midfield against the Germans. I kind of hope the Portuguese beat the Spanish though ... :ninja:

We obviously view Carroll through different specs ... :glare:

Welbeck contributed a defensive header out of the danger area from a cross and allowed a ball to go for a Joe hart goal-kick. I may have missed something but Ican't recall much else from him. Carroll repeatedly won possession from the aimless GK clearances and was holding the ball up for the odd micro-second before Italian order was restored. I was reduced to seeing this as a triumph.......Through my, 'relative triumph specs'......(You have to be English)!!!

Not at all. I saw all that. It's just that I expect a bit more from a 35m quid striker. Maybe I expect too much. As it is, Peter Crouch can do all that, he has a better strike rate AND a decent looking missus! :tits:

Hi,

I thought the French went down without a fight. Portugal have a good chance of beating Spain as they are struggling without Villa's goals. Italy look poor in front of goal so it looks like the Germans are on the march.

Well I was talking about the Italy game and Carroll's contribution during it, when compared to Welbeck's. However if you want to add transfer fees and Crouch to the debate you won't get an argument from me......Not even to be bloody-minded.

Carroll, 35x better than Trevor Francis, the first 1 million pound Englishman??.... And 350x better than Jimmy Greaves? Ridiculous! Inflated prices for inflated egos out all proportion to any difference in skill levels.....It's the world we live in unfortunately........And kit-kats were better when they were 6d too!

Peter Crouch...'Goal of the season' ......'Francis and Greaves' would have been proud to score such a goal..... For that matter, so would anyone who has ever played the game. Crouch's goals for England ratio is one of the best. I like that Crouch's '7ft 9in' head's in the air but his feet are still firmly on the ground. When asked, 'what he'd be now if he wasn't playing football?' He answered, "Still a virgin."

Self-effacing humour from a Premiership professional ......rare as rocking horse pucky!

Having said that when I first saw Carroll playing for Newcastle I hoped he was eligible for England.

Hi,

Italy have a great record in semi-finals and against Germany. They will give Germany a tough game this evening. Spain struggle but beat Portugal on penalties. The best teams have been in the mix and if Spain win it will be a great achievement.

Well Italy turned it on last night, something they failed to do against England.

Not sure if it was a team playing with confidence, or Germany made a major defensive strategic error.... the through balls down the middle were punching holes in them.

Italy - Spain on Sunday...well here in the UK.

Italy turned it on this morning all right. It hurts me to see Germany consistently getting beaten by them when it comes to the sharp end. Nevertheless, it was good entertainment to watch the game. Joachim Löw has gone from super coach to villain. His rotation system badly backfired. All he could do was to stand there chewing his fingernails.

I cannot see Spain win this competition. They have not got a Super Mario Balotelli and a great goalie like Buffon. Besides, Italy seem to have the most fire and passion in their belly. Congratulations Italy. See you again in Brazil.

Hi,

Italy have as good a record against Spain as they do against Germany. Ballotelli showed his class last night. An Italian journo said he is the saner of the 2 strikers. Still Cassano had a good game as well.

forza italia !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :thumbup

This has nothing to do with Euro 2012, but I bet you like to remember the penalty shoot out against France in 2006. That was after your team had eliminated Germany.

4 nil,

WOW

It was a great game, for Spain. I am glad Germany lost against Italy, otherwise they would have received a similar hiding. Super Mario misfired big time and can now return to Manchester City. I had picked Italy to win. Be advised never to follow my tips.
