My first day ever in Thailand (1988) went to Grand Palace why I do not know, vowed never to return.

Was hot hung over being led around buy last night barfine,

got ripped off buy Thai man tour guide told him and her to fuck off by the end of the tour...

what an awful day it was....

'Sounds like you had a bad experience, but don't let it sour you on these sites. I think they're so worthwhile. Get a good guidebook or two (stop by AsiaBooks maybe) and be your own tourguide. You might even be able to find a wingman hereabouts who's either never seen these things either, or would like to see them again. ('Doesn't the Grand Palace have their own on-staff tourguides though? 'Seem to remember doing that and had no complaints.) I would never ever grab one of the touts just outside offering themselves up as tourguides - they're likely to know a little something but actually have another agenda for you.

Yep, they are official tour guides inside the walls. Also, don't listen to the unofficial touts outside the gates, they are all talking bollocks. I got the usual need to buy trousers, and no guides available inside.

Well - I think shorts actually are forbidden, as are sleeveless shirts and flip flops. I remember I was aware of this from the guidebooks I had with me and maybe some other sources & so had no problem. I ALSO remember being accosted by the touts outside - one even tried the "palace closed today" scam on me. I'd heard about all that crap though & just ignored them & kept going.

Flip flops aren't forbidden. The only things that ask for are all your legs are covered, either with trousers or skirts, and that arms must be reasonably covered( i.e no singlets, sling back tops and the like). The palace will charge you a 200 baht deposit for trousers/skirts/shirts, of which you will get all the deposit back as long as you have the yellow paper slip they give to you.

Unless things have changed recently, neither were sandals without a heel/ankle strap. However, you needed to buy a pair of cute little socks for 15/20 Baht to wear with them. Not a problem for the Brits, but other nationalities may feel uncomfortable with the sandals and socks look.

Thanks for the post and the pictures. I have only been to the Grand Palace once, many years ago. I think i would like to go again but this time get a guide so I can understand what it is I am looking at. Good post. Great pictures. Thanks.
