Advice re Using Part Quotes

How do I attach just part of a quote please, in a reply?. Say a sentence from a previous posting. I am familiar with quoting the whole of a posting of course.

 

I am an elderly newbie. Please keep the advice detailed but simple and non technie, i.e. click this then that etc.

 

If this has been covered previously, I apologise.

Hit the Quote (single post) or MultiQuote (several posts) button for the post(s) from which you want to quote:

 

 

That will bring up the entire post in a quote field. Use your mouse to highlight the parts you want to exclude, then hit delete to get rid of them. Be sure NOT to delete the "end quote" code [/qu*te].

 

 

That will have leave you with:

 

 

You can then write your reply in the field beneath the quote box.

Step 1. Left click the post button.

 

 

 

Step 2. The post to be quoted opens in the standard "edit window".

 

 

 

Step 3. Left click and drag to highlight text you want to delete. Right-click "Cut" or press the delete key on your keyboard. Repeat as required.

 

 

 

Step 4. Highlight any blank rows as above you wish to delete. Right-click "Cut" or press the delete key on your keyboard. Repeat as required.

 

 

 

Step 5. Left-click the post button and Babs is your uncle.

Once again thanks for your assistance.

 

It seems that quoting a single sentence from a long post could be quite tedious and time consuming,

 

I was hoping for a quick method via the use of brackets/inverted commas etc.

 

I suppose practise makes perfect however.

It's a small world!

 

My grandaughter, during university half terms, used to help out at the Oxfam Gift Shop on Water Lane in Wilmslow.

 

She also did stints at the Oxfam Book Shop in Alderley Edge.

 

Both shops are still there and seem always busy.

This might be simpler for you. windows has a copy (or cut) and paste feature. You can use it anywhere, on other boards in word documents etc.

Its simple to use:-

- Use your mouse to highlight the text you want to copy. It shows u in blue

- Hit the Control plus the C keys together (Copy)

- Go to where you want the text to appear.

- Hit the Control plus V keys together. (Paste) your text will appear.

 

You can highlight the text in a post anytime you want, continue to read other posts, then post your reply using the above method to copy your highlighted text. Note that when you hit Control C again the previous highlighted text is superseded by your new highlights. Its very quick.

I believe if you use biggles' method, that you will lose the name and time of posting of the quoted section. CheshireTom and Evil gave you the best approach, and selecting/deleting the text you don't want is anything but time-consuming and cumbersome. Using a mouse, dragged along the text you want to delete,and then hitting the delete key is a matter of a second or two.

I was just about to mention the loss of the author/date stamp information etc to Biggles, when using his method.

Hi again.

 

I was using the touchpad previously on my laptop whilst trying the part quotes advice.

 

I have now gone over to a bluetooth mouse and the procedure is much more manageable.

I'd agree that using a touchpad challenges your manual dexterity too much to make it easy to do. The use of a mouse definitely helps.

The deletion part a bit more tricky when using a smallscreen device (ipod or smartphone). Can be done if you can zoom in to the point where you can accurately place the cursor and start deleting character by character. 'Haven't found a way to designate & delete whole blocks of text though. I usually just give up & leave it all in (or rethink replying at all... ).
